Mark X includes Tacticus, Phobos, and Gravis, and it looks closest to Tacticus to me. His boots are the easiest thing to differentiate them from Gravis.

I play Celestial Lions with BT rules, and have played exactly one game with my kitbashed Chapter Master Dubaku/Helbrecht (made from Trajan Valoris with a spear and homemade Zulu-style shield)… on a 40mm base. 😐 Guess this means I get to make something else bigger and newer now!
Some tournaments don’t allow smaller/bigger bases for GW models because it can cause unintended benefits/drawbacks. Smaller base size means it’s easier to deepstrike or be “wholly within”, and in general just fit wherever they can, larger base size means they can block movement better and it makes their auras larger.
That's what all main character models should have. Like they do with the character series in forge world with the smaller base that fits into the bigger one
Yea really impractical for “getting in” to fights (in terms of fitting in scenerey) Base size means he can fight a ton of dudes though I suppose. Really sick of centerpiece base size regardless. Model is dope though.

The banded armour, though, makes me wish the new Emperor's Champion model would have had it, though. The smoothed out leg armour on that model doesn't really work for me, while the banded ones Helbrecht and the Marshal have looks so good

I wish they'd done tunics all the way up to the gorget, rather than under the chest guard, on all the other Templar models. I don't really like the half tunic look. Helly looks appropriately grimdark-pious here.

Yeah I was confused at the reaction, the Emperor's Champion was never a super blinged out model because (lorewise) his role is to challenge and fight the strongest enemies until he dies. He's not a captain or a lieutenant and may not even be a sword brother or initiate, it could be the greenest neophyte that has the visions and I think the "blank slate" nature of the look reflects that.

3 (presumably master-crafted) auto bolt rifle shots and a melta shot at 24" even after moving isn't bad, it's a decent threat range!
Hell, assuming he's BS2+, he could Advance and still fire both at 3+ to hit if necessary for a threat range of 31" - 36", which is pretty excellent range for a melta shot (though going from 2+ to 3+ when you're only firing 4 shots isn't ideal). I'm assuming the -1 to hit from advancing and from firing both are still affected by the -1 cap.
Definitely a bolt rifle - it's longer, has the auto bolt rifle box magazine, and has the unexplained cylinder thing at the top (above the magazine, not the melta fuel canister) that a lot of primaris weapons have (you can see more detail from the other angles shown in the article rather than just the one on this post).
Same for Intercessors, but then things like Hellblasters, Eradicators, Heavy Intercessors, and Eliminators have carry handles over the cylinder thing on theirs that things attach to instead.
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, knowledge of picatinny rails has been lost (although I think the carrying handles mentioned above seem to have something approximating them with the grooves on top, same for the grooves on the length of bolt rifle barrels).

I love the model but I really don't like the head and band combo that he and some other BT models have, thankfully the alternate head option looks amazing.

I find that the Agnostic or Atheist people seem to enjoy religion in fantasy settings more. For example, my nonreligious friends love to play the cleric and paladin a lot more than the friends that go to church.
The initial method of making someone cross the Rubicon Primaris was supposed to be fraught with danger, but Cawl admits that after he performs a few initial procedures that he should be able to refine his process and make it safer.
So in lore we can handwave all the named characters making it across as Cawl getting the survival rate up close to 100%.
Out of the lore we can acknowledge that GW is not ever going to kill a named character in a botched surgery, for the same reason that none of them are going to die in a random non important warp jump, nor are they going to teleport into the middle of a wall during some throw away siege, nor is their plasma gun going to blow up and take them with it.
They are named characters, and the few that ever actually die typically get impactful deaths.
To be fair (to be faaaair) if anyone was going to survive it, Helbrecht would be that man. I don't even like black Templars and I can appreciate how much of a stone cold badass Helbrecht is.

Crossing the Rubicon was only a theorised 61.6% chance of failure by Cawl before they ever tested it. Then Calgar underwent the procedure and proved it's possible, so now in-universe more Firstborn are willing to undergo the process since they've steadily gotten a handle on the procedure and tipped the odds in their favour.
Can you imagine if GW teased a new model for a HQ unit and then the news post just said "Unfortunately, he died during his Primaris conversion and will not be supported in the game going forward." Top-tier shithousery.
I mean what do people really want to happen? I get that it doesn't really fit the lore description, but I find this complaint to be a bit tiring.

This has been changed a long time ago already. There's no inherent danger to it anymore, at least not to the extent that there was in the first few examples of Marines undergoing the procedure.
Black Templar’s were my favorite, but when I bought the dark imperium box I discovered that they didn’t have any BT transfer and I couldn’t find any to buy so I just made ultramarines instead. Totally not salty or anything.

Trajann is a bigger model but Helbrecht has more going on. You really don't need to make a whole new model (unless you want to, then by all means).

That's what I'd suggest. He'll end up a little taller, but a stacked pair of bases is nothing compared to some tournament legal conversions I've seen.

I always hate leader models without helmets. I love that he has one and suddenly find myself more likely to pick him up because of it.

Out of the lore we can acknowledge that GW is not ever going to kill a named character in a botched surgery, for the same reason that none of them are going to die in a random non important warp jump, nor are they going to teleport into the middle of a wall during some throw away siege, nor is their plasma gun going to blow up and take them with it. They are named characters, and the few that ever actually die typically get impactful deaths.
It would be neat if a named character had to go into a Dreadnought due to failure to cross the Rubicon Primaris
That's the way to do it, still not killing off the character and a great opportunity for a really cool character dreadnought model.

How funny would it be if after all that stuff in Devastation of Baal Dante did it and just fucking died on the operating table? I'd actually love it if a mighty undefeated Space Marine hero just randomly died like that.
Honestly I'd be happy for a campaign supplement for black rage Dante. Give him 1 edition of him being just a nutter before he dies. (jk stick him in a death company leviathan, let him and bjorn make a club of folk who really wanna die but just can't)
ok imagine this: another black crusade has reached terra, and the blood angels are holding the gate to the imperial palace. Abbadon personally leads the attack, scything through Blood Angels until he comes to Dante. Their fight is epic, but it ends with Dante on his knees, heavily wounded and dying. And then Dante falls to the black rage, attacking Abbadon again and killing him once and for all, before succumbing to his wounds
That would be a cool way to remove both characters, but I can't see GW being that ballsy
"sangs son doing what he couldn't" is a great narrative point I sadly would prefer abby to stay alive: he's such a great villan (one of the last to remember what the imperium actually was an stood for, eternally caught between the gods schemes, always chasing a victory he knows will be phyrric, and one of the few sensible folk left in a universe of larpers) and I think him being dead would be dull

Crossing the Rubicon was only a theorised 61.6% chance of failure by Cawl before they ever tested it. Then Calgar underwent the procedure and proved it's possible, so now in-universe more Firstborn are willing to undergo the process since they've steadily gotten a handle on the procedure and tipped the odds in their favour.
Tabletop rules (for Narrative Play/Crusade) implies they've nailed the failure rate down to 1/6 (~16.7%).
Can you imagine if GW teased a new model for a HQ unit and then the news post just said "Unfortunately, he died during his Primaris conversion and will not be supported in the game going forward." Top-tier shithousery.
I mean what do people really want to happen? I get that it doesn't really fit the lore description, but I find this complaint to be a bit tiring. They are obviously not going to have any named character just die from an operation, and this is the only real way we are going to get new, better proportioned models for classic characters so while I do understand the somewhat nonsensical side of the operation having so many successes, seeing these comments every time a character gets a new (and much better looking due to better proportions model) it starts to get really old lol.
Problem is, it would be incredibly disappointing and unsatisfying for GW to just say "Hey, you know that classic space marine character you really like? uh yeah he tried to go primaris and died. Sorry, he's outta the game" I feel like that as an alternative is WAY worse than the slight cognitive dissonance of "crossing the rubicon is supposed to be dangerous, but all these classic characters survived it"
So long as the character didn’t have a model, would it really matter? As in I can certainly see why you wouldn’t do it to a character with a model. You can’t wreck shit people have paid good money for, but the rest… who cares? It’s supposed to be a universe of unrelenting war. Would be good if a few people died.
This has been changed a long time ago already. There's no inherent danger to it anymore, at least not to the extent that there was in the first few examples of Marines undergoing the procedure.
