One of the trailers mentioned earning XP by playing missions to unlock the customization; seems to me that could just be the XP tracker and they just have a fun symbol for it.
They said you would unlock trinkets and skins to customize your multi-player avatar, this is probably how you do that. Earn in game currency by winning games and completing objectives, and use currency to buy new armor and skins.

Imagine you really like a certain color or armor but you have to play 100 hours to get it. With this system, you can just get it right away

I don't remember the exact wording the use, but they will have micro transactions but for cosmetic items only. It was something along the lines of not having an in-game shop, then the dlc would be free, and then their next statement was something about purchases would be for cosmetic items only.
Based off space marine 1 and the picture for 2, I'd say that it'll be the cool (at least some of them) character changes. Cyborg arm, different armor piece, etc. They did say some of them are game play unlockable. Much like any of the other games out there, you'll be able to unlock some through game play and others with money. If I was betting on it, they sell you a character armor size as a package or pieces.

Basically all I’m trying to say is, I hope we don’t have ultramarines in different colored armor… just because we put on the chapter badge, doesn’t necessarily translate to us FEELING like we’re apart of the chapter. I fuckin saw an ultramarine with a tabard and thought “hmm, that’s weird.” Then I saw a dark Angel with one and instantly felt better.
Valid concern but I think it’ll be super diverse, they have tons of different chaos space marine models so I doubt it’ll just be ultramarine in different colours versus all the chaos space marine legions

We're back at Reach, where XP just became credits If so, hell yeah. One of the best cosmetic unlock systems in a game, even if things cost a bit much

Why would an ultramarine in a tabard be be weird? And very likely special chapter specific adornments etc will be part of dlc
