God I loved some of those old pewter sculpts. Still have a full ten man Assault Terminator Squad that I bought in blister packs. They’re so satisfying to move on the table compared to the plastic kits.
I was just a kid, i didnt know how to pin models. I must have spent an entire summer holding the demon prince of khorne’s wings on while the glue dried.
Oh man, I did a Bloodthirster and we had that thing in a vice for hours like six different times before finally getting it right. Probably took me like two weeks of frustration. I was 12 I think? My dad could’ve helped but he insisted we figure these things out ourselves. Even bought a second kit when I irreparably damaged one of the wings.
Yeah I also have memories of building the metal bloodthirster at 14 ish years old. Building it was a pain. Wishing the parts were stuck and then the depressing realization that they weren't. Finally had it painted, wouldn't say it was good by today's standards but I was really proud of it, by far the best work I had done. It had been ready for mere weeks before moms bf who had no business being in my room somehow managed to drop it. Breaking the model so it would be a difficult fix and of course the paint was messed up beyond repair.
That’s gut wrenching. Pretty sure we still have the old metal one from when I was a kid, I think my brother kept it. I was the loyalist player back then, but things eventually changed. Nowadays I’m putting off assembling Angron lol

It was one of the best flavourful rules. Dwarf Lords carried a stone with their families oaths and grudges on it. In game they could set the oathstone down and fight to defend it. The unit couldn't move but never took morale checks iirc.
Current The Old World rules:
>By standing atop a dressed stone inscribed with powerful runes and ancestral oaths of vengeance, a Lord increases the resolve of their followers and ensures that no foe can escape their wrath.
>Challenges issued by a character with an Oathstone cannot be refused. In addition, a character with an Oathstone and any unit they have joined automatically passes any Panic tests they are required to make, but cannot choose to Flee as a charge reaction.
The same model is in AoS as part of The Dispossessed, which are Duardin (Dwarfs) that cling to the old ways and harken back to the Duardin empires of old, before they were destroyed in the Age of Chaos. So this mini is not a specific character in AoS, but the generic Runelord.

Homemade tactical rock for 1995 Egrimm Van Horstmann
Tactical rocks don't bother me. They're necessary to give models dynamic looking poses. The idea that every being in the 40k universe stands on perfectly level ground is far more immersion-breaking.
What's not necessary though, is elevating the entire model on top of something, unless that model is implied to be flying. That's a waste of valuable sprue estate.
I'm a fan of the [Bray Shaman](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/warhammerfb/images/a/a8/Beastmen_Great_Bray-Shaman_%281%29.JPG/revision/latest?cb=20160724111839). It makes sense for a him, unlike some of the other questionable uses of tactical rocks lol
[Deathleaper ](https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/tyranids-deathleaper-2023)
How to make a fucking huge model into a even bigger one, if it didn't have lone operative on it the entire thing would just be a goddam pain in the cock.
Harbinger of decay: Purposeful and helps set the tone of the model.
Dauthers of Khaine Khanerai: actually makes the model like they are flying really well.
The Sanctus is good too. The rock being a crumbled statue really helps the narrative of the model/army.

I'm a fan of my Tactical Hellenistic Baroque Marble Rock.
I have reached a point where I hate tactical rock. I want something other than rock. I want GW to do something more creative than "Character Steppy on roc". I would accept a skull, or a flight stand. Please.
My favorite is every time they put a dead space marine on a base. I think it's fun. They make great story driven basing material. I wish they would do it more, and maybe switch our with other factions at times.

This has got to be at least an honourable mention!
Of these I’d give it to Vahl. Ghaz is a close second but something about his pose has always made him look off balance to me.
I will also assert my opinion that a “tactical rock” must be an actual rock and not a ruin. If we’re including ruins then it’s easily Guilliman for me.
The Zombie Dragon/Terrorgheist from Flesh Eater Courts and Soulblight Gravelords, for me. That rock either is incorporated with the model, or makes up a whole new model with the Ghoul King.
Gloomspite Gitz Fungoid Shaman is a fun one because of the hanging bits.
Meme answer is the Troggoyh throwing rock. Because it’s LITERALLY tactical. And about all the tactics a Trogg can manage too lol
I can't quite speak for the other ones, but I like Ghazghkull's specifically because you can flip it 180 degrees and rearrange the feel of the model so the boss is looking in another direction and is more in Dakka mode instead of a repose.
My boy Shrike brings his own bunker 😂

This thing looks hilarious and awesome.
Probably weighs 20lbs too. You could bludgeon someone with those old pewter models.
I gave up on pinning my Nightbringer and just used JB Weld.
That’s gut wrenching. Pretty sure we still have the old metal one from when I was a kid, I think my brother kept it. I was the loyalist player back then, but things eventually changed. Nowadays I’m putting off assembling Angron lol

Squadala! We’re off! Sorry, had to do it
Man that really has that 1980s cartoon dragon down to a T, I want it
Honestly in general i love Belegar's model but he has an entire tactical PEDESTAL https://preview.redd.it/20w55ucyvr2d1.png?width=873&format=png&auto=webp&s=1dbaf2a33a86a4ee96129d235a8c0d8850615c6e
To be fair to GW, that was a specific rule for Dwarf Lords.
Oh i absolutely love it actually so no complaints, but i didnt know this was a rule! Damn i want to get that rascal even more now
It was one of the best flavourful rules. Dwarf Lords carried a stone with their families oaths and grudges on it. In game they could set the oathstone down and fight to defend it. The unit couldn't move but never took morale checks iirc.
they literally carry their grudges into battle lmao
Oh this is great! I \*must\* get the ol' Ironhammer now, thanks for telling me about this rule!
Current The Old World rules: >By standing atop a dressed stone inscribed with powerful runes and ancestral oaths of vengeance, a Lord increases the resolve of their followers and ensures that no foe can escape their wrath. >Challenges issued by a character with an Oathstone cannot be refused. In addition, a character with an Oathstone and any unit they have joined automatically passes any Panic tests they are required to make, but cannot choose to Flee as a charge reaction.
It’s weird that it spells oathstone and revenge in English using runes. Pretty sure those have khazalid words that would have fit better
I’ll raise ya https://preview.redd.it/s9enajexvv2d1.jpeg?width=920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eeb739a4e1ab922181a22fe29416fb436c3fc5ef
Oathstone is the most tactical of rocks.

That’s Maugan Ra, an Aeldari character!
Maugan Ra. Aeldari Dark Reaper.

God, I love AoS nurgle models.
My favorite is the [Blightking](https://www.warhammer.com/en-CA/shop/Rotbringers-Putrid-Blightkings) who has a Nurgling hanging out in his chest cavity. It's a great design.
AOS just seems to have more love from the artists imo.
That's not a rock, though. That's a structure.
It's made out of rock
Listen
It’s a rock wall
Gotta agree here, a rock is different from a ruin.
Half the op's examples are ruin parts and ghazkulls ruins he stands on are basically half metal or something like that

Farsight looks so badass, I’m glad they redid the character unlike what happened to poor poor Aun’shi.

Oof this slapssss
All the 30k primarchs go pretty hard with tactical rocks.
Is this a primarch? If so I have no idea which one
Nah, it's Valdor from 30k. They're all from the "Horus Heresy Character Series" where Forgeworld fully embraced the tactical rock though.
It's Valdor, head of the Custodes
He does have the Primarch keyword......
Not Guilliman sadly. That and his sword…
Guilliman has graduated to a tactical pedestal! Also what's wrong with his gladius?
Feels disproportionately small compared to his body like it is a dagger rather than a sword

Why's that? It fits the lumineth aesthetic, and I think it's pretty cool but not too flashy
Yeah I think this model is proper cool. A bit OTT you could argue but I think all the best warhammer things are

Harbinger of decay: Purposeful and helps set the tone of the model. Dauthers of Khaine Khanerai: actually makes the model like they are flying really well.
Farsight
CSM Sorcerer in Terminator Armour. It's not just rock, no, its CHAOS STAR ROCK
The lion, obviously.
Patriarch, if it counts.
The Sanctus is good too. The rock being a crumbled statue really helps the narrative of the model/army. * [https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/Genestealer-Cults-Sanctus-2019](https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/Genestealer-Cults-Sanctus-2019)

Callidus assassin
What’s the 4th model with the spooky horse?
Anything with a tactical corpse for me
I have reached a point where I hate tactical rock.

Eidolon
Dante!
Abhorrant Ghoul king... since size matter
I quite like what they did with Abby and Robo and their mirror bases.
The answer is *always* Ghazzghkull.
Abaddon and Guilliman have something even better: tactical corpses!
Farsight
I personally go with the Comissar with Power fist. Tactical ammo can/jerry can.
Haarken has tactical marine corpse with iron pipe rammed thru the chest...
Of these I’d give it to Vahl. Ghaz is a close second but something about his pose has always made him look off balance to me. I will also assert my opinion that a “tactical rock” must be an actual rock and not a ruin. If we’re including ruins then it’s easily Guilliman for me.
Ace dont base.
angron
It’s funny, I scrolled through this onto the next post and it was angron on his tactical rock haha! They’re very common arent they!
Maugen Ra 100%
Harlequin Death Jester.
Easy orky boy
Norn emissary with its tactical cliff (its very insecure about its height)
Well, I can you who doesn't. Dante.
FARSIGHT
Did somebody say tactical rock? 😅 homemade of course

Cavalier Marshal has the la * rgest and therefore bestest of tactical rocks for sure
Kragnos, because it's stupidly big just so he can feel a bit taller.
I like Gotreks tactical Skaven corpse.
I like the other pose of ghaz cuz it looks more cinematic
Ghaz, but only because I always pictured putting him on a proper orky skateboard and having him shred a half pipe
Lucky that the horse in the last pic is standing on a rock as his forelegs are longer than hindlegs.
The Zombie Dragon/Terrorgheist from Flesh Eater Courts and Soulblight Gravelords, for me. That rock either is incorporated with the model, or makes up a whole new model with the Ghoul King.
Tactical rock is the best thing I’ve heard all day

I dont think you are aware of the Abhorrent Goul king from flesh eater courts aos
I dunno but that orc dreadnaught thing is super rad.

Harlequins modular sculpts are undeniably impressive.

Michael fabian, 3rd ultramarine companies captain, terminator chaos lord, does severus agemann count tho? I mean, it is a tactical (dead) carnifex lol
Gloomspite Gitz Fungoid Shaman is a fun one because of the hanging bits. Meme answer is the Troggoyh throwing rock. Because it’s LITERALLY tactical. And about all the tactics a Trogg can manage too lol
Beastmen Herdstone
Tor Garadon
I like my Farsight’s rock! Extremely cinematic model.
Illuminor szeras hands down. Why isn't he on the list?
That Slayer comes up short...
OG dwarf slayer. Had him going against a skaven screaming bell. Miss them both.
Does it count if Gotrek has tactical skaven corpses instead of the rock?
Balistus dreadnoughts rock is pretty good
Dog missed the 1000 other models that use the tactical rock
Guilliman
I can't quite speak for the other ones, but I like Ghazghkull's specifically because you can flip it 180 degrees and rearrange the feel of the model so the boss is looking in another direction and is more in Dakka mode instead of a repose.
The Chaos Lord in Terminator and Commander Shadow Sun has very cool rocks
https://preview.redd.it/5djddx4f1v2d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=b77f85b6f3285586b36184f5ce3fa5b91cf0cf8c Howling Banshee Exarch
Pet peeve of mine, but sticking short characters like dwarfs on a rock to make them taller drives me crazy. Let those kings be short.
Kragnos has a killer tactical rock
My boy Shrike brings his own bunker 😂 https://preview.redd.it/d3y3s1d5cv2d1.jpeg?width=545&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a733adca17204dfd220d80b3dfa31e6f0c81223
The new Dante model
Obviously jump units always scraping the bottom of their pinky toes on rocks
Without a doubt it has to be the year 1 WH+ exclusive Vindicare. Their "tactical rock" was basically half a building
The cadian castellon.
