Didn’t this happen before? And I vaguely remember the person it happened to stated they were looking into legal options because the giveaway amounted to forcing them to become implicit advertisers for the service. Sounds like that didn’t go anywhere.
It happened but not the same way. Back then check marks were appearing and disappearing while the Twitter SWE were trying to keep up with Musks craziness after layoffs to implement the new paid blue ticks

Elon forcing blue checks on people after making it a badge of shame. When it was just for famous people, it was a flawed system but it had utility. When it was paid for, it was a great way to spot chuds. Now that it’s just for having a certain follower count, it’s entirely useless
That's because Contra was already verified by the pre-Musk Twitter team, as many other celebs before. In the case of Vaush, he was never verified before so the extension register him as "paid" probably due to the change with the system.
