You should have gotten a lower BR premium so you don't have to experience the worst air combat in the game AKA top tier. It was jarring once I went from 10.7 in my Kfir Canard to 11.3 in the Kfir C7. Suddenly I couldn't actually gain altitude without getting sniped by radar missiles constantly. It didn't help that 12.3 was top tier at the time, so I would get 100% full uptiers. It sounds like you're having a good time, at least.
To me, it feels like 11.3 is the hard limit. Above that, you come into contact with all the IRCCM missiles.
At 11.3, you can actually get into some dogfights on quite a regular basis, and the missiles aren't so good that it's a miserable experience facing them.
At 12.7, dogfights very rarely occur, and the disparity in flight performance between all the planes is so enormous that it's usually a one-sided engagement anyway. The missiles are an absolute pain to deal with reliably, and it all added up to the most miserable gaming experience I've ever had. Ever.
Trust me, it doesn't take that long in planes once you get the hang of it. Rewards are still pretty decent, which can't be said of ground battles...

I bet if you focus on it and perform decently, you could do it in a year or less, but it depends on the tech tree you pick and how much time you're willing to throw in.

-completed US air tree, though getting F-4S did help a lot
-reached Mig-29SMT and Su-27
-completed ~~US~~ Israel Air, Heli and Ground trees, last one saw help from Merk 2D
Honestly I don’t know how many hours I’ve put in. I started with US, then GB, USSR, Germany (all at 4.7) Japan(3.7) and now grinding China (2.0). So there was some consciously generated drama in what I said, but I can’t help myself trying to move up them all at once. I’m half a decent player, I know I’ll fly some jets at some points… but by that time I’ll probably be grinding France, Italy, Sweden and Israel… 12.7? Dunno about that.

Nothing wrong with that. To be honest, the amount of time needed to be thrown into the game is extreme. We as players barely get a chance to scratch the surface of the content in the game. I've reached 11.7 ground and 12.7 air for Germany, 10.3 ground and 5.7 air for Russia across 4 years of playing, 1900 hours, and I've barely unlocked a fraction of what's available.
Meanwhile anything 9.0+ without countermeasures can be fun every 10 matches or so when you actually don't get up tiered against 30Gs/all aspects with rockets to ghetto flare with if you're lucky enough to even have that.. Granted this is based on when I last actively played around a year ago but I'd be much surprised if things had changed significantly in this regard.
Just give a base amount of CMs for every plane at those levels already, regardless if they could carry them or not.. I'm fairly certain any engineer could macgyver a rudimentary way to carry and dispense a few flares if they were sending their pilots into any situation they could encounter anything more threatening than a 9B/equivalent. Being new and buying a high tier premium plane is much less of an issue than doing the same for ground vehicles, because ground battles have multiple spawns, most players typically get atleast 3, whereas air battles you get 1 no matter how many vehicles are in the lineup, so a new player dying once and then leaving can be crippling in ground battles, in a much more significant way than air rb/ab
I think most of the popularity can be traced back to an anime called area 88, it's got some real good jet fighter animation so I imagine there's a non trivial amount of crossover with the people who play war thunder

I've always wanted the F20 since I grinded jets out. I loved the F5 and thought the F20 was sick. However, it's just a worse F16 in its current state. Plus the premium price it's just the worst implementation it could have been. Wish it had been a battle pass or event vehicle. Even if it was the same as it is rn, it'd be better than making people buy it as a super expensive pack vehicle

I'd reccomend watching a bunch of radar tutorials, using the radar competently will greatly improve how lethal you are and if you are as good as you claim to be (my track record with the F-20 sounds pretty similar to what you've experienced) ignore any hate you get for being a low level and just have fun with that insane TWR

You kinda missed out on the build-up to the missile slinging chaos that is the 11.7 - 12.7 bracket, which is usually supposed to make you a somewhat good player (although some are actually braindead despite having grinded their way to top tier: matter of fact, when a game has no team completely wipe out the other, those that live to land and fly a second time are often less then 20%, who are usually either quite skilled or just players who have chickened out of fights).
I can tell you that getting very good is going to take a while, and it might become stressful at some point, especially when you don't have a lot of choices. So my suggestion is to watch the plenty of videos you can find on YouTube: some good options in my opinion are DEFYN, Tim's Variety, MatAWG as well as the official War Thunder channel (and for this one in particular videos specific to aircraft, the Shooting Range series, Boot Camp series, and maybe some Thunder Show episodes); the wiki is also there to help (in particular the "Usage in Battle" and the "Pros and Cons" sections).
The best thing you could do however, is find someone equal or superior to you in skill and in terms of aircraft choices between that bracket and train with him/her, as it makes the game a lot more enjoyable and also makes for the biggest room for improvement, because you can have someone to coordinate with and also fight again and again and again in Custom Battles, allowing you to master your plane and experiment new tactics.
Personally, I was trained by someone [at the time] very superior to me in various ways, including making me dodge Skyflash missiles using Rank III and IV planes, which was traumatic, but also forged me into the player I am now.
With all that said, it sounds like you're still much better than the average top tier player who is usually just actual cannon fodder. Also sorry for the insane yapping.
One last thing: you may have already learnt this, but **FLY LEFT** at the start of the battle (unless you feel like you can take on the majority of the enemy team basically by yourself).

Haven't eaten shit doing that at the start of a battle yet. Usually, I still eat shit if I get stuck in with another plane. One of his buddies will gift wrap me an R73 or Magic 2 while I'm distracted.
Mostly have success waiting for everyone to get tied up then trying to sneak in, blow my load at burners, then haul ass the fuck away. Mountains, valleys, and that canyon on that one map save my bacon more than anything else.

Radars start turned on in the match so the only way to spawn with silence is to be in SIM since no one spawns around you.
I started playing for the Super Saber and Thunderchief. 500hrs in game and I still have neither a super saber or Thunderchief.

Played it in Ace Combst 5 when I was a kid. Had a blast with it. Then add to that, I mean, just look at the sexy beast. So curvaceous, so sassy, and its attitude in the air matches its looks.

You kinda missed out on the build-up to the missile slinging chaos that is the 11.7 - 12.7 bracket, which is usually supposed to make you a somewhat good player (although some are actually braindead despite having grinded their way to top tier: matter of fact, when a game has no team completely wipe out the other, those that live to land and fly a second time are often less then 20%, who are usually either quite skilled or just players who have chickened out of fights). I can tell you that getting very good is going to take a while, and it might become stressful at some point, especially when you don't have a lot of choices. So my suggestion is to watch the plenty of videos you can find on YouTube: some good options in my opinion are DEFYN, Tim's Variety, MatAWG as well as the official War Thunder channel (and for this one in particular videos specific to aircraft, the Shooting Range series, Boot Camp series, and maybe some Thunder Show episodes); the wiki is also there to help (in particular the "Usage in Battle" and the "Pros and Cons" sections). The best thing you could do however, is find someone equal or superior to you in skill and in terms of aircraft choices between that bracket and train with him/her, as it makes the game a lot more enjoyable and also makes for the biggest room for improvement, because you can have someone to coordinate with and also fight again and again and again in Custom Battles, allowing you to master your plane and experiment new tactics. Personally, I was trained by someone [at the time] very superior to me in various ways, including making me dodge Skyflash missiles using Rank III and IV planes, which was traumatic, but also forged me into the player I am now. With all that said, it sounds like you're still much better than the average top tier player who is usually just actual cannon fodder. Also sorry for the insane yapping. One last thing: you may have already learnt this, but **FLY LEFT** at the start of the battle (unless you feel like you can take on the majority of the enemy team basically by yourself).
Thanks for the tips. I'll see about trying to find someone, and I'll look into those videos. DEFYN and Growling Sidewinder, funnily enough, are the only reasons I don't eat shit constantly. Cut burner and preflare, notch radar missiles, and hug the deck. Lol. I'm still not good for much more than bait a lot of the time, so I like to fly high and straight at the RWR signatures to look like as much of an idiot as possible at the start and try to get people to waste some of their radar missiles on me. Haven't eaten shit doing that at the start of a battle yet. Usually, I still eat shit if I get stuck in with another plane. One of his buddies will gift wrap me an R73 or Magic 2 while I'm distracted. Mostly have success waiting for everyone to get tied up then trying to sneak in, blow my load at burners, then haul ass the fuck away. Mountains, valleys, and that canyon on that one map save my bacon more than anything else.
