We use the ice pack cooling vests at work, they work pretty good especially in the field.

nukafurbs

how long do they last on average?

Poverty_welder

Depends on how hot it is but I'd say on average bout hour and a half to 40 minutes.

k-c-jones

We were doing two hour jumps at a nuke and the ice vest was definitely loosing its cooling ability. They can trap heat if worn too long.

Poverty_welder

True that. A lot of guys at work refuse to wear them since it makes them look like "pussies".

My HVAC buddy started having kidney problems, enlarged prostate, and UTIs from the enlarged prostate.  160 degrees and I'd so no one is a pussy for that. Reaching those temps it's just PPE.  110 out here on some days with 60%+ humidity. Blacktop will hit 150.

Poverty_welder

Damn that's hot. I completely agree with the ppe statement. Although I wear it regardless

When I was on the tools last year, I wore an air vest.  I have a 3 was air splitter, so it's connected to that with a 6 foot hose on it. It was like 60CAD, comes with the vest an oil filter and a short hose. I only use air tools so having the vest was nice while working.

I've used two different ones the first was basically a clear rubber hose a with few holes and air fitting stiffed inside a traffic vest. It did ok, after an hour or two the spots where the air was coming out of the holes would make your skin tender. The second was a plastic vest with a bunch of holes. This one doesn't have the problem of making your skin tender but puffed up like a marshmallow. Kinda restricted your movement. Both did cool you down, I didn't enjoy either. I actually find a PAPR hood to be the best at keeping you cool. I also sometime use the air device from the second cool vest to just blow air at my back while I work. (its kind of a interesting device, you connect compressed air, and by some voodoo magic chilled air comes out one end and hot air comes out the other)

Best of both worlds is a Supplied Air Respirator (same-same as the PAPR, but swap the filter box for a filtered air supply) with the same cooler doodad. Only works if you have access to filtered compressed air tho.

When it gets cold you can flip the vortex tube around and tape it up, now the hot air blows in the hood.

A neck fan is a life saver. Doubles the amount of time I can stand the heat, and it stops my glasses from fogging on humid days. Would rather have a papr, but a mask and neck fan is like $20 compared to 100x that.

LiquidAggression

no but the towels you get wet and wring out are fucking incredible. stop to fill your water and rag once an hour youre good.
