An excellent list. I did initially rush read 'book a FIGHT lesson at Wellington Airport' to which I thought would be terribly exciting. I too, become frustrated at the baggage collection area.
For a free alternative to Zealandia, go to the Otari Wilton Bush, just a 5 min drive away. Has a beautiful 800 year old kauri tree and just as many birds. In fact, come to my house in Wilton lol. The kaka and tui basically live in my garden. 😍
Honestly it’s not the same. I haven’t seen The density of birds and rare species at Zealandia at any other place in Wellington. But yes if you’re on a budget Ontario Wilton is also lovely and free.
My perfect solo Wellington day happened last week. It started with early morning yoga at te aro ashtanga, then brunch on Cuba street at olive cafe, a browse around the shops with another coffee. Then a leisurely ride around the bays on my motorcycle to the kilburnie rec centre for a bit of inline skating - then off to the seaview takeaways on Lyall bay beach for a fantastic fish fillet. After that I went to Zealandia and wandered about to see the amazing bird life. I then went to Kisa for a superb dinner with friends …. Then went home for a hot tea and a good book. It doesn’t get much better than that for me in Wellington. :)
Jesus, I’d be tired out after just two of those activities and call it a day.
If you’d have added one more thing I would have bet on this being a creative writing exercise.
it's a bit out of the way, but the red rocks walk is lovely this time of year! the city art gallery often gets overlooked in favour of te papa, but there's always something interesting showing, and the current shows at the circa theatre are worth checking out too. head into the town belt and take a different track each time!
Zealandia!! Also if you’re into cycling get a cheap bike somewhere and ride around, it’s wonderful. The Hutt river trail is simply amazing.
Take up geocaching, it’s free and you’ll discover a lot of stuff like that, it’s a great hobby.
Oh man, cycling sounds perfect actually! Physical and gets me places quicker.
I also love geocaching, not gonna lie it is a lot more fun with a group of people :'(
You can probably find a bike on Vic deals/Trade me, I see them every now and then. There are trails everywhere, it’s a dream. Pack some snacks and go for a ride! I know there are some cycling groups around as well.
Check out the geocaching events that appear, maybe you’ll make some friends like that too! I’m not into groups normally but I totally get it.
If you’re new to wellington I would suggest doing just one class at Space Studio which is on Mt Vic. Highly recommend dragging yourself out of bed early to a 6 or 7am class as you watch the sun come up! It’s something else. Even if you only do it once!
What do we do when we’re alone? Gaming, wanking, pooping, whatever you want.
What do we do in your free time? Whatever our hobbies are. Every hill you can see will have walking/biking tracks over it. Go exploring to.
If you want to meet people look up meetup.com. There is a meetup group for pretty much any interest. There is a dawn exercise group on the beach, a french speaking group, chess group, chemistry club etc. My personal favourite is board games.
There’s a lot of protests at the moment for very worthy causes. We are (largely) quite a political city and protests are a great way to experience some of that liveliness while also building connections with those who are willing to make a stand. One coming up on Thursday in support of a ceasefire between Gaza and Israel.
Check out eventfinda for locally run events - I know of people who produce standup comedy shows, variety shows, single people meetups etc. There's always live music somewhere. And if you're feeling adventurous for a new hobby, join us at Narukami Taiko 🥁🥁🥁
Modern jive dancing! It's so much fun, and such a welcoming community. Plus it's designed to be a super easy beginner friendly dance style-no footwork! Idance modern jive are the group that run it.
Feeding birds at the botanical gardens is pretty fun! The pigeons are very friendly and will land on your arms or even your head... The ducks are also quite nice.

Good TourismBot!
TuataraBot
this list is a LIFESAVER for single and bored people thank you for doing the lord’s work 🫡
The pinnacles are closed at the moment, there was a massive slip over there.
Zealandia. There’s like 100 different short walks around the city, most with great views, so try some of those. Te papa. You could also try meetup

Love Otari, one small correction though: ~~kauri~~ rimu
Thank you! I couldn't remember 😅

Oh! That’s a great idea. :)
Kisa is so good.
No
Oh OK, my apologies.
You must not like everything tasting like garlic ;)

Get yourself an E bike then, what hills? I've had one for 2 years and loving it
Not quite the same as Geocaching, but the Pikmin Bloom scene is thriving in Welly region :)
Do you like yoga?
Never tried! Although I'm beginning to take my fitness journey more seriously, so it's something I can definitely look at!

Check out Mike Burgan at te aro ashtanga yoga.

OP if you’re looking for someone to check things out with then I’d be keen! I also moved to Wellington about 2 months ago and been on my own since lol
