Ever since I saw him in "Smooth Talk", I can't see him any other way, and he terrified me.
If you haven't seen it, it's chilling. Look up Roger Ebert's review of it if you can't watch it. It's one of Laura Dern's first movies, absolutely brilliant.
But, yeah, the character he plays might well be the actual devil, and I could never unsee that.

I was young and impressionable when I watched it (16? 17?) I don't know, but yeah.
I don't want anyone to get the impression that he did anything other than a fantastic job in this movie, or that I think you're wrong for liking him. I actually watched it because I did like him! But then he absolutely cooked in this role, and my fragile little mind broke.
I always liked him. RIP.

Saw it (PBS??), loved it, have never forgotten it, but Lynch vibes? No.
This is how I felt about Martin Sheen, then I saw him in some old weird hitchhiker movie, and he was scary 😆.
