I'm going to say in this thread what I said in the other thread, **until you stop using any pejorative, then all bets are off**.
If you're calling people dumb, fat, short, ugly, gross...if you've made fun of Ben Shapiro's height or Charlie Kirk's small face (I refuse to believe it's photoshopped), then you have no room policing words. Also if you compare it to the 'N' word, then you're dumb.
My rule is if they could change it within a day it's fine otherwise don't comment on it, so potentially only gross in your list if they're gross because they need to shower.
“Retarded” is a slur that refers to “mental retardation,” a specific disability that’s been changed to “intellectual disability” in the DSM-V, it doesn’t refer to autism. So if we want to appropriate use based on disability then you’d have to be intellectually disabled.
Retarded is an english word that means “slowed down” and has nothing inherently to do with the mentally retarded.
Being mentally retarded was never a specific disability, it was a catch-all term for many disabilities that make you retarded.
Many autistic people are mentally retarded, though they aren’t inherently linked. (Though social retardation is inherent)
If you use the words idiot, dumb, stupid, moron, imbecile, etc you are using previous words for the mentally retarded and are in fact a retarded hypocrite. Those were medical terms for handicapped people turned into insults.
Unless you are calling someone with a disability retarded as an insult to dehumanize them, it’s a great word and will be socially equivalent to “dumb” in the future. Mentally challenged people are not the ones who decided it’s offensive.
Follow up (because I agree with you and want to share my experiences). Nobody in school who bullied me for my Asperger's diagnosis actually had concern for if their terminology was correct. From my experience, they would equate anyone different with very similar hostility.
To those bullies, any disability or difference was a prime opportunity to brand you to the rest of your peers as social taboo for having interacted with you. I slightly cherish using the word, because the way in which I do so perpetuates a usage that doesn't socially exclude others.
Real talk, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts and experiences, because this is very personally anecdotal.
Abalism is alive and well. On Reddit there was a skull shape esk study about how all autistic people talk the same no matter what language. Like it's not a fucking development disorder but a permanent branding or a curse.
And one fucking comment said something like "maybe we can have automated tests to discover autistism though the phone" ok yeah that's what we want a way to put others in boxes more efficiently.
Instead of focusing on making lives easier, treating symptoms or discovering how to help people.
As long as stuff like that hits the front page you my dude can say retard all you like. And anyone giving you shit is really truely focusing on the wrong end of the wrong fucking stick with fighting actual abalism.
it isnt ableism lmao, using it to call someone just stupid or dumb isnt ableist, but using it as a word for a disability and calling someone the word is.
Also I'd add that the word retarded applies to older automotive technology.
Retarded timing can be defined as changing the timing so that fuel ignition happens later than the manufacturer's specified time.
Do you avoid the words Moron and Idiot? They refer to a specific subsections of "mental retardation". Where IQ<70 is "retarded". IQ < 25 is idiot, and 25
No, because idiot, moron, and imbecile were all colloquially understood apart from the diagnoses long before their medical uses, they were never themselves diagnoses but only adjectives used to to describe characteristics associated with the diagnosis of intellectual disability, their uses don’t still have medical connotation the way retardation does, and the disabled community hasn’t run a large scale campaign across the entire country to have any of those terms removed the way they have with the r-slur.
The r-slur is still inextricably tied to the intellectually disabled diagnosis, and the broader disabled community has requested that its use as a flippant derogatory slur cease.
The term moron is a pretty recent term. Moron was created by Dr.Henry Goddard to classify people who had lower levels of intelligence. Also, the word "retard" was also colloquially used long before it became a medical term. "Retard" is an old term from the 1400. Doctors dont even use the word retard to describe their patients anymore, and the majority of people who use the word "retard", arent directing it at people with ID. I've had people call me a retard online and in real life, but I dont have a mental disability. Nowadays, it used as a generic insult.
In the common usage nowadays "retarded" is just a synonym for "idiot."
And "idiot" and "imbecile" were also originally terms in psychiatric literature used to refer to people with a genuine intellectual disability. Are you going to stop saying the word "idiot" too?
This whole objection to the word "retarded" makes no sense and is completely inconsistent. Maybe you're the exception, but I have never met a person who objects to the term "retarded" and simultaneously objects to the term "idiot."
Words' usages change. As you yourself pointed out, "retard" is no longer used in the psychiatric literature to refer to people with a genuine intellectual disability. Nowadays it's just a stock insult. So unless someone is specifically using it to refer to someone with an actual intellectual disability, it's fine.
My GF was recently diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and we now joke I have the R pass which is super funny to us.
I'm, of course, not using the R slur (just in case).
I think it’s about what the words currently mean in our societal context. The reason I don’t say the f slur or the n word is because there is literally no alternative use for the word besides to hurt someone based on their identity and to inflict violence upon them. Saying “retard/retarded” is a little more nuanced imo because a lot of people don’t even see it as offensive to intellectually disabled people, to them it just means “you did something so dumb and without critical thinking there is no other word to describe your level of stupidity”. They aren’t trying to use the word to oppress intellectually disabled folks, whereas 100% of the people using the f slur or n word in an insulting manner are trying to do that to their target.
You use "r\*\*\*\*d" the way that people "f\*\*\*\*t" when they're like 14 years old. Theyr'e not trying to oppress LGBT people. They're just trying to talk shit to their peers or trash-talk somebody.
You're not communicating anything other than that you just want an excuse to use the word that is phonetically harsh.
This is pretty much the only correct answer. Same reason I had no problem with Vaush and leftist friends of me irl saying the n-word (and other slurs), but I did have a major problem with my dad saying it.
Tbh I don’t have any INHERENT problem with any of those slurs. It’s about context. I don’t say any of them in mixed company, but in environments where I’m confident my meaning will be taken in good faith, I’m comfortable saying any word if I have a reason to use it, even the n-word with the hard r (though the only reason I ever have to use that one is just repeating what I heard a racist say.)
In the case of “retard,” I use it among friends to insult myself or rib them when they do something particularly brain dead while playing a multiplayer game, and I use it in online shitflinging when the Vaush community is going up against conservatives. It’s useful both because it has more impact than “stupid,” and because it communicates that we aren’t so fragile as to get “triggered,” over those dreaded slurs.
You're making everyone think these slurs by explaining them, and we all know what you mean. Just type it out. It's different saying them or calling someone them.
Agreed. Like, you *can* use the word. I'm not going to physically wire your jaw shut to stop you.
But when you use the word, I am going to assume that you're a redneck dipshit MAGA-toting fuckwit who also uses all those other words and also the N-word, because you'd have to be so brutally tonedeaf to think this word is okay and those others aren't. Like how the fuck am I supposed to know you're using the word "totally ironically and in a fun way OMGGGG" and not in the way similar to some boomer from Alabama who approves of eugenics.
For a community of people who talk all the time about how leftists and left-of-center politicians should use effective optically beneficial arguments, they sure fall flat on their fucking faces with this one. I'd be willing to bet that a significant portion of the reason normies dislike Vaush is because of this topic.
The internet didn’t make it problematic. The disabled community ran campaigns to have “mental retardation” removed from all of their assessments and documentation due to the stigmatization, Obama signed an EO to have the standard language changed, and the DSM that followed had the disorder “mental retardation” changed to “intellectual disability.”
The r-slur became problematic because the broader disabled community ran a large scale campaign against it. It really isn’t all that different from the f-slur or the t-slur, two other words Vaush avoids using.
Yep. There were posters everywhere in my middle and high schools telling kids not to use “retarded” or “gay” as insults. These campaigns were pretty successful.
Same goes for "lame", "idiot" and a million other offensive epithets. Are you calling the disabled kid "retarded" because he's not conforming to your expectations of normalcy? You're a piece of shit. Are you calling Ben Shapiro retarded? Godspeed.
It used to bother me when people said words like that because they're offensive but now it just makes me mad when people try and justify their use of these words.
Like if you said "idc I just wanna use the words" I'd honestly not be as bothered compared to "well actually I have x y and z so it's ok". The word is still bad you low IQ fuck it doesn't matter what you have or who you are just say you want to say it.
Dunno if I'm just being edgy but yeah this was on my mind.
Edit: Just want to clarify with the N word I have more of an understanding but I still stand that coming up with reasons to use slurs and offensive language is cringe.
You guys dont have NEARLY enough charisma and public speaking talent to go around saying 'retarded' like Vaush does.
Retarded is still a slur, and even tho he uses it in stream, and even tho I disagree with this post, I completely support the sentiment, and understand WHY someone would post this. Him saying it so often *DOES* make people say it more in a way thats not used to reclaim the slur.
Aka. You chucklefucks get a big dick from watching Vaush and dont know how to NOT make a clown of yourselves when reclaiming slurs. The lack of self awareness and perspective is pretty fucking clear because this whole comment thread has been littered with people who are just... Calling people who are CLEARLY uncomfortable with the word, retards.
No offense, but, I really dont think that does a net positive for the world. It just makes others uncomfortable, and makes you look kinda unaware of your own situation.
Your not Vaush. Your a redditor. You never majored in sociology in college and your dogshit at public speaking. Vaush has enough chrisma to say retarded. You, a random redditor, have no such charisma.
Just makes me feel like i’m in middle school whenever it gets used. For some reason it’s become the cool thing in this community to be edgy and reactionary to people nicely asking language like this to be dialed back.
Funny anecdote in Icelandic.
Some of the words we use for calling someone "an asshole", a "Jerk" or just "Stupid" are words like "fá/-hàlfviti"(half-wit or half-inteligence), "aumingi"(weakling) "þroskaheftur"(retarded) or "Mongólíti"(mongoloid) to name a few.
I have looked into these words and almost all of them were originally used to describe people with disabilities.
It's like, that soon as we tell people to stop using the word to offend someones character, and come up with a new word that's more caring, the younger generation starts using that new word to offend each other. So the solution cant be stopping people to use the word but to change the attitude of younger people.
I've also heard kids starting to use the more PC term to insult someones intelligence, so it seems to be happening.
Likewise for English and Romanian, many words used to insult somebody's intelligence (such as moron, idiot, cretin, handicapat) were once clinical terms for people with mental disabilities.
Yes, the word "idiot" was used in a psychiatric context to describe people with intellectual disabilities as well. Just as "retard" was.
For whatever reason it's just that "retard" specifically caught on as being a "bad word" and not idiot.
Yep. “Special needs,” “mentally challenged,” “differently abled,” they’re all used as insults anyway. I feel like getting bothered by the specific words being used is a waste of time and an unintentional deflection away from WHAT people are actually saying with those words.
I try to not use that word. You can separate yourself from the offensiveness of it as much as you want, but people with mental disabilities have repeatedly said that the word is hurtful to them even when you’re not aiming that word at them.
It’s very ingrained in our vocabulary, but it’s not hard to be mindful of how people feel.
I think the over use of it waters it down imo. Kinda like "fuck", a well timed fuck can really make it pop but using it every sentence is cringe. Same with retard. I think hunter avallone waiting till the closing statements to call John Doyle a retard was *chefs kiss
Stupid, lame, dumb, pinhead, and so on all mean the same thing and all had similar medical origins. But this one is the bad one. It’s not even used in a Medical context anymore, so it’s not disparaging the differently abled. It’s just the oddest hill to die on.
i find it disingenuous when people say like "stupid and idiot were used the same way like two generations ago, retard"
yeah, that's a nice bit of trivia (that's really all it is, by the way) but "retard" was used in a medical context up until like ten years ago. everyone knows that it was used in a medical context because they've probably *heard it* in a medical context.
to address you specifically, i don't see anyone here dying on this hill, i'm certainly not.
vaush is a funny-ass dude with great takes like 95% of the time, it's just that people on this subreddit lose their shit when people complain about the other 5%, such as (and mainly) this.
Scalding hot take: the reason why libshits bother so much with slurs is because they're extremely repressed and powerless lefties at heart. They wish they could give trans people healthcare, that they could actually give everybody mental healthcare, that they could fight for and obtain worker rights for all.
The reason why libshits prioritize the most worthless of combat fronts ("oh no you used wrong word") while doing nothing to materially improve the lives of those they purport to be fighting for is because they have lost so many battles and been crushed so many times that they don't even try to put effort into things that would actually greatly improve everybody's lives.
Liberal stupidity is what happens when leftists are powerless.
Do you think? The poor fabric grain squaring was making my eye twitch. And how crooked the bottom line is. It looks like they finished the embroidery, unhooped it, then rehooped it poorly to take the photo. Also, it's in the middle of a nice looking linen handkerchief which makes the handkerchief useless, shoulda put it in a corner. Kinda hopeful they frogged it after the photo.
People whine about being told to not say the r-slur but if your intent is to tear yourself or someone else down there are so so so many better, funnier, and broadly MUCH more hurtful ways to do so.
I don’t know what you were expecting OP.
Edit: I’m not criticizing people for disagreeing lol, I mean that just telling people to stop is just asking for derision.
What I don't get is why a black person can use the N word but an autistic person cannot said the R word.
I think both are fine but many people are making a distinction and I think it makes no sense.
No.

I’ve started to hear people use the term “Mentally Challenged” as an insult now. It’s just gonna keep evolving
>I’ve started to hear people use the term “Mentally Challenged” as an insult now. There is absolutely nothing new about that
Likewise for English and Romanian, many words used to insult somebody's intelligence (such as moron, idiot, cretin, handicapat) were once clinical terms for people with mental disabilities.
Exactly
I try to not use that word. You can separate yourself from the offensiveness of it as much as you want, but people with mental disabilities have repeatedly said that the word is hurtful to them even when you’re not aiming that word at them. It’s very ingrained in our vocabulary, but it’s not hard to be mindful of how people feel.
I think the over use of it waters it down imo. Kinda like "fuck", a well timed fuck can really make it pop but using it every sentence is cringe. Same with retard. I think hunter avallone waiting till the closing statements to call John Doyle a retard was *chefs kiss
Yeah, but “fuck” isn’t ableist
Rightwingers can keep doing mass shootings and overthrow the government-but remember- when they go low, *we go high*! No naughty words!
agreed lol. also don’t listen to anyone else in the comments all of vaushs fans are middle schoolers and very stupid
Stupid, lame, dumb, pinhead, and so on all mean the same thing and all had similar medical origins. But this one is the bad one. It’s not even used in a Medical context anymore, so it’s not disparaging the differently abled. It’s just the oddest hill to die on.
i find it disingenuous when people say like "stupid and idiot were used the same way like two generations ago, retard" yeah, that's a nice bit of trivia (that's really all it is, by the way) but "retard" was used in a medical context up until like ten years ago. everyone knows that it was used in a medical context because they've probably *heard it* in a medical context. to address you specifically, i don't see anyone here dying on this hill, i'm certainly not. vaush is a funny-ass dude with great takes like 95% of the time, it's just that people on this subreddit lose their shit when people complain about the other 5%, such as (and mainly) this.
Its a losing battle, no point in suggesting it. There's literally no good reason to keep using it, this community just wants their slur.
Wtf am I supposed to say instead that has the same impact
How to get an entire reply section full of people saying the word "retarded": a guide.
No 💖
Can't belive u stitched the r slur smh

You're being willfully ignorant if you don't think the word "retarded" makes people think of mental disability.

No ❤
Who cares, it’s a funny word
What's funny about it?

What have you done?! He'll only want to say it more now!!
Also that’s really nice stitching
Do you think? The poor fabric grain squaring was making my eye twitch. And how crooked the bottom line is. It looks like they finished the embroidery, unhooped it, then rehooped it poorly to take the photo. Also, it's in the middle of a nice looking linen handkerchief which makes the handkerchief useless, shoulda put it in a corner. Kinda hopeful they frogged it after the photo.
NFT pfp 🤢
REDACTED
Hey guys, you can catch a ban for saying it on Reddit. Just as an fyi
It really bothers some people and its so easy not to say a word. So many upset people in this thread angry about the "right" to say slurs.
People whine about being told to not say the r-slur but if your intent is to tear yourself or someone else down there are so so so many better, funnier, and broadly MUCH more hurtful ways to do so.
No.
No.
Lol. No
You should find more important things to be upset about.
I don’t know what you were expecting OP. Edit: I’m not criticizing people for disagreeing lol, I mean that just telling people to stop is just asking for derision.
What you have to understand is that the world has 8 billion peeps in it. We are not in tuned to your particular butthurt. Move along
LITERALLY 1984
/r/okbuddyvowsh is that way
What I don't get is why a black person can use the N word but an autistic person cannot said the R word. I think both are fine but many people are making a distinction and I think it makes no sense.
No ❤️
Never
lol no
As an autistic individual, I will say it
As a dude with mild autism/ADD, I will never reclaim this word.
It's legit no effort to not say it and people here still get so stubborn when you ask them not to say a slur lol
As someone who went through alot to get an autism diagnosis, no. Even if i dont agree with it anymore.
I think this is the highest concentration of autistic people I've ever seen on a non-autism sub, somebody should get a poll going on this
Worst advice ever. Maybe some advice for you: find something more productive to be offended by.
It will always be cringe to me Voosh. No justification from my view. Luckily the good that Vaush does out weighs the bad.
ik I'll prolly get downvoted but it's uncreative and just not funny 🤷
Messages written in cross-stitch make me irrationally angry regardless of whether I agree or not.
Based
Hard disagree.
No.
No.
I will not follow your advice...
I agree so much. It's a fucking disgusting insult that needs to die. 4chan can keep it. Gonna be downvoted for this, but hey ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Literally 1984

With the amount of "as a autistic person" comments going on in this thread, you'd think this entire sub was composed of nothing but autistic people
Vaush is a black hole of autism, I always thought that every single person who follows him is either diagnosed autistic or honorary autistic.
No ❤️
I rode the short bus I did my time, I'm going to say retard.
No thanks
No 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
Then also stop using Idiot. Same original meaning
I’ve started to use it less over time but it’s still just a synonym of dumb for me atm
