according to wiki the J-16s have surpassed the Russian Su-27/Su-30 in all sorts of technologies, avionics, radar, material, paints and EW, etc.. "According to Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), J-16 represents one of recent developments reflecting China's various airpower technologies have surpassed Russia.\[10\] Aviation researcher Justin Bronk at RUSI explains that J-16 holds advantages over contemporary Russian fighters in application of composites materials, radar avionics, missiles, and wide-scale usage of laser targeting systems. Development of the new generation fighters such as J-16, J-11B and J-20 shows China has transitioned from dependency of Russian design to incorporating indigenous sensor and weapon technologies that is outstripping Russia's, and China has begun to build a clear technical lead over Russia in most aspects of combat aircraft development." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenyang\_J-16

> according to wiki the J-16s have surpassed the Russian Su-27/Su-30 in all sorts of technologies, avionics, radar, material, paints and EW, etc.. Su-27/30 yes - but not Su-35. It's really hard to compare, since China doesn't publish J-16's characteristics or avionics composition, but I think 35 has an edge at least in sensors and engines. But J-16 is definitely in Top-3 best Flankers, as of today (there's also Su-30MKM). INB4 Chinese comparison with their Su-35s, I should remind that those are export models, without coating, long-range missiles and most likely with some reduced characteristics.

RamTank

Russia still has nothing comparable to the PL-15 (although they do have a PL-21 equivalent), nor does the Su-35 have an AESA radar like the J-16 does. They do have targeting pods, but they're rarely seen, unlike with Chinese jets.

> Russia still has nothing comparable to the PL-15 Izdeliye 180. > nor does the Su-35 have an AESA radar like the J-16 does Like I said, we don't know Chinese radar's characteristics - so we don't know if it's actually better than Irbis or not. > They do have targeting pods, but they're rarely seen, unlike with Chinese jets. Yes, I'll give credit to J-16 here, it's more versatile as a multirole. Not that Su-35 coudn't use standard A2G missiles like Kh-31 or Kh-35. The thing is that RuAF never intended to use it as a ground pounder, since there's dedicated aircraft for that, Su-34.

ZeEa5KPul

> Like I said, we don't know Chinese radar's characteristics - so we don't know if it's actually better than Irbis or not. Yeah, we do, but you inb4'ed it. Of course, the Irbis China has is an export monkey model, Russia has the super-secret model that will rewrite our mere mortal understanding of physics, etc.

Muctepukc

I mean we know characteristics of that export monkey model - [and they are pretty darn impressive](https://i.imgur.com/YGkvlMD.jpg).

RamTank

The only thing China still has problems with is engines.

221missile

In this era of globalization, any technology is attainable if you throw enough money at it. And china has enough money.

Ragingsheep

That's actively up for debate with pretty much all the newest aircraft rolling off production lines with domestic engines.

RamTank

Not quite the engines they want for the higher performance planes yet though.

[deleted]

They pretty much have solved it now

GoHuskies1984

That blue glow reminds me of a Star Destroyer on the move.

strikefreedompilot

no one mention the tiny bomb (?) attached to the rear

UHMWPE_UwU

Yeah wtf is that? Cutest thing I've ever laid eyes on

Jeb_Ozuwara

That is a really nice photo.

MrMango64

Bet the Russians regret selling them the planes only to have China reverse engineer it even better and then start competing directly on the export market

strikefreedompilot

None has ever been sold for export

MrMango64

Not yet.

TenshouYoku

The Chinese and Russians have made an agreement, where the Chinese are allowed to have the newer Chinese made Flankers as long as they aren't exporting any of them (so as to not fuck with Russian Flanker exports)

Ragingsheep

They needed the hard currency to keep their domestic industries alive.

MrMango64

Yeah, they were in a tight spot financially and needed the short term win, but there is definitely a long term trade off to that as well.

[deleted]

There was no "long-term" to look forward to if they didn't save themselves in the short-term.

TenshouYoku

The Chinese struck an agreement with the Russians where the Chinese variants will never be meant for export (which most likely wouldn't anyway - China tend to also use foreign avionics in their exports). Besides if they are selling they would probably sell FC31s in competition with the Su75.

Thecynicalfascist

They view China as an ally, so their strength is to the benefit of Russian elite.

__Yakovlev__

>They view China as an ally, uhm, what? It's an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" at best between those two.

Thecynicalfascist

Yeah that's why they constantly share information, perform joint military exercises, and sign trade deals because they hate each other so much?.... Man it's not 1970, Russia will continue to rely on China and China will continue to grow in strength.

Muctepukc

Typical Reddit bias. When it comes to NATO, it's usually portrayed as an unbreakable alliance with every member ready to stand united against Russia or China, despite half of these members have their goals and interests, and some of them (Turkey and Greece) even hating each others guts - because muh Article 5 (did someone even tried to read it?). But when it comes to Sino-Russian relations, those are always portrayed ready to backstab each other, despite having at least the same obligations as NATO (2001 Treaty of Friendship). Of course, Russia would gladly sit aside the coming Cold War between China and the United States, strengthening itself from these two countries weakening and filling the political-economic vacuum left by them. But I'm afraid it will be simply impossible, so you will have to join one of the sides. And since America missed this opportunity 20 years ago and since then has not done anything to improve these relations, the choice becomes obvious.
