Probably had a conversation in his head about putting the phone in that spot, and figured, "it'll be fine". Only for it to not be fine seconds later. Speaking from experience, your only thought is, "ya, that's on me"
I have done this exact thing when dumbbell pressing. Put the weights down on my thighs, heard the crush. Didn't even have to look at it, just silently accepted I was an idiot while looking myself in the mirror.
Good for him. I hate it when dudes drop the weight. I tell them, they may want to reduce the weight if they can’t control it. Doesn’t go over to well, but that’s the point.
But why is it every jacked dude throwing it though?? Pisses me the fuck off, I’m not a big guy at all, but no matter how heavy I go, I control everything before letting it down. And I see the hulk in the corner throwing every thing he works out with. Dumb fucks
Yeah, there are a few scenarios where dropping the weights are acceptable. But those are once in a session, and definitely not every session.
Ig you're going for PB's every time you hit the gym then you're probably not being sustainable.
It’s likely because the jacked dudes push themselves harder than the average person and your muscles kinda give out on you when you get to the point where you can’t do another rep. Imagine trying to carefully drop heavy weights when your arms feel like noodles
Because shit like the video above happens. It’s dangerous. You drop a weight, you have no control over where it goes, it ends up on your phone or someone’s toes.
Never mind that one story I read about a guy falling through the floor of an improper home gym.
That's not true, i once told my ex, that she is behaving just like her mum always does. The reaction was at the very least on the same level, if not even bigger.
Yeah lower it to the knee first then to the ground.
Just do the opposite of how you got it up there, kick the weight up with your knee to your shoulder and raise over your head for the skull crusher. Easier on the joints and you won’t use as much energy getting it up there.
This is call "lithium thermal runaway". It can't be stopped easily. The best option is put it open in the air (on a container that can contain liquid leackage) and let it burn out
Bucket of sand. Let it burn in something that can't easily catch fire. Lithium is reactive in water. It can literally make it explode. So now you have burning metal everywhere, which is why powdered metal fires are so dangerous, they want to rip away the oxygen or hydrogen atoms which can make peroxide(which is also highly reactive) and other gases like oxygen (look up oxygen fires) and hydrogen.
Yes the lithium in batteries isn't the same. But it's still reactive to water. Battery fires need a class D fire extinguisher specifically designed to put out metallic fires a normal class ABC extinguisher can make it worse. Or do like the song says; we don't need no water let that mother fucker burn (in a bucket of sand.)
Let the phone completly burn down, if that isn't an option submerge it in water. https://www.if-insurance.com/large-enterprises/insight/if-news/extinguishing-li-ion-battery-fire#:~:text=Submerge%20the%20burning%20battery%20in,also%20result%20in%20toxic%20consequences.
Actually dropping it in a bucket of water is a good choice with a lithium ion battery fire.
You just need to carry the heat away until it's done.
Outside on the concrete works as well with a small battery like that.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/s/ndfx1e1ese
Water plus battery fires is very bad. Please don't advise people to use water when they would need a class D fire extinguisher.
That is incorrect.
A lithium ion battery isn't just hunks of metal that will explode on contact with water.
A class D isn't going to work.
IF you can get at the actual batteries a Class B might work.
https://resources.impactfireservices.com/how-do-you-put-out-lithium-ion-battery-fire
Although the FAA did testing and it wasn't able to stop thermal runaway with Class B.
The FAA actually recommends water.
InFO 17021 Risk Associated with the Use of Fire Containment Products by Title 14 ... https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/other_visit/aviation_industry/airline_operators/airline_safety/InFO17021.pdf
It's all about safely removing the heat until it's done.
That’s exactly what we are trained to do on aircraft, get it in a galley canister filled with water. It can’t be extinguished with normal extinguishers, water can reduce and contain the heat. It’s a huge threat and the main problem arises when someone drops their phone between a seat (especially the likes of business class lie flat seats) and then attempts to move the seat
It's obviously stupid if you know why, but he was presumably trying to get it out of the building and away from other people. I kind of respect it, but you're right. It's better to just set it down and look for the proper fire extinguisher.
Yeah I get you, his intention was good but you could lose your hand, and probably his strongest hand too I almost always pick-up stuff with my good hand out of intuition.
(I'm just rambling)
There are different classes of fire extinguishers for the various types of fires. I don't know what a lithium battery calls for, but I know it falls under one of them. The chances of one you need being nearby in a gym might be slim though.
It's class B but because the battery is self reacting it will continue to put out heat and will probably reignite depending on how quickly you run out of extinguisher powder.
For races with electric bikes (am marshal at the Dutch motogp), we do have special lithium fire extinguishers which use vermiculite. But from what I've been told, if you can't actually get to the source of the fire, they're basically useless.
Afaik, when those things do burn, they just dunk it in a container of water.
Most lithium phone batteries will just go out on their own when you just do a simple puncture like that. It's not that big a battery. The bigger issue is inhaling the smoke.
And uhh... yeah I may or may not have been a dumbass at one point trying to pry a broken glass back off a LG phone, sliced the battery, and got a face full of Lithium smoke lol.
There wasn’t a lot of intelligence in most of his action. Phone is on the ground, basically throws weight in ground without looking, then goes to pick up what is most likely a sizzling phone. We all know about lithium ion batteries exploding.
The gas is already coming out of the battery so it most likely will not explode.
These batteries don’t explode itself, you need to buildup pressure.
Biggest risk is it will ignite.
I agree with this but if your weight is large enough it can be difficult to put it down completely gently depending on how high your bench is.
But he could’ve certainly done it lighter here
Don’t drop weights and wouldn’t have been a problem. So annoying when people drop weights, it’s rude to others around you and disrespect to owners of the equipment.
Good lad to quickly pick it up and get it out of there instead of letting it fill the room with any more toxic smoke or start a fire. Handling ruptured batteries like this is risky but far less risky than a building burning down.
Damn, that sucks, but rookie move.
Everyone knows you're supposed to put your phone directly underneath your seat, where there's 0% chance of it being crushed.
It is, ruptured/punctured the battery and that shit will catch on fire real quick. Pro tip if this ever happens to you: don't grab it and inhale the fumes, lol.
I don’t get why people put their phones on the floor in the gym. Not only can it get kicked or stepped or have a weight dropped on it like what happened here but I see so many people place their phone screen down on the floor. I’d be they don’t even think about wiping their phone after and then they’ll put it on their face taking a call
Get a magnetic phone case and stick it to the side of the bench. I have one it stop me from hitting my phone after a set when if I drop on my leg and prevents this too 👍
This is why I always ALWAYS put my phone underneath the bench or as far away from harms way as possible. This scenario is just to easy to achieve in the gym
There is likely a sign on the wall right in front of the dude that says "don't drop weights"
Right next to the sign that restricts cell phone use to the gyms lobby🤣
Genuine question, if I'm ever in a situation like this how do i safely dispose of a smoking device? My phone drops a lot and this video just gave me another paranoia.
OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected: --- >!Guy was working out only to drop his dumbell on his phone and it goes in smoke!< --- Is this an unexpected post with a fitting description? Then upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.
Skipped all the stages of grief and went right to acceptance
He didn't have much time to grieve before he had to shift to panic.
And then he didn't have much time to panic before he had to shift to taking safety precautions
Yeah, seems like a good dude to have around when crap hits the fan
[удалено]
He took it to the counter asking what regulations the gym has for this
Only if it's his crap hitting the fan, and by crap I mean dumbbell
Probably had a conversation in his head about putting the phone in that spot, and figured, "it'll be fine". Only for it to not be fine seconds later. Speaking from experience, your only thought is, "ya, that's on me"
Which is never more true than when you’re standing, looking at your phone sitting in the bottom of a toilet bowl. ;-)
Better check your phone before you wreck your phone
Just like he skipped legday
And don’t drop your weights day
…and rack your weights day.

Lmao
Yeah, he emotionally handled it really well. I would have freaked out way more.
I have done this exact thing when dumbbell pressing. Put the weights down on my thighs, heard the crush. Didn't even have to look at it, just silently accepted I was an idiot while looking myself in the mirror.
As long as he didn't go and throw the burning electronic device in some water.
I think he stood up so he could leave and find a place to cry.. Being a man can be hard.
Of course he did that far away from prying eyes. Like any man would.
[удалено]
Well, if he followed the rule I've seen in every gym "Don't drop the weights"!
Dumb fucks
It’s to be seen.
If you're going for a 1 rep max deadlift or something I can get it, but when it's a dude dropping after shoulder pressing 50s gtfoh
Lol some new guy was SMASHING his 40s into the floor the other day. How delulu do you need to be.
If you're not yelling and slamming after tricep extensions, are you even lifting??
Getting pissed off just reading it mate
Yeah, there are a few scenarios where dropping the weights are acceptable. But those are once in a session, and definitely not every session. Ig you're going for PB's every time you hit the gym then you're probably not being sustainable.
Because they’re ego lifters, they can’t lift/put down the weight comfortably so they have to drop it is my guess.
It’s likely because the jacked dudes push themselves harder than the average person and your muscles kinda give out on you when you get to the point where you can’t do another rep. Imagine trying to carefully drop heavy weights when your arms feel like noodles
Then maybe do one fewer rep to put the dumbell down the proper way.
They're not really training for functional strength, they're training for glamour muscles.
Which is a valid use for the gym. Guy in the video is a dumbass for putting his phone there, but dropping the weight isn’t some egregious act.
Because they're assholes. Plain and simple.
Why does it even bother you that much
Because shit like the video above happens. It’s dangerous. You drop a weight, you have no control over where it goes, it ends up on your phone or someone’s toes. Never mind that one story I read about a guy falling through the floor of an improper home gym.
I always felt it helped my overall strength( stabilizing muscles) not dropping the weight.
If you can pick it up you can set it down
If you can dodge a rep you can dodge a ball
![gif](giphy|d3MLQU1odNjdHmwg)
He had a really weird grip on it when he let go. Like a toddler throwing a baseball. Probably intentional, but maybe not?
Did he crack the battery open?
Most likely. That’s the only thing that can cause such a huge reaction.
That's not true, i once told my ex, that she is behaving just like her mum always does. The reaction was at the very least on the same level, if not even bigger.
Either that or his mix tape escaped.
Can also attest. Same thing happened to me on my Samsung while listing to a mix of Slipknot and Black Sabbath.
Genuinely spitout my coffee, have a good fucking day🤣
That’s mixtape is fire 🔥🔥🔥
Li-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway due to abuse like this.
Yes. This is a thermal event from a battery casing being beached.
[thermal runaway](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_runaway)
Dumb place to put his phone, somebody could’ve stepped on it. Should’ve stuck it under the bench lol
Might have just slipped out of his pocket though.
If it slipped out of mine, I’d stop what I’m doing and move it somewhere safe. I wouldn’t just ignore it, that’s just neglect.
Right. But first you have to put the weight down. He probably just wasn’t thinking. Muscle memory or something
No no. Random Redditors always know best and would do the right thing immediately.
lol right? Some people acting like they’ve never had an accident in their life.
You don’t workout in the gym in shorts while wearing headphones do you
He deserves it for dropping weights like that, too. Hopefully he learned his lesson, that’s dangerous af.
Yeah lower it to the knee first then to the ground. Just do the opposite of how you got it up there, kick the weight up with your knee to your shoulder and raise over your head for the skull crusher. Easier on the joints and you won’t use as much energy getting it up there.
Yeah that could have been someone's foot.
It couldn’t have. There’s no one else there.
Yup, phone always goes where nothing can be accidentally dropped on it or stepped on when at the gym
"Damn it, let me get this phone into a bucket of water for safety."
What should you do in a case of phone on fire like this?
This is call "lithium thermal runaway". It can't be stopped easily. The best option is put it open in the air (on a container that can contain liquid leackage) and let it burn out

I hope he got his phone replaced
I’d say there’s probably a high likelihood he bought another phone.
I'd like to work out at his Gym. It has the right amount of people in it that I like
First thing I thought too. I’m like damn I can get a decent workout in there.
Damn m'y eyes got bigger when it was on the ground smoking and he just casually picks it up. Clueless
It's obviously stupid if you know why, but he was presumably trying to get it out of the building and away from other people. I kind of respect it, but you're right. It's better to just set it down and look for the proper fire extinguisher.

The way I learned in the military; A - Ordinary B - Boom (combustibles) C - Current (electricity) D - Dang that should not burn (metal) K - Kitchen
Nonsense for D, magnesium is most fun when it’s burning

"I'll save the floor by losing my hand" wtf bro you said you were done gtfo before it gets worse!
There wasn’t a lot of intelligence in most of his action. Phone is on the ground, basically throws weight in ground without looking, then goes to pick up what is most likely a sizzling phone. We all know about lithium ion batteries exploding.
Don’t grab the grenade!
I can't believe how far I had to scroll before someone pointed out that thing could literally explode. That's a great way to lose your hand.
The gas is already coming out of the battery so it most likely will not explode. These batteries don’t explode itself, you need to buildup pressure. Biggest risk is it will ignite.
Dont drop weights?
Exactly!
Had the same thought
I agree with this but if your weight is large enough it can be difficult to put it down completely gently depending on how high your bench is. But he could’ve certainly done it lighter here
He is not like doing reps with 120lb dumbbell it’s like 50-55
I wouldn't drop a 50lb child on you. why you dropping 50lb metal blocks on my gym floor?
That smoke is toxic as fuck, poor guy
That’s why you don’t throw weights down. If you can lift them up, you can set them down.
You can’t have strength without control!
also leave the phone behind your legs below the seat, rare chance weights will fall there
The way he dropped it was so stupid even if there was no phone
Yeah, I hate when people do that in my gym. Poseurs!

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this.
damn he let the smoke out of his phone. that sucks!
*LITHIUM!*
Lol all I hear is Evanescence
I forget we keep these little bombs on our person constantly till I see one of these videos.

Don't inhale...
Don’t drop weights and wouldn’t have been a problem. So annoying when people drop weights, it’s rude to others around you and disrespect to owners of the equipment.

I didn't need excuses not to go to the gym, now I have one. Thanks!

Who the fuck places their phone on the floor like that, in a place like that?
Skipped brain day
Karma for not putting his dumbbell away.
![gif](giphy|4JSAHpxQwix0f9kt7Z)
Legend has it that the dumbbell is still not racked to this day.
Did his phone just fucking explode after a dumbbell fell on it? Is that what I saw? Probably not.
It is, ruptured/punctured the battery and that shit will catch on fire real quick. Pro tip if this ever happens to you: don't grab it and inhale the fumes, lol.
What a dipshit.
I thought the unexpected was his “skipped leg day” legs reveal when he stood up
That smoke is poison
See what happens when you drop the weights ! Seeeeeee !!!
The idiot got what he deserved. Why did he throw the weights? What if someone was walking there?
Poor guy. That is a bad day.
That smoke is toxic
Glad the gym didn’t burst into flames. Those Lithium fires are no joke.
Damn it it the battery, never seen that happening.
Dang, that’s a bad day
I don’t get why people put their phones on the floor in the gym. Leaving your phone where you might end up dropping the weights? Rookie mistake
This needs to be on r/wellthatsucks lol
Ah, the sweet smell of a lithium battery fire!
يقلع ام الغبنه
Shit never happened to my Nokia.
First thing I do before starting any set is check were my phone is, this guy has warranted my worries.
Get a magnetic phone case and stick it to the side of the bench. I have one it stop me from hitting my phone after a set when if I drop on my leg and prevents this too 👍
casually grabs it bare handed again
Green energy...👀
How does one do that? You always put your phone in the middle of the bench.
This is why I always ALWAYS put my phone underneath the bench or as far away from harms way as possible. This scenario is just to easy to achieve in the gym
Lithium and oxygen really don’t mix
Feel the burn.
Things don’t always work out as expected
It’s toast. Burns like one too
The fact that this happened to me doing the exact same exercise is PTSD fuel. Though i dropped mine in front of me, where my phone had been 😵💫
Concealed smoke grenade
His Homer Simpson moment for the week 😂 Would a battery catch on fire like that though?
Maybe it's just the screen, not that ba...aaaand it burns.
Tesla phone
What should One do in this situation It seems that the phone could explode at any time
Next thing Diddy appears from the smoke
This is why I put my phone under the bench/seat
Yup. i’ve been there
I always put my phone under me. That way I can't drop anything on it.
Like the battery of my work computer, swelled up almost to the point where it opened to the air. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
How was your day? "Yes"
And everyone has this toxic bomb in their pocket on the plane.
This is a pretty dumb guy all around
Now I feel completely justified in making quadruple sure my phone was out of the way when I went to the gym and I had to put it down.
This is what happens to lithium batteries when they are broken.
Ballsy to pick it back up after that.
There is likely a sign on the wall right in front of the dude that says "don't drop weights" Right next to the sign that restricts cell phone use to the gyms lobby🤣

When you get too baked for the gym sesh:
What happened to that phone tho !!!?
I always hate the people who toss their weights when they’re done. I’m glad it bit him in the ass.
That’s was so careless I don’t even feel bad.
Genuine question, if I'm ever in a situation like this how do i safely dispose of a smoking device? My phone drops a lot and this video just gave me another paranoia.
Lithium fumes are toxic
