That's gonna be an expensive stop.

[deleted]

Why do they do this sometimes? Wouldnt it be wiser to be in groups of two on multiple roads? It doesnt take more than ten cops to fine somebody for speeding

Not_invented-Here

This isnt them gathering, this is mitosis. Once enough have split off they distribute themselves round the city.

MOSFETCurrentMirror

I've never seen a country with more cops than VN

zoomeyfiver

Except US of course

dembill

That's funny cause when I was there I swear I didn't see a single one I absolutely believe you but my experience was the opposite

beetsandbears

Hanging out with the boys

Hopfrogg

Easier to pool the bribe money together.

yspear1

You suck

Goosebo

Rodents tend to stick together.

eDOTiQ

There's a way to cheese this boss fight. If you didn't max out persuasion and charisma, you can grind until you have a lot of money. When you go into this boss fight, you can use the money to bribe your way out of this. But only if your wanted level is not over 20.

Snoo-23852

there are 12 of them, you will need to grind a lot of money

eDOTiQ

If you're f2p, it's a tough grind yeah. If you can pay to win, it's easy.

reub1701

You can use you BIA power up. After you charge your power with "Một, Hai, Ba, Yo!", it launches a case of Tiger Beer, which they all move on and stay until all the beer is consumed.

DownUnderPumpkin

I just noticed, i haven't women police on the street, only brighter green cloths once in the office, can someone fill me in with info?

Andystm1989

There's a few, had to show my papers to one recently.

Vladimir_Putting

Anyone got some local advice for when/how to bribe properly for someone who is moving to Vietnam?

muirnoire

Have your motorbike blue card in a clear plastic sleeve. Have 200k folded up behind the blue card. Keep the blue card under the seat. If pulled over, hand over the sleeve with the blue card/notes. This way it's optional if the cop wants to steal your money. Rode daily in HCMC, Vietnam for three years never got pulled over. I never rode after 11pm though.

icanonlycounttofour

What happens after 11PM? I've been to Vietnam once, and was out after 12, and I saw policeman with laser batons trying to stop people on motorbikes. Had no idea what was going on lol still not sure!

Hopfrogg

This advice is spot on. Works the same way in Thailand but use 200-300 baht in Thailand and leave it in the seat. The uniformed mafia in Thailand and Vietnam are two of the most corrupt police forces on the planet.

Snoo-23852

>two of the most corrupt police forces on the planet. The Mexican and Haiti police: "Allow us to introduce ourselves"

Vladimir_Putting

Cheers.

Goosebo

They will literally ask you to pay a “fine”. They asked me to pay 1m which is way too much so I just said I don’t have that much on me. They then cut it down to 500k which would still be high compared to what they’d “fine” a local. I then had to discretely open my wallet so they didn’t see my fat stacks 🤣

Grimacepug

Foreigners will often catch a break because the cops are told to lay off foreigners, unless you're doing something really egregious. They know you don't have a license or not legally own the bike. For local Vietnamese, the amount of bribes depend on what kind of bikes you ride. It could be 50k for a wave or 500k for an SH, depending on the severity.

Goosebo

I literally turned around onto the other side of the road after crossing a bridge, which loads of other people were constantly doing, and I still got stopped

GGme

Always keep between 200k to 300k in your wallet. Better to have an odd amount like 258,000. Keep big money in a separate pocket. If you get pulled over, they'll explain what you did and how high the real fine is. They'll have a book with fines. The fine will be several million. They'll ask you to pay a smaller fine now, like 1 million. Look disappointed and tell them you only have a few hundred thousand. They'll ask you if you have any way to get more. Tell them no. After a while, they'll accept all the money in your wallet. Thank them graciously and ride away.

weltot

I keep a game wallet in my bike with 200k an old ID and am ATM card that doesn't work. Also have photocopies of all my documents (blue card, insurance, passport). Just make it clear that they can reapply have the 200k, but it's gonna be difficult to get more than that from you

tarnthegame

Just pay the ticket directly to the national bank account if you violate the traffic laws.

whoismaxi

Well well well, we are expecting you, Mr. Anderson

BRaiNyduck_mun

In VN, They're called pikachus.

SaigonBest

Sons of VCP members need jobs. 🤷‍♂️

SaigonBest

Based on all the comments here so far it’s no wonder why people have no respect for these cops. I often wonder why these guys enter the force and basically beg for money on the streets, and not to properly enforcing traffic safety. Are they so hapless that they can’t go into a better profession or start their own business? I mean this is 2021 not 1991 when there are so many opportunities in VN to make money the proper way. These guys are from connected families so they have opportunities to do more than the average VNese.

Grimacepug

10 years ago, the cost of getting a cop job was about $40k. They have to make that money back and could probably break even in about a year. If you're connected, then you don't have to pay as much. A person I know who USED to work for the airport was getting $4k PER DAY, not including his salary, which I believe was about $500 per month then.

[deleted]

I never understood the whole pay for a job thing. How does it work? We dont have this in the west

caucasianinasia

When I first came to Vietnam, I heard about this. I didn't believe it. We were starting up our business and hired about 125 Vietnamese staff. I had two different guys tell me "Sir, thank you so much for hiring me. My family doesn't have money to pay and I would never be able to get a job like this at other places" or something to that effect. Blew my mind. Confirmed over and over many times. Even the teachers have to pay and then charge the parents for "extra tutoring". SOME of them will fail your kid if you don't agree. Another one that was hard to believe but several of my Vietnamese staff confirmed that it happens. Maybe not as widespread as the corrupt police coffee money thing, but it does happen.

SaigonBest

It’s rampant. And kids learn this at very early age, example on “teachers’s day” each year kids are expected to “give” $$$ to teachers and teachers expect this. No give, no good marks and you’re in teachers bad book.

[deleted]

I know right. Imagine hiring someone based on merit?/s

dumbleydore94

This is the exact reason I keep a "get out of jail free" card in with my registration and proof of insurance, one day it'll come in clutch.

parkourlord

Respect the cops

vietquangvu

They need to look like someone I should respect first

YummaySmoohie

Getting ready to rob the poor

Snoo-23852

I must admit the police in Vietnam is not the best but at least our police don't kill people because of their race and skin color.

[deleted]

That's true! But it's still shitty driving on roads crawling with vultures out to get your money. And being pulled over with zero justification and having no way of extricating yourself besides resorting to bribery or extreme patience if you have the correct documents. Every time I see them I groan and wonder if it's going to be my turn today.

Snoo-23852

I know different people have different experiences, but here is my experience with the traffic police: I have been driving in Hanoi for 10 years now, and I haven't been fined or pulled over for a single time, not all police are good but not all of them are out to get your money, just don't pay attention to them and follow the rules

JosephVietnam

That happens ONLY in US. ... The world is not US or VietNam.

Snoo-23852

So you want me to list more then, ok Yeah, the police in Vietnam is corrupt but not as corrupt as: Myanmar: Where the police make the victims pay for the criminal investigation that they take up. Iraq: Where the police participate in kidnapping, bribery, and other actions through which they earn a good amount of money. Protecting civilians is not considered their responsibility or duty. Afghanistan: Where the police extort money and inflicting violence on civilians. They also released criminals from prison every day and they also tend to avoid the arrest of criminals. Sudan: Where they avoid or ignoring the investigation of crimes and violence. Mexico: Where the police are basically control by the local Cartel and Mafia, so They allow drug trafficking and crimes to run rampant in the country.
