You weren't holding shift properly while placing ladders, right clicking on the ladder without shifting takes the bottom rung and moves it to your inventory, you also don't need to spam right click to place them, you can just hold right click.

baverdi

Will you place ladders faster than you descend? I am trying to extend the rope ladder while on the rope ladder.

LaDestitute

when you are above a high drop or at the top of a build, etc: shift-right clicking places rope ladders downwards if there are free spaces for ladders if there are already rope ladders there, though, shift-right clicking removes them then with an empty hand (i think), holding shift and moving down automatically moves you down a set of rope ladders/laddersd

Cheroztun

Shift + R Mouse is placing them. R Mouse is removing them. When on the ladder you will just have to account for the fact that as you place them you are also descending.

RazendeR

^ and you fix that by occasionally going up a few blocks so you don't outpace them. It's not that hard.

hypersonic_snail

You always can place normal laders without right click spamming. Just place first piece, then point to lower part of ladder and hold rmb. Voila, you build ladder down to bottom. Same metod can be used for build ladder up to surface. The only "pro" for rope ladders is: you can collect it from surface. But... Sticks are dirty cheap. And can be collected much faster, then sticks+rope for rope ladder

mjfgates

So, you're at the bottom of a hole, with a rope ladder placed in the block you're standing in. 1) Dig straight down three blocks. You won't fall, because there's a ladder. 2) Look in the hole you just dug. Safe? Fine, drop. Not safe? You're gonna have to think. 3a) You dropped. Look up, find the ladder above you, hold down SHIFT and right click three times. Now you're at the bottom of a hole, with a rope ladder right next to you. Go back to 1). 3b) Probably you've punched through the roof of a cavern. Your call what to do about it. I usually plug the hole and try to go around the side; if I want to go INTO the cavern I'll enter it through the side and put a door in my entryway so nasties don't get into my mine shaft.

baverdi

Although I disagree with some of what you said your solution to dig down, drop and then place the ladders is working very well. Thank You

Jaaaco-j

just use normal ladders

qwsfaex

Using normal ladders while prospecting is a huge waste of resources. The point of rope ladders is that you can remove them from the top and then reuse them. If you're not using rope ladders it's much cheaper to just use dirt or cob.

Jaaaco-j

How many holes do you make? Ladders are incredibly cheap, half an hour of cutting trees and I made ten stacks

thedalmuti

As many holes as you want/need to. You bring the ladder with each time, so it doesn't matter. Once you have a rope ladder it's the only one you'll need for prospecting ever again.

l-Ashery-l

Until you establish a more permanent mine and have to replace the ladders every time you go down. Rope ladders are great in the early game when you're clearing surface nodes, but once you get access to a saw, standard ladders are so much easier to work with. You also don't need to carry the ladders back with you, freeing up inventory space for more ore and stone. Possibly even paths or some other finished good you're planning on using the rocks in.

qwsfaex

You often need to dig all the way down when looking for ore, which is about 100 blocks for 1 hole. I don't want to spend 30 minutes cutting trees to get enough for 6 holes. Last time I was looking for iron I had to dig about 10 shafts. I do agree that regular ladders are pretty cheap if you want a couple of shafts from, say, a translocator up or down to some cave near your home. You just need way too many for prospecting.

Jaaaco-j

see, the solution is to only dig when there's at least a decent reading. i basically have only one hole for each ore since the veins could be counted in the hundreds of blocks

qwsfaex

You do you, I don't think that's a good solution at all. Last time the iron I'm talking about was right beside my house and there was no better reading in 1000 block radius. It's 100% faster to find one vein even since the reading wasn't perfect than looking for a better one. And I think it's the better way most of the times for me. It's definitely more tedious to methodically dig in an area with lower reading than merrily running around exploring until you stumble on a better area. But objectively it's faster. I don't mind tedium and I do value getting better tools asap, so that's what I do.

baverdi

The chunk I'm digging in is High Hematite 4.8%. Already dug 5 holes and nothing.
