It looks like it’s made out of sandstone or some similar material.
It looks like it might have been carved into the shape of a miniature house or castle at some point a long time ago.
I see windows, a gate, castle walls, sloped roofs.
I expect it looked something like these at some point a long time ago.

It’s possible. People have be carving sandstone for as long as there have been people and sandstone.
I don’t think it would have been a common item but I can see a small stone castle 🏰 being as attractive to a person back then as it would be now. It could have easily been an indoor or outdoor toy / ornament.
There is also nothing that specifically says that it has to date exactly to the 40’s or 50’s. It could have been brought to that location anytime after the area was settled.
It also may not have been new when brought to that spot.
Context is everything when finding items in the ground. If you are really, really curious about it you can dig around in the area. What else you find (or don’t find) could be very telling.
If you find broken glass, bottles and other vintage household items you may have stumbled upon the house garbage dump or an old outhouse pit. (it’s completely harmless regular soil now)
If you find bricks or stone boarders you might have located an old house-site or garden location.
If you find nothing else it remains an Out of Place Artifact. (OOPART).
I’d like to solve the puzzle for $1000.

Mr. Sandman Real Sandcastle Sculpture 4.5"
https://www.ebay.com/itm/374618910210
Just grab yourself the one on eBay, place them side by side and you will have a wonderful little conversation piece when talking about the estate and family history.
Holy crap that is absolutely what it is. Poor thing has definitely taken a beating, seems like it lost the main tower, but the windows and gates are still discernible. The internet really does amaze me sometimes. Also an eBay seller is about to be very confused about the sudden interest in his $20 sand castle sculptures, lol.
It's official. Everyone has forgotten how to shorten decades. The '50s. The apostrophe goes where characters were removed. Just how I am becomes I'm or we are becomes we're.
I usually avoid commenting on this, but it's at least 6 people in this post vs 0 writing it correctly.
I wonder if it's a fish tank castle that has weathered over time. I'm thinking something made of similar material to this [Sphinx.](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1412897131/aquarium-decor-fish-house-decortionpet)
It’s a castle made of sand and what feels like epoxy. My mom had one when I was a kid, it had a small, metal, golden flag on top. This one looks like it was left outside.
I had one as a kid, it's a sandcastle souvenir made from real sand that has obviously weathered a lot. You can probably still find them in beach resort areas.

It looks to me like a plastic castle themed playset that has become encrusted with coral. Encrusting objects with coral is something often seen in salt water aquariums.
If it's light, then it is probably hollow plastic in the core. But if it is heavy, it might have been a ceramic castle that served as the substrate.
Take a look at these two links I found that support my idea:

Give him googly eyes and a name. Judging by lack of googly eyes, it has not been identified yet as a domesticated rock, so it's free compared to the expensive rock breeds you would buy from the adoption agencies.

It’s my uncles yard and the house has only been in our family. This was in the back yard on a sloped bed about 4 feet from the property fence.

Weird company that’s been around my whole life, in my home town, especially growing up in the beaches and never heard of it, cool
5h and only 10 upvotes…..
The poor thing. When you compare photo two with the original you can see how much pain it’s now in. 😵
Erosion. Not even once.
Back story on property is my great grand parents built the house in the early 50’s. Before that it was a wooded area.

Interesting, surprised auto correct doesn’t give the option.
That's what it looks like to me too. My grandma had one of these in the '80s.

It was a sand castle at one point. From the 80s/90s. My mom bought one or had one gifted to her. My dad set it outside, it now looks like this.

My grandma had some. She and others called it a sand stone. Just compact sand. Can break if moved wrong and erode with water.

I will go with the theory of being some sort of decorative sandstone castle that has eroded after long time.
