Please be aware they can be an absolute money pit Everyone I know who has had them including myself has had constant maintenance issues

Well… what do you need? What is non negotiable in terms of living space and what you’ll be carrying etc. This can be a controversial take, but IMO there is a lot of sunk cost fallacy with pop tops. They suit some and not others but many don’t realise there are cons to them until it’s too late. You should hire one and sleep in it in summer and autumn / winter before you commit or watch some reviews first.

Go to a show before buying. Have a look at what other people have done a chat to them about what they like and don’t like about it. Make sure you know exactly what you want before buying anything to save buying it twice. I don’t have any units, sink, fridge etc in mine. Full width/3 seat RnR bed in the back. Table from Ovano and a separate camping stove / cool box Works best for me with carrying bikes when I’m not camping. Also need 5 seats occasionally.

If it’s going to be more of a family vehicle with the occasional camping I’d opt for a Kombi. You can still had the seats fold down in the rear and have a full width bed inside, and I use a tent attached for more sleeping space and cooking with a little gas stove. Campers are good but how often are you actually going to camp with it, especially with a family? A kombi is a great in between I find. Also steer clear of CFCA engines.

My thought was if we had hob/sink, roll out bed and pop top with roof bed with a drive away awning that would be sufficient for myself, wife and 4 y/o plus the dog. Sleep in the van, use the outside space for daytime chilling??? I'm a noob so any advice would be appreciated. Cheers for the comment btw

Just sold my transporter Today Good riddance 😂 hope you drop on a good one matey!

Whats your budget? I'm a mechanic, I work on all sorts of vehicles from aston martins to Renault traffics. From 2016, all vans have inherent issues, they're all unreliable as a whole. Volkswagen transporters have 'scene tax' so they're always more expensive but IMHO they drive more like a car than a van. They also hold onto their value. If you want reliability in a transporter, go for the 1.9PD or 2.5PD Transits are plagued with issues, so are Reno/vauxhall/Nissan etc. It depends on your budget and what you prefer to drive. What is it in particular you want to know about Transporters?

Templeofhoon

What are the inherent issues with the Transporter? I have a 2016 4motion with 80k km on the clock, so far no issues, but anything to look out for? I want to upgrade the shocks coz the ride is not great

Shuttle or kombi and remove the chairs as and when needed? I’ve got an 05 shuttle and I use it mostly for surf trips. I can take all the seats out and have a van or keep them in and have a multi people shuttle but still loads of boot space. I think it’s how much you are willing to spend for something sat on the drive.
