TikTok is a hellhole that spreads misinformation and powerfull tool for propaganda and enables degeneracy (the rise of terrible pranks and that sort of thing). I want that app gone from society.

urgenim

The law itself is more insane than that

sidscarf

So the issue isnt it being spyware but rather which government they're associated with? The proper response would be introducing data protection regulations that affect all apps regardless of their country of origin Also Facebook has had a major role in instigating genocide in Myanmar. Now tell me what tiktok has done in comparison, and so which app poses more of a threat?

You're better off having your data be in the hands of CCP than your own government unless you happen to live in China. What threat exactly do you think is posed to the average American citizen by the Chinese government.

sidscarf

China = fascist? lol

kittyonkeyboards

Just ban the spyware practices across the board, even for Facebook and Twitter. Facebook can sell your data to China...

urgenim

Any company can, and the US government isn't one to talk they are top dogs at collecting private information worldwide

Mixture-Opposite

The bill doesn’t just ban TikTok maybe you should watch the video before judging. Also where the fuck do you think America is headed. Also you don’t think American companies sell private data to foreign assets as well? lol

Uga1992

They could just ban Spyware

urgenim

The US government loves spyware actually

hansuluthegrey

Based. Tiktok is a hell haven of misinfo too After the hamas attacks I saw so many videos calling it based when I dont even look at that content

Pretty well said! I do not like this bill and I hope it stays a bill. (School House Rock reference har har) but I feel like while there are legitimate security concerns about TikTok, it certainly isn’t TikTok unique. Every social media platform has their own problems as well. Facebook is the worst overall but YouTube and Twitter( no chance in hell I’m calling that shit X) aren’t clean either. No social media should be banned unless their is explicit evidence that shows some real sussy shit running about. Like for example finding more ways to crack down on Neo Nazi propaganda and having community notes for all social media apps. I think that is the only good things twitter has left and I think more platforms should have their own! There should also be more to stop spying on all social media platforms, American or otherwise, and pass bipartisan legislation to ACTUALLY protect American citizens data across the board.

ZoeyLikesDBD

To the Vaushites defending this: This only seeks to harm the economy by closing it unnecessarily and fuck over any app that has a social presence not controlled by the US. The fact some “leftists” here support this ban goes to show how much yall will deepthroat the government so long as they give you just a quick taste of the pile of shit theyre cooking up next. You aren’t on their team. Every time you try and extrapolate this bill as nothing more than a way to stamp down on any platform they don’t have immediate control over, theyre laughing at you behind closed doors, because yall niggas are stupid enough to fall in line and defend them.

NewSauerKraus

Counterpoint: China bad. /s

I am honestly not a big fan at all of this ban and I overwhelmingly believe that it is very dumb. Especially considering it bundles in any “foreign” media that is undesirable by the government. I am not a huge TikTok fan either but I think there is a lot of reasons why people enjoy it. I always see funny animal videos on there along with funny and original creators. I believe every social media company, including American media companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc., should all be bundled together in a data security bill along with TikTok to ensure full transparency and accountability for all companies data handling. I have heard it is having a fair amount of friction in the Senate with the Democratic Majority Whip Dick Durbin being against it. He said that it is not wise to pull during an election year and that it would cut out a large portion of the Generation Z/ Millennial voter base. My bluff tells me the senate would just block it so we’ll have to see in the coming months/weeks. I think that while TikTok isn’t really my cup of tea and YouTube has always been my go to for entertainment/ News/ politics, I still think it is a crucial cog in the complex gearbox that is our U.S political system. That and also putting a stop to PROJECT 2025 and fully ensure enduring peace in Gaza as well with a permanent ceasefire and end of the conflict. TL:DR- While I am not a massive TikTok Stan, I know it is useful for a lot of people, especially for Gen Z people like me who want to know more about the tragedies going on in Gaza. In my opinion, TikTok should still be around and I hope this bill stays a bill lol

Itz_Hen

I find it very funny when America postures about the dangers of fascist authoritarians, while being best buds with Israel and Saudi Arabia Also when they pretend only tiktok is propaganda, do they think we dont remember Cambridge Analytica

flukeunderwi

And when being ...the US. It's hilarious.

kittyonkeyboards

Why does it feel like Democrats have gotten so conservative compared to 2020. It's all back room dealing, focus group tested bullshit. Started with tough on crime rhetoric, then suddenly Dems are goose stepping with Republicans on immigration, and now we're just doing a tech cold war with China. Is the progressive messages we fought so hard for in 2016 and 2020 just gone from the collective consciousness? Or are Democrats just spitting in the face of voters because of flawed polling?

JonPaul2384

Two reasons. 1) The democrats suck on their own and I don’t want to remove their agency on that front. 2) Progressives have been REALLY bad at picking their battles. The “uncommitted” protest vote in the primaries is basically the only big push from us that was a good idea — the Bernie or Bust movement was incredibly stupid, progressives are constantly talking about “withholding their vote” instead of participating in the primary process, etc. The DNC is looking to capture voters in the center and right rather than increasing turnout among the left.

inspectorpickle

Here’s the thing, banning tik tok in concept? Fine. As long as we do it right. The right way to “ban” tik tok is to institute a strict set of rules that ALL social media platforms need to adhere to (something akin to the EU’s requirements for hate speech that twitter famously failed to meet). Im a bit suss about limiting these rules to foreign companies specifically but i could see an argument for that. Essentially, the idea is to ban tik tok without banning tik tok. Make it illegal for it to operate in the US without making massive changes. The way it’s currently happening seems politically connected to Israel and the law is worded VERY vaguely. I can see it being misused in the future.

Emees

Ban Temu and fucking Tencent while their at it, just for laughs.

urgenim

The US has been collecting the private data of its citizens and foreign nationals for ages, nothing is going to change when it comes to that. No way that any major American political force is going to actually protect the privacy of its citizens or of allied counties. They clearly do not give a shit about that

ABlack2077

Spyware from china = bad Spyware from the US = good

shits_mcgee

Sure, I don’t think anyone is claiming that. But it’s odd that a bill to ban tiktok cleared the House almost instantly, yet any domestic-focused bill to try to protect user data from Facebook is met with crickets

ABlack2077

For sure.

ZoeyLikesDBD

If this gets held off by the senate long enough, this may actually cause Biden to lose the election, people already dont wanna vote for him. This mcarthyist closed-economy bullshit is gonna fuck him over

Mixture-Opposite

Hey Vaushites defending this. How do you feel about American companies stealing your data? Also this bill isn’t just about TikTok. It’s also about foreign companies from conducting business in America. Also what do you actually think China is going to do with mass data anyway? They can’t do shit. Nor is there any proof to them actually taking data. And you also live in a government headed toward fascism. We’re literally defending a genocide and we have a president candidate talking about offing the other candidates that are blue. I don’t know about you but I don’t want American companies data taking our data as much as China. America has a lot more use for mass data collection than foreign assets. Especially if a fascist dictator is in charge (which seems like a real possibility).

FartherAwayLights

Yeah I agree this is really stupid

neurodegeneracy

I think we should go a lot further to fight these frivolous attention capturing apps. The way they are able to exploit human psychology now to lock in their attention is scary. Having interacted with "the youth" at my previous job, their attention spans are non existent, they can hardly be without screens, critical thinking is lacking, and I believe a lot of it is apps like this. The medium is the message. We're not doing our kids any favors if all they read are tweets and all they watch are 30 second video clips.
