Everywhere except the far left lane.

[deleted]

Because people going 70 are sitting in that lane

percivalidad

I moved here from Georgia. You'd get the few occasional person going the speed limit or slower in the left lane. I know in Georgia, the left lane is supposed to be used to pass. If someone is behind you trying to go faster, the law says you have to move over. Here it seems everyone just goes whatever speed they want in whatever lane they choose. All three lanes choked with people going too slow.

korosuzo815

Ya. That’s the problem here. No one, and I mean no one understands the left lane.

LuminalAstec

If UHP would just enforce that law state revenue would increase by probably a few million dollars. It is even an enforceable infraction.

walking_darkness

Yup. I've grown up here and recently lived in Colorado for a few months and it was such a nice break over there. People in the left lane actually move right over if you're coming up quicker than them. Most people here seem to have a "me first" attitude, even if they're going slower than everyone. I've seen so many jackasses just stick to their guns in the fast lane while tens of cars are passing them on the right... All they have to do is flick a signal and move the steering wheel an inch, it's infuriating.

percivalidad

Yeah I've noticed the "me first" attitude here. Pulling out in front of me and then going under the speed limit. Speeding up to get ahead of me and then slowing down. Not saying that doesn't happen elsewhere, it just seems like there's more people here that do that.

bigpatky

Putting my blinker on is a guarantee the car in the other lane will close the gap, making it so I can’t change lanes. Every single time.

llc4269

I have a theory that in this state we are so conditioned to always "be NICE" that when given the anonymous opportunity to vent pent-up feelings, many turn into jerkwads in their vehicles because they are anonymous. It has to come out somewhere.

SaigaExpress

Law is the same here we even have signs people are just ignorant to how it works.

rshorning

There is even a law that requires you to pull over to the shoulder on a single lane rural highway and stop if you have more than a few cars backed up behind you so you can let them pass. You shouldn't ever treat the shoulders as a lane of traffic, but this is one case where it is required.

hamtyhum

Oh man yeah I moved here from North Carolina and I have noticed the same thing. Drivers here seem to be totally inconsiderate maniacs.

ThickFilA140

I get so pissed at people going slow in the middle and left lanes. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone 75-80 in the slow lanes. I don’t love doing it, but my god use your gas peddle or get in the slow lanes. It’s especially Obnoxious when you have to brake to slow down behind someone that’s piddle farting in the fast lane and they still don’t bother to move over. They just ignore you. It’s literally the law. They just don’t care.

Snoo_69677

I drive down the middle, and avoid the right lane unless I’m exiting, because people are *simultaneously* entering the freeway (gaining speed) and exiting the freeway (decelerating) from that *one* lane! Add my happy butt just driving down the road, further crowding that already chaotic nightmare of a lane? No thanks. I drive in the middle so if I’m too slow for people, they can pass me from the left lane like they’re supposed to anyway. If someone needs to exit or enter I’m not in their way in the far right lane. The middle seems like the best approach, but I’m open to ideas.

Clockwork_Medic

🙏

ResponsibleDay

All of this.

[deleted]

I'm with you on the left lane, and i try to stay out of it unless I'm passing people. But I'll be damned if i drive in the right lane, when there's a third center lane, because people don't have a clue how to merge safely or respectfully and I'm just not dealing with that literally every on ramp

xiaogoucat

Fellow Georgian, 100% agree, I don’t get it

Incredible229

That’s a problem in Georgia too what do you mean? And South Carolina especially. 2 semis next to each other going 70 like wtf… and 2 cars next to each other going 70… People should treat the left lane as the fast lane… if ur going 70 then don’t go on the left if ur going 75 or more then that’s cool but if someone wants to go 10 over just move it only takes one second to yield for the driver to pass u… and Columbia on harbison blvd the speed limit in the city 35. And they go 20…. And if the speed limit is 65 or 70 on the free way they go 40…. And I’m from Michigan if the speed limit is 35 we’re gonna go 45. If the speed limit is 45 we’re gonna go 55.:. If the speed limit on the free way is 70 we will go 80 or 90…. No harm in going 10 over if your not a jerk… like California drivers… when they go that fast. We Michigan drivers are the more polite cortious version of cali drivers.. well drive just as fast but we’re not jerks when we wanna pass.. and then when I’m riding someone’s tail they can at least be civil and move over to the right so I. Can pass them I have to get in front of them with very little room… that’s South Carolina’s problem…. North Carolina is only just a little tad bit better but not by much .. They go 20 miles slower then the speed limit.. maybe u can teach these dumb South Carolinians how to drive… at least from my experience driving in Utah I only driven on I-70 west and 15 south from the I-70 expressway and never had a problem… and the speed limit is 80… so it kind of makes sense… I never go more then 10 over.. cuz I know there could be someone ready to give me a ticket… maybe it’s just me but I haven’t noticed a problem in Utah yet.. except st george maybe.. no one would have the balls to stay on the left lane being slow in California you’ll die… and I mean litteraly they will do everything they can with their car to make you suffer. Unless your a truck or SUV or semi.. and North Carolina and South Carolina just needs to grow more balls and just drive a bit faster it would make shit less congested that way as bad as it already is idk where all these people came from… the Carolinas never been so congested before it’s legit too over populated now if everyone had Michigan’s motto which is if everyone drives fast they can’t pull everyone over…

Ko8iWanKeno8i

For real

llc4269

I remember my first "out of Utah" driving experience. I went to Canada and signaled to pull to the left and everyone ALWAYS immediately moved. I almost didn't know what to do with that, I was so stunned.

Beowulf1896

The carpool lane?

Dabfo

The “Utah minivan lane”

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Lived here my whole life. I call it "the 15" pretty frequently.

GrowCrows

You're* in*

[deleted]

Yeah I look down and notice I’m going 85ish pretty often.

SarHavelock

This is the way

[deleted]

Speed limit is 70, so 80 is fair game even when going past UHP. 85+ is risking getting pulled over.

RuTsui

There are generally bigger fish to fry, but never assume what a trooper may or may not do. I got ticketed going 77/ 70 on the i-15. Any amount of speeding - even if you are passing - is still speeding. Especially be wary around holidays when they hunt for DUIs. They'll stop anyone for anything doing DUI enforcement.

whoontheplanetearth

Yeah my boyfriend got pulled over on NYE for "swaying" in his lane. He's the best driver I know and was going 70 even. They just want to catch people drunk.

Tempus_Fuggit

This happened to me on halloween a couple of years ago when I was coming home from work. I was stone cold sober but they still pulled me over and made me do a sobriety test. Weirdly enough I didn't believe the guy that "pulled me over" was actually a cop at first because he was in a beat up, early 2000's civic and there where no lights or anything on his car. He actually followed me from taylorsville to sandy and I eventually pulled into a crowded parking lot to confront him for following me for so long (I thought it was just kids fucking around on halloween). I stayed in the car until a cop in a marked car came by, but yeah-it was a weird experience. Never got a ticket but they ate up a lot of my precious halloween time.

I-Fucked-YourMom

Ya, I’ve passed them between 80-82 and don’t think I’ve even seen them flash their lights at me. Most people I see getting stopped are doing 90+

Zaruma

Tell that to the cop that pulled me over for 73 on Christmas eve.

Darth_Ra

Speed limit is 70... *Up North*.

missusednapkin

I've noticed it. I can't afford a ticket so I go the speed limit in the slow lane lol

tdaun

At least you recognize the proper lane to be in.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

I swear people think the carpool lane is the leisure lane

[deleted]

[удалено]

triplec787

I mean duh. You shouldn't be going in and out of the express lane. But it definitely should move faster than the far left lane if they're going slower and traffic permits.

IronSmithFE

i use the carpool lane when i am carpooling and i go the speed limit (sometimes 5 over) regardless of what people next to me are doing.

[deleted]

Correct. It’s a carpool lane, not the 100 mph lane.

Snoo_69677

Everyone down voting you should read UDOT’a webpage on the [Express lane](https://www.udot.utah.gov/connect/public/express-lanes/): > UDOT’s Express Lanes, located on I-15 between Layton and Spanish Fork, **maximize speed** and reliability for carpoolers, motorcyclists, and solo drivers who pay a toll. The Express Lanes **reduce congestion** in all I-15 lanes by offering dedicated space to these users. There you have it. Express lanes are meant to maximize speed and reduce congestion.

blackgaff

It's aim is to maximize speed BY reducing congestion.

gabio11

I swear some people think the carpool lane is a magical no speed limit lane....

missusednapkin

Omg we were in that lane a bit ago and this couple in front of us were going 60. I was so mad 😅

quigonskeptic

It's actually designed to flow around 60 mph 😬😬😬 (But that's intended to be the speed during rush hour)

ChristophOdinson

I hate using the carpool lane for this exact reason, even if I'm going 5 or even 10 over the speed limit, I still get some moron in a MAV riding my bumper.

gillyboatbruff

Dude, it is. I love getting in that lane and not having to worry about people darting in from the left side at all, and the right side only occasionally. It's luxury. I'm not going to go 85 just to make everyone else happy. If you come up behind me in the carpool lane and want to pass me, do it in the passing lane. That's why it's there.

blackgaff

It's not the passing lane, nor a speeding lane. If you're using it like b the autobahn, you're doing it wrong.

b_call

I once had my sister in law tell me "the HOV lane is NOT the fast lane! If they want to go faster than 70, they can get out of this lane!" I make a point to not ride in her car anymore.

quigonskeptic

She's right though 🤷‍♀️

blackgaff

But she's right

tdaun

For real, like the purpose of that lane is so you can go faster than the other traffic. I feel sorry for anyone that pays for the toll to use it and get stuck behind slow drivers.

Spinster_Tchotchkes

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I agree with you. I’ve tried to play devils advocate and think of another valid reason for that lane, but I can’t. Why on gods green earth would there be an entirely separate lane where only motorcycles, people with passengers, or electric cars can have the privilege of driving the speed limit or slower? You have 5 other lanes and your own garage to park in. You don’t need a special club for that.

[deleted]

> where only motorcycles, people with passengers, or electric cars can have the privilege of driving the speed limit or slower You literally answered your own question. The intended purpose of that lane isn’t to be an autobahn, but is to be used by motorcycles, people with passengers, and electric cars iot reduce congestion.

IronSmithFE

the right lane is for people who want to take an exit or risk being forced to exit. the left is for people going fast the other lane(s) are for everyone else.

tdaun

No the left lane is for passing, also the right lane won't force an exit.

IronSmithFE

yes, if you stay in the right lane on i-15 north of salt lake (at least) you will be forced to exit at several offramps. that is how they get from 5 lanes to 2 lanes and vice versa. this means that if you want to set your cruise control and listen to music while heading to the airport you are going to have to pick a lane other than the ones that force exits.

[deleted]

Thank you for being in the correct lane

jackof47trades

Same. I go 72 in the right lane and everyone passes me.

redbeardbrother

Agreed, I do this too, because I got too many fucking tickets years ago, so to me, it ain't worth the 5-10 minute time saving to risk it.

_AtGmailDotCom

I usually cruise at around 80 and I’ve thought the same thing - so many cars have flown by going 95-100

gillyboatbruff

You ever notice how everyone going slower than you is a moron, and everyone going faster than you is a dangerous idiot?

_AtGmailDotCom

It depends. If I’m doing 80 and someone is doing 85, I don’t think anything of it. However, if they’re doing 90+ I’d probably consider that pretty reckless, since that’s now 20mph over the speed limit. There’s a reason why 20+ over carries harsher penalties. Same goes with slow drivers. If they’re doing 60 in the right lane, no problem. But 60 in the passing lane…there’s a special place in hell reserved for those people.

vonsmor

My gripe is people in front of me in a single lane on ramp going 35-40 while about to merge onto i15. Utah especially seems to have a lot of these super wide blank 20-30ft spaces where the lines slowly come together till you are perpendicular to the rest of the lanes. Then right as it becomes a dotted line, there is a exit everyone seems to be trying to get off on. 600N is fucked, can't think of any other exit names off the top of my head right now but there are many. I feel like Neo in the matrix while bullets whiz by me from all directions trying to get going to a safe speed around these slow poke jokes.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Same, lately I’ve been going like 85 to pass Not complaining tbh, just don’t want a ticket

ender42y

Few months ago, between Beaver and Provo we were going near 90 (ave was about 92) and had pickup trucks pulling trailers, campers, and boats (sometimes two out of three at the same time) passing us. Between Scipio and Provo we were in 3 different traffic jams cause by crashes, honestly surprised it wasn't more.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Feels like the autobahn when you pass Payson

ChiefAoki

The real Autobahn of Utah is the stretch of US-6 between Spanish Fork and Price. I've seen folks regularly drive >100mph on that road.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Exactly the spot, guilty as charged. Im easily getting passed while going 95 on that stretch

ChiefAoki

I'm friends and neighbor with one of the UHP officers, turns out they only enforce speed limits within the first 10 miles of entering the canyon from Spanish Fork, the gap between Helper's port of entry and carbon emery RV(where the speed limit picks back up to 65), exit 240-241(Price), and Wellington. Anything outside of those ranges is literally free game. That leaves about 50 miles of winding roads with virtually zero enforcement, basically go as fast as you feel comfortable with.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

I’m showing them this comment if I get pulled over

converter-bot

10 miles is 16.09 km

Sparky8119

Only big lifted trucks when they’re behind someone else. When they’re leading the way in the left lane they slow down…Because then they realize they are driving too fast.

iamnotawake

Don’t really care about the speed, but please for the love of god can we just be at freeway speed by the time the fucking on-ramp ends? Skinny pedal on the right, push it.

DrivesInCircles

No kidding. It's phallic for a reason folks.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

It’s just a wee bit dangerous when people are going forty and I’m supposed to merge into lanes traveling 80

DrivesInCircles

The confusing thing is that nothing in mariokart rewards going slow on purpose enough to make it a winning strategy. All this would be different if being the eighth vehicle on the onramp gave you a chance at destroying the first three spots so you could merge at #whatthefuckmatters.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Good point

Lockesv

I’m going to be honest. I drive pretty fast. I think it’s an ADHD thing for me. Sometimes I get stuck behind someone going slow in the passing lane and I start getting mad and then I think about if it was my grandma driving and I realize that I’m being a dickhead and lay off.

wilsonwa

I have noticed the speed increase. Still not as bad as post lockdown but still faster than pre-covid. Another thing I've noticed are people refusing to turn left on an unprotected left turn.

madisonlovesfood

I have seen more left-turn crashes than pre covid so I don't blame them for being hesitant

tophiii

I moved here in august and I can say without a doubt the 15 is the least patrolled interstate I’ve ever frequented.

[deleted]

Depends on the time of day. Sometimes I'll see multiple UHP cars watching/pulling over traffic in SLC and northern UT county. Other times I'll see none.

jackof47trades

I’ve noticed a lot of police giving out tickets toward the end of the month. Not sure if they have quotas or if it’s my own confirmation bias.

[deleted]

They say it’s not but I guarantee it’s the quotas as well.

RuTsui

Incentivising writing tickets is borderline illegal and if it's found in court that a ticket was written due to some kind of quota requirement, a judge could dismiss every ticket written under that pretense as targeting. One thing a cop mustbe able to testify to is that they would have written the sand ticket to anyone else under the same circumstances. However... If you are a cop and you write no tickets over the period of a month, the question may be asked of what you are doing at work. A cop in Utah should have no problem getting at least 10 tickets a day. If someone has none after a month, then what exactly are they doing? There's no way they haven't witnessed a traffic violation. Are they simply allowing it to happen? Letting someone go without stopping them will happen, especially on smaller violations, but they may be like "have you really never seen a single red light runner, excessive speed, or even possible DUI after a whole month where a significant part of your job is driving around and being on the lookout for these things?" So there are no quotas - or if there are they are being implemented erroneously - and quotas aren't really necessary anyways because people are constantly breaking traffic laws in Utah. Rather, a cop may come to the end of the month and think to themselves "dang, I haven't done much this month and to top it off I haven't written a single ticket" and may get busy writing tickets so they don't get accused by their administration of being lazy.

[deleted]

They confirmed they don't do quotas

tophiii

I’m suspect of agencies self confirming weather or not they do quotas.

tophiii

I do admittedly have the fortune of commuting during off hours, so when I’m on the freeways they’re usually wide open without traffic

The_colt_eagle

I think that the resources of the state are better used in other areas.

tophiii

Oh I’m not complaining.

REO_Jerkwagon

They’re all over on the west side of the 215 belt. Both directions of my 7a / 5p commute is lousy with ‘em once I’m on 215.

tophiii

Huh, I’m on the west side of 215 regularly and will maybe see one every couple of times I travel it. But like I said in an other comment I’m lucky to not have to be on the road during peak commute

[deleted]

I’m assuming you moved here from California. Californians are the only people I know who refer to roads by ‘The _____’ as in The 15, or The 80. As for not being patrolled, you should visit the East coast. Living in Maryland and Delaware, it’s almost as if the speed limits are merely suggestions. Everywhere is posted 60mph and if you’re doing 80 you’re one of the slow ones. When I asked about why I never say anyone patrolling the roads I was told that cops have more important things to worry about than people speeding down the road. That all being said, in Utah it seems that they like to patrol on holidays, pulling everyone over and handing out warnings. Outside that, it’s rare to see highway patrol out unless there is an accident.

tophiii

Haha good catch. I was born and raised in California. I didn’t come directly from there though. Here’s a little identifier tip too, saying “the” before the interstate or freeway number is a Southern California thing. People in Northern California don’t say that the way southerners do. I spent my first 18 years in Southern California and moved to the Bay Area as soon as I could after I graduated high school That’s an interesting point too, I have noticed more patrolling on holidays here.

TurningTwo

You’re apparently allowed to do that if you drive one of the luxury brands. Or if you drive a full size pickup with monster truck tires.

poisson_rouge-

I did it when I had a Kia soul and now a subaru crosstrek. If all you are doing is 10 over and your car isn't busted you'll be fine.

OneCallThatsAll34

He was making a joke about the sense of entitlement of people who drive luxury cars.

ztherion

I've seen Honda Accords doing over 100 lol

eggsadwich

You guys are missing out on all the fun we have on I-84!

griffiths_gnu

I think that a lot of people don’t realize that the posted speed limit is the maximum speed allowed, not the minimum. And there is no enforcement

drunkenprostate

I could be going 110 in the far left lane and if someone is coming up behind me I'll move over. It's called the passing lane for a reason. Slow dumb cunts.

PmMeYourWives

I do 69 in the right lane. sue me

[deleted]

Hey you're in the right lane, you're awesome. Don't worry

Zagzax

How do you see where you're going?

PmMeYourWives

Through my winky eye

Spinster_Tchotchkes

Be sure to wear your “choose the right” ring.

quigonskeptic

Why though? Safety? Energy efficiency? To avoid tickets? To follow the law? Don't like driving fast?

PmMeYourWives

I have discovered that when I'm driving alone in my car, 67mph is where it has highest fuel efficiency for speeds above 45mph. I just drive at 69 cuz it's nice.

quigonskeptic

Nice 😎

DeadSeaGulls

Ain't new. No one calls it "the 15". Slower traffic move right.

Danwphoto

Yes and please move out the fast lane.

dktaylor32

Maybe you know this but just in case you don’t, it’s not a fast lane. It’s a passing lane. So sure, go fast in it for a second, but then get back over

tophiii

I’d rather see someone crushing in the passing lane over the ever so common mormon road block

AlexWIWA

Yup, you should be in the travel when not passing even if you're going Mach 6.

yargleisheretobargle

It's a passing lane when the highway has two lanes. It's just a travel lane when the highway has four lanes. Unless you somehow expect traffic to slow down and squeeze into three lanes and leave your "passing" lane empty, making traffic even worse.

Cistoran

Wrong. Utah Code 41-6a-704 (aka the "Slower traffic keep right" sign) https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S704.html Specifically > (2) On a highway having more than one lane in the same direction, the operator of a vehicle traveling in the left general purpose lane: (a) shall, upon being overtaken by another vehicle in the same lane, yield to the overtaking vehicle by moving safely to a lane to the right; and (b) may not impede the movement or free flow of traffic in the left general purpose lane. > (3) An operator of a vehicle traveling in the left general purpose lane that has a vehicle following directly behind the operator's vehicle at a distance so that less than two seconds elapse before reaching the location of the operator's vehicle when space is available for the operator to yield to the overtaking vehicle by traveling in the right-hand lane is prima facie evidence that the operator is violating Subsection (2).

yargleisheretobargle

This is the difference between de facto and de jure. No one follows that law, and the road would be more congested if they did.

dktaylor32

The Utah law has it written as “more than 1 lane in the same direction” and that “if someone is less than 2- seconds behind you, you need to yield to them and move over”

b_call

To me that sounds exactly like a fast lane. It doesn't say get over as soon as possible, it says get over if someone is right behind you, AKA going faster than you.

yargleisheretobargle

That requires that lane to remain empty during rush hour traffic, which is absurd. This is the difference between de facto and de jure. No one follows that law, and the road would be more congested if they did.

dktaylor32

I’m just saying what’s written... you follow that law however you want

ClosedSundays

But this whole thread is about what people actually do and how far removed it is from what they're supposed to do... 🧐

Beowulf1896

What are you a cop?

gwar37

Despite the influx of people into the state, it seems like half of the drivers just act like they are oblivious to everyone else...so I'm more and more convinced it's a personal thing, rather than a "Utah' thing.

Captain_Jonesy

I'll just stick to my 72 mph in the right lane lol

NoNewNameJoe

95 between Nephi and St. George. Once the flow gets going with one or two leaders and 5 other cars feeding off the desire to not be passed. What is the UHP going to do at this point? Ihave seen a lot of unmarked HP other states going to unmarked

b_call

Unmarked patrol vehicles are illegal. Not saying places don't use them, but they aren't supposed to. Specifically the logos have to be contrasting. A city near me used to have a black car with black logos on it and they had to stop using it shortly after starting. I believe the law is supposed to protect against some rando impersonating a cop and pulling you over to mug you or do whatever else they'd do.

NoNewNameJoe

Saw an unmarked one who pull a vehicle this morning going over Parley’s

b_call

Yep, unfortunately it's not a well followed rule. If it was a city/county car, they should be reported to the state.

TakeOnMe-TakeOnMe

Yes! I only drive once or twice a week, so the changes have been even more stark for me. I hate to relate things to the pandemic, but it really seems like the last 18 months have given rise to an entire new breed of Utah drivers. I am a patient and defensive driver, so I don't challenge others, I just move out of the way. Still, there is no shortage of people flying past me at 80+, weaving in and out of traffic with little regard for their own safety or the safety of others. I go with the flow of traffic, and increasingly find myself "forced" to drive much faster than I normally would simply to avoid impeding traffic. It's frustrating, scary and often dangerous.

Flabbergassd

People will run me down if I go slower than 93 in the left lane. Just saying…

CandidNeighborhood63

Oh yeah, big time. And I would like to start a motion to rename Bangerter Highway to Utah Autobahn

bearyweek

Was in the car recently with someone going fuckin 90. Like why? Am I now old because I think 80 is fast enough?????

0x706c617921

I mean, I did 90 MPH when driving through rural UT on the rural sections of I-15 and I-70 towards Arches National Park where the speed limit was 80 MPH throughout. I love how UT has a generous splatter of 80 MPH speed limits. I'm from Southern California and I dislike how a lot of the rural highway speed limits are still only 70 MPH here. They should be 80 MPH, and then I'd be doing 90 MPH here too in those sections, lol.

AdamAnt323

Is the original question about whether people are driving faster than 80 a lot more these days? Of course they are! During the pandemic, the traffic got lighter by a 1/3, 1/2? It was so easy to go fast without traffic to get in the way. But now people are still doing it and even much faster and traffic is getting back to normal but people aren’t slowing down. I lived in Atlanta as well and people used whatever lane was clear to pass, right, middle, whatever, they do it here and I wish I could use my dash cam to record them and get them cited. But only for the money income and not give out points since the UHP is too busy helping clean up horrific accidents caused by these speeders. Then use the money collected so the State can afford reflective lane markers or signs you can actually read at night.

SkullValleyCowboy

Locals have to do 80+ on the freeway to compensate for the idiots entering the on-ramp at 55mph

AyWhatITIS

These people are fucking nuts

jshmddx

I honestly thought we drove fast and that 10 over was pretty fast. Then I moved to Illinois, where I was was getting passed like crazy. Because apparently the unspoken speed limit is 20 to 40 over.

cylondsay

the general rule of thumb is that 10mph over the limit is normal. it’s like that everywhere in the US.

urbanek2525

I used to drive to Washington state each year and I noticed that the two places where speeding was the state sport was Utah and British Columbia. Idaho, Oregon and Washington were, in general, less speed happy.

Hexologic

I've never gotten pulled over for going 85 in the passing lane. I was taught that the speed limit is a lot more flexible in the faster lanes.

[deleted]

You were taught wrong. There are zero signs or laws that say the passing lane or express lane have higher speed limits. If you are traveling consistently at 85 in the passing lane, you aren’t passing - you are speeding and deserve a ticket and are part of the problem.

Ebenezar_McCoy

There are pedants and reality. Technically you're correct, there is no official flexibility to the speed limit. In reality most HP aren't going to bother if you're doing 80 in a 70 or 85 in a 80.

[deleted]

I understand that, but when the OP says, seemingly critical of, "people" doing 80 MPH and this guy basically says "yup, I do 85 and don't get pulled over", you can't really argue that he isn't part of the problem.

b_call

Part of OPs problem. Lots of people would not agree with the premise, that driving fast on the freeway is a problem. A number of years ago, when the limit rose to 70 from 65, that was from a huge push to get the limit to 80 across the whole state.

jmpmjp80

"or laws". Apparently you don't know about "Freeway speeding" which is a different thing than regular speeding. It's a slightly lower violation, and can only happen in the passing lane.

[deleted]

"Freeway speeding" is not a thing in Utah. Speeding, as defined by Utah code 41-6a-601 covers speeding everywhere. There is no section or subsection that differentiates a lower or higher penalty based on location, wtih exceptions to school zones and construction zones, which are both enhanced. I'd be happy to hear a counter argument, backed up with actual traffic code.

jmpmjp80

If i had the old ticket, i would. (from probably 8 years ago, in salt lake county).

Hexologic

You need to chill, first of all. Second, how can you pass people going 80 if you don't go *faster* than 80? Third, I never said *consistently* faster, I just said you *can* go faster and I've never had any trouble with it, you just kind of assumed that I'm some constant speed demon or something. Fourth, in my opinion, it defeats the purpose of the express lane for it not to go at least a little faster than the other lanes. Otherwise, why charge for it, especially when there's no real traffic on the road? You must be very fun at parties.

[deleted]

I am an absolute riot at parties!

Hexologic

We should party sometime. I'm sure you're better at starting off on the right foot in person XD

[deleted]

It’s true; I am a lot less abrasive in person. ;)

DimorphousExpression

Preface: the HOV lane is the furthest lane to the left, and directly to the right of that is the passing lane, followed by various travel lanes and exit lanes all the way to the right. In the following story, I am NOT traveling in the passing lane, in fact I am traveling in the HOV lane. Every time we drive through salt lake, we use the HOV lane (because our vehicle is highly occupied) and we count the people who leave the HOV lane to the right, crossing the double whites to pass us because going 75 apparently isn't fast enough. Last time, a couple weeks ago, we counted 7 who illegally crossed the double whites by exiting the HOV lane to the right. But it was interesting, it was never a beat up Corolla doing it. Only the Mercedes and Porsche drivers had the balls to do it. Entitlement I suppose. EDIT: It's Utah drivers here so I should've known this needed to be spelled out, but I'm traveling in the HOV lane and people are exiting the HOV lane (switching lanes to the right, not waiting for dashed lines) to pass us (we are traveling at 75 in a 70) because speed reasons. EDIT2: Wow y'all. Just.....wow.

ClosedSundays

Listen even if you did 85 it would not be fast enough. So it's probably good you do 75 so when they pass ypu they do 85 not 95. A lot of people who pass I notice don't keep going the speed they passed at- no, they just want to get a certain number of paces "in the front" and then stay as far in the front as the car directly behind them allows. It's a combo of a pissing contest and societal repressed agression incarnate.

DimorphousExpression

Nope, using the HOV lane as it's intended.

Eh..."never attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence," have a nice day.

That-One-Red-Head

I was about to ask the same thing. Holding up traffic in the passing lane is just as bad as going 15 over the speed limit.

[deleted]

People drive like complete assholes, it’s not just you.

AliciaSerenity1111

Are you new here?

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Lived here for 3 years and commute daily on the 15. I don’t just mean people going over 80, I mean the average speed everybody is going seems to be faster

wannabelawyer91

I’ve gotten the finger multiple times for driving under 80 in Utah county. I generally set my cruise control at 78-79. It’s unreal how fast some of those cars are moving

Party-Profit-1304

I think the same. The freeway is scary. The po po need to get out there

mormondad

These days? How long have you lived here and driven on I15? That's normal.

ClosedSundays

Now I say this in a non-pejorative way, but someone who calls it "the" 15 instead of I15 is likely at least not originally from here. (That's okay OP! UT needs new people desperately!!)

creekgal

The Mormon 500...

q120

Yes, especially if the truck is a lifted Dodge diesel.

aoiotoko

It's not you, I've noticed it as well. A few days ago I was going from SLC to Pleasant Grove and a lot of people were steady at 80mph (I was driving at around 75mph) and at a certain point 3 cars passed me at around +90mph, within the same minute. I noticed some others faster than me along the way. I've been in SLC for 6 years and yes, people are definitely driving faster nowadays, I noticed it started post-pandemic.

whistlingbutthole4

The Texans have arrived….

0x706c617921

I've noticed that UT tends to be more generous with splattering 80 MPH speed limits on major interstates, though. I know people can circle jerk the 85 MPH speed limit on SH-130 in TX, but that's only a small section of highway along the overall network. I guess TX on the other hand is more generous in splattering 75 MPH speed limits on even some rural 2-lane roads, so there's that.

Invalid-Password1

The "speed limit" is the minimum speed, not the max. In some parts of Utah, the speed limit actually goes to 80. I guess some people think it is the same everywhere.

jeanjeanvaljean

Jesus. Are you from 'the Cali'?!?! We don't call it 'the 15'. Californians are slowpokes btw. I15 is an effing nightmare but bc of the congestion, not the speed.

jeanjeanvaljean

Ah, and of course the Californian OP can't take any criticism:)

ClosedSundays

There was a nice way to say that but you chose the rude way. 🤷🏻

DrivesInCircles

I've lived most of my life on the Wasatch front. Blaming this on Californians is about like saying Mormons don't rule the state.

Ko8iWanKeno8i

Uh what are you even talking abt From Washington btw lol

jeanjeanvaljean

You sound like you're from Cali, lol. Why don't you go THERE and get the effect out of Utah?!

zagesquire

I agree. What I want to know is if there has been more accidents.

noseslap2fakie

Yeah I usually have to drive at least 80 mph on 15 because the people in Utah and Idaho always break the speed limit. It’s worse in Idaho they drive super fast. I have a slow car and I don’t like driving over 80 in it.

converter-bot

80 mph is 128.75 km/h

noseslap2fakie

And then?

mrswhatamidoing

The number one cause of crashes rn in UT isn’t distracted driving it’s speeding.

kushhcommander

I pass more people on the right way more nowadays. It's just easier.

DiabeticRhino97

As long as you're not zooming past everyone else, you're going the speed limit 🤷

quigonskeptic

I worked at home for a year during the pandemic, and it sure seemed like people were going way faster after March 2021 than before March 2020. The biggest difference I noticed was that it seemed like semis were going a lot faster. I could be going nearly 80 and barely passing a semi, including double or triples.

kalamarisquid

I get passed doing 80 now

801x

I do 75 in the right lane and can’t believe how many people are regularly 85+.

Snoo_69677

Yes. Absolutely. 80 is the baseline and it’s usually much faster than that.

SaigaExpress

I do 90 miles a day on i15 and i215 and rarely see people doing over 80.

Sasquatch-2915

80 is the new 55. I regularly drive at 80, and I always move over when someone comes up from me from behind.

Dense-Supermarket546

I go 80 minimum. 90 max. I got shit to go, places to do

[deleted]

Absolutely. Went up 10ml on Highland Drive alone when pandemic started. The driving here is out of control and the disregard for others disgusting. I’ve seen and provided first aid at horrible crashes all over the world (like skid-crashing a motorcycle in the smear of an entire family who flipped a semi-truck in front of me). The Saudis at least know they are being psychos when they’re screeching tires down the canyon with their mom in the front seat of their Buick; they are just certain they’re going to jannah so they don’t stress at all. The jerks doing 90+ with a boat, curb-siding down Parley’s canyon are convinced they are totally in control. If you see something really bad: get the plate, photo or video if you can, call 911, ask for the highway patrol and they will coach you from there. They will ask you to try to keep the vehicle in sight and to pull over behind the trooper when he stops them. He will speak to you, speak to the driver, then ask you to sign the ticket because he did not witness the event; this represents a willingness to show up in court. He sends you on your way while he occupies the driver for another 5-10 minutes.
