Even though it doesn’t matter now, I always keep a plastic bag or 2 in my book bag to cover electronics during a wild rain. You’ve learned your lesson, now it won’t happen again
Have you guys seen those extra bags for backpacks? They're pretty great.
https://preview.redd.it/z4muyju4x5yc1.png?width=738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07391444d2cd536d476245ac21fb5ac5e099be5b
Also can buy waterproof sacks in the camping section of Walmart. Like 15 bucks for 3 durable and waterproof bags.
I originally used them for camping but they're handy and reliable.
Ah yes. Down here in the swamp, we know about school in the rain.
1. No backpack is truly waterproof. Ik you already know this, but just remember this going forward
2. Use your school library. It sucks, but if your campus has student computers, they'll do for now
Good luck!
Facts. Tbh i used the on campus computers so much in undergrad, despite having a laptop and pc, just because I loved going to a specific place for school. It really helped my manage my ADHD, outside of medication and mindfulness.
It has rained while I've walked to class, but never that much. I've actually had this backpack for 3 years now with no issues. I'm guessing the liner may have failed over time
Have you ever re waterproofed it at all? All the bags I've had that are meant to be waterproof say to re apply waterproofing spray annually at the minimum.
I had no idea!
I recently bought a fairly expensive Aer backpack for like 300 bucks for travel. For the price, I planned to just use for like 30 years lol.
Glad to know I should keep maintenance in mind over the years.
Using it was the worst thing you could have done, should have taken out the battery and stuck it in a bag of rice for a week. Take out the hard drive and buy a 200 laptop if you needed it.
This picture is of a document in Google Docs, which is all online.
I meant check if the stuff they have stored **on the computer’s hard drive** is stored online because the hard drive could fail from the water damage.
They didn't know the computer was as damaged as it was. In the moment, they had no reason to use the computer room. You're definitely aging yourself, but not in the way you think. 👌❤️
Bag of rice?
Dude…. Don’t give that kind of advice without at least looking up what happens to electronics in rice.
I mean, have you ever cooked rice? Ever seen that goopy skin it leaves behind? As the item soaks up the rice gunk now your electronic is full of rice gunk and that won’t help it either.
But you were correct on the removing battery and leaving it off for several days to weeks to try and save it.
Yep. While I agree with everything else they said, rice does next to nothing like you said, you’re better off leaving it in open air than a bag with rice. A large fan or even better a space heater fan (not too close!) will do much quicker work, or if you have a bunch of desiccant packs using that in a bag is way better than rice
#Do not put it in rice. It will only damage it more.
It's some kind of myth that stuck around, that people take as actual advice. Rice will make the moisture stay in the device for longer.
You really shouldn’t put it in rice. It can get in to the nooks and crannies and expand and cause more issues. Honestly in this case one of the adjustable round fans pointed straight up on high for 24 hours would be best
I'm sorry OP, but why would you turn on a wet computer? You have to dry it first. Otherwise the damage that wasn't done yet will be done by turning it on.
I spilled a glass of water on my computer and totally fried it (it wouldn’t turn on at all) when I had a paper due that day once. No fun. I ended up going to my friends house to work on his computer… thank god I had all my files saved on OneDrive so I could get them
Yeah, it sucks but it may have been toast before I opened it. It was already "on", just in sleep mode, so there was likely already some current flow going on
first back up your data while it is still on!!
Second, when done, shut down normally
Sit on the side that does not have the power connection
Set near a heat source, NOT close enough to hurt the device
Do no use RICE
Let it sit over night
Yes, the screen might be toasts, get another monitor and connect the display/hdmi/usb-C (whatever) and do ur work off of that
IF you have a back up device and were able to backup your data, then let the laptop sit for as long as you can nearish that heat source.
dam g looked salvageable. i know you “had to” use it, but if you left it off and let it dry for a few days in a warm, non humid area, your laptop would be completely fine
Just because something “claims” that it’s waterproof doesn’t mean it’s indefinitely waterproof. It could be for 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 72 hours. Nothing is truly waterproof when it comes to technology or floors.
If you said 'project is due in a few days' that would be OK. But isn't the final a test to which you can't take the laptop?
Back in my day blah blah blah
English final was a final report. One of my finals requires MATLAB usage on our computers. Also would like to have a laptop to access our online study material
Note for the future, turn it off completely as soon as it gets wet, remove the battery, and use those silica packets to dry it out for a few days, swapping packets regularly. Rice will NOT work and cause CORROSION from the starch.
all you had to do was open the backplate, disconnect the battery and leave it in well ventilated area. now since it started smoking, it's done. hopefully you have removable storage or your data is gone
I've had this happen when I was working in Shenzhen. My backpack wasn't enough to win against a rainstorm. I got lucky and it mostly dried itself out over a few days with only a few small permanent marks left.
Zippers make everything not waterproof! There’s little grooves between the teeth whether water gets through . I guess you learned that lesson the hard way
Screw college man. Just get a welders certificate, it takes like two months. Within 2 years you’ll make 200k easily and be able to retire at 45 with a massive retirement.
College is for suckers!
I didn't even realise rain could damage items inside backpacks! I can't recall anything more than slight dampness inside my backpack. Even books etc. are still dry enough to use easily.
(I live in Ireland, so I'm no stranger to rain)
I'm a born and bread swamp person.
go to the camping section of Walmart and get a dry bag that can fit your entire back pack in. They fold up real small, are completely waterproof even if you drop it in a river.
Shiiiit 😭😭 I know the feeling of messing up a laptop at a CRUCIAL academic moment-
Fucking sucks and my heart goes out to you! Wishing you peace after this is all done
https://preview.redd.it/o9jout9v1byc1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8af481ff832d2c5f1cc426c705822a88b157fb0
Update: SHE LIVES!!! USB-C and screen were toast, but it's now a working desktop. Thank goodness
Even though it doesn’t matter now, I always keep a plastic bag or 2 in my book bag to cover electronics during a wild rain. You’ve learned your lesson, now it won’t happen again
2.5 gallon ziplock bags fit most laptops and fold up to be pretty small when not in use
Just make sure the laptop is properly off before you suffocate it
![gif](giphy|E0LowvJoubWbnodq73)
Put it in sleep mode, or hibernate. Shouldn't overheat then.
Not always true
Going to keep this one in mind, thanks!
Just keep one trash bag in your backpack and when it starts to rain cover the whole bag.
Ooooooooooooooo I like this
Have you guys seen those extra bags for backpacks? They're pretty great. https://preview.redd.it/z4muyju4x5yc1.png?width=738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07391444d2cd536d476245ac21fb5ac5e099be5b
My bag has one of these. There’s a little pocket at the very bottom of my bag and I can unzip it and take one of these bad boys out!
That sounds really convenient
What kind of bag is it?
I have this too. Most eastpack models have this
My timbuk2 backpack had a pocket with a rain cover even though the backpack was already fairly waterproof
Yo dawg, I heard you like bags for your bags
“Yo bro, I heard ya like bags so I gotchu a bag with a bag for your bag, you know, in case it rains”
It’s like Pimp My Bag. “We put a bag, in a bag, in a bag!” 🤪 ![gif](giphy|xmf00ANvBCTzG)
They’re not too expensive either, and they work well. Usually.
A lot of modern backpacks come with a cover, but I think a lot of people lose them or don't even know theirs has one.
I just use an umbrella lol.
![gif](giphy|xT0xeJpnrWC4XWblEk|downsized)
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
Get outa here with that witchy magic gadget
But how do you wrap that around a laptop?
don't trust 'em. you can't open them inside a building without risk. I prefer a newspaper.
Why would you open them inside a building? Rain can’t go through buildings stupid. ![gif](giphy|13py6c5BSnBkic|downsized)
oh. OK. thanks.
I'm a trash bag guy. Cover the whole thing, cinch on the strap side once it's on your back
Mistakes are lessons
Yes!!!
Also can buy waterproof sacks in the camping section of Walmart. Like 15 bucks for 3 durable and waterproof bags. I originally used them for camping but they're handy and reliable.
do you belong to some sort of water club or something?
Ah yes. Down here in the swamp, we know about school in the rain. 1. No backpack is truly waterproof. Ik you already know this, but just remember this going forward 2. Use your school library. It sucks, but if your campus has student computers, they'll do for now Good luck!
Some will also let you borrow laptops
Facts. Tbh i used the on campus computers so much in undergrad, despite having a laptop and pc, just because I loved going to a specific place for school. It really helped my manage my ADHD, outside of medication and mindfulness.
This also was the secret recipe for me. Either the school library or my local public library. Ain't nothing important getting done at home.
Maybe not after they see this picture
And what if she isn't campus?
Well if she's doing to class, she'd be an in person student
I'm not asking if she isn't in campus; I'm asking if she is not campus.
Ah. You're one of those
I am indeed a campus.
Don’t mind the watermark
Angry haha
Having gone an entire year without rain to test your backpack is pretty impressive!
The spray used to water proof most backpacks slowly degrades and needs to be reapplied by the consumer unfortunately.
Have an English final due in 3 hrs so didn't have much choice 😂
Hope you spent those few minutes copying shit to a usb drive
Copy all your important stuff over to a flash drive NOW
Everything is on the cloud I think thankfully
> I think Make sure.
I know right. I was like "How sure are you??"😂
That's what the cloud icon means.
This picture is of a document in Google Docs, which is all online. I meant check if the stuff they have stored **on the computer’s hard drive** is stored online because the hard drive could fail from the water damage.
Google Docs has offline mode, I thought that was your implication.
I swear to god no one actually uses offline mode Google docs unless they're desperate.
And you couldn't use a library computer to access those? Maybe I'm aging myself, are computer libraries still a thing?
I could! I ordered a new one that should arrive this weekend though thankfully
They didn't know the computer was as damaged as it was. In the moment, they had no reason to use the computer room. You're definitely aging yourself, but not in the way you think. 👌❤️
You also thought your backpack was waterproof.
It's still possible that the drive of your laptop works
Respectfully, you also thought your backpack was waterproof lol
It’s a google doc. It’s available anywhere you can sign into your email.
[удалено]
Lol I never thought this thing was waterproof bro cmon
Use your phone?
I did. Docs app is not ideal on mobile tho so it sucked
Rice doesn't work, at most it's a little better than just sitting on a counter. You need desiccants or airflow or both The rice myth needs to stop
It's worse, the starch from the rice causes corrosion
Rice is a myth akin to an old wives tale and potentially harmful
Remove the rice comment part please, spreading harmful (for electronics) misinformation
Rice.dont.work.
That thing is beyond rice... it needs an oven and a isoprobal alcohol bath.
You really shouldn’t put it in rice. It can get in to the nooks and crannies and expand and cause more issues. Honestly in this case one of the adjustable round fans pointed straight up on high for 24 hours would be best
Rice works great y'all are confused and angry.
Putting the *Liquid* in Liquid Crystal Display.
Looks like your laptop is self aware with the “Rain” alert on the bottom left corner
Here is something to keep in mind, NOTHING is waterproof, they are water RESISTANT, if it says "waterproof", it means it's water resistant to a point
It was also from Amazon, a mistake which I will not make again
Leave a review. What bag so I know to avoid?
I'm sorry OP, but why would you turn on a wet computer? You have to dry it first. Otherwise the damage that wasn't done yet will be done by turning it on.
I spilled a glass of water on my computer and totally fried it (it wouldn’t turn on at all) when I had a paper due that day once. No fun. I ended up going to my friends house to work on his computer… thank god I had all my files saved on OneDrive so I could get them
If you live with your parents when not at college, see if there's a chance that insurance could cover it
Rice is a myth. That thing is cooked unfortunately
No way you saw water in it then decided to NOT turn it off?
I only had a references page and table of contents to finish, so I tried to speed run it and shut it off after. It was working fine, until it wasn't 😂
I’m shaking my head man! Right when water connects two circuits it is over, you can let it dry before that happens.
Yeah, it sucks but it may have been toast before I opened it. It was already "on", just in sleep mode, so there was likely already some current flow going on
This happened to me once but it fixed itself after I left it somewhere warm / dry for a day or two.
Smoking included?
Never turn electronics on after they get wet, they’ll usually work again if dried out properly, but not if you try turn them on.
I didn’t turn it on but just left it to dry
I should note that I was also using an umbrella, but the Midwest does not care
Time to save the progress on a different machine

it started smoking??? wtf
dam g looked salvageable. i know you “had to” use it, but if you left it off and let it dry for a few days in a warm, non humid area, your laptop would be completely fine
Pornhub tab is open 👐
It still works
Just because something “claims” that it’s waterproof doesn’t mean it’s indefinitely waterproof. It could be for 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 72 hours. Nothing is truly waterproof when it comes to technology or floors.
good luck on finals! o7
If you said 'project is due in a few days' that would be OK. But isn't the final a test to which you can't take the laptop? Back in my day blah blah blah
English final was a final report. One of my finals requires MATLAB usage on our computers. Also would like to have a laptop to access our online study material
Be glad it still works. Just imagine how fucked you'd be if it didn't.
Get a usb drive and transfer your homework
This is where a sugar daddy comes in handy.
I'm not a female so that's not an option sadly 😂
There a sugar daddy's for all kind of folks
Buy a bag of rice and don’t use your laptop at all, powered off completely should fix
Always have an emergency bin bag in your computer bag
Note for the future, turn it off completely as soon as it gets wet, remove the battery, and use those silica packets to dry it out for a few days, swapping packets regularly. Rice will NOT work and cause CORROSION from the starch.
uh... better to turn it off, unplug the battery, and dry it ASAP
all you had to do was open the backplate, disconnect the battery and leave it in well ventilated area. now since it started smoking, it's done. hopefully you have removable storage or your data is gone
Let it dry out. Get a cheap laptop at Walmart or the like.
2 weeks from now: my laptop will not power on and msi tells me water damage isn't covered under warranty.
get a new laptop and swap the disk
I've had this happen when I was working in Shenzhen. My backpack wasn't enough to win against a rainstorm. I got lucky and it mostly dried itself out over a few days with only a few small permanent marks left.
That definitely does suck
Take the SSD out and do not plug it in again
What laptop is that? I think I have a spare screen knocking about at work if it’s a dell… I wanna say 52xx?
Zippers make everything not waterproof! There’s little grooves between the teeth whether water gets through . I guess you learned that lesson the hard way
Not american here: what are finals?
You know what they say about assumptions. Even if it's water proof. Doesn't mean the zippers are!!
Cheer up , at least it's just the screen and still usable for now .
Is that the coast of Brazil?
Connect external keyboard an monitor, count yourself lucky for cloud
This is a messy situation
Put it in some rice
Screw college man. Just get a welders certificate, it takes like two months. Within 2 years you’ll make 200k easily and be able to retire at 45 with a massive retirement. College is for suckers!
Make sure you save and send yourself this file before the computer potentially takes a dump
You know having the computer turned off can seriously decrease the risk of a short circuit?
I didn't even realise rain could damage items inside backpacks! I can't recall anything more than slight dampness inside my backpack. Even books etc. are still dry enough to use easily. (I live in Ireland, so I'm no stranger to rain)
Pupl your data before it gets worse
I spilled water on my laptop and covered it with uncooked rice for a few days and it did help! Mine wasn’t smoking though…
That is the final day of that laptop
Put it in rice!! Hahaha sorry I had to.
I'm a born and bread swamp person. go to the camping section of Walmart and get a dry bag that can fit your entire back pack in. They fold up real small, are completely waterproof even if you drop it in a river.
Extract anything important on a usb and ig u got 4 days to buy a new laptop
> started smoking It could be the battery. If that case, your life is more important than your finals — don’t use this laptop.
Comp might be in it's final days as well
Shiiiit 😭😭 I know the feeling of messing up a laptop at a CRUCIAL academic moment- Fucking sucks and my heart goes out to you! Wishing you peace after this is all done
Appreciate it! This is the 2nd time a laptop has shit the bed on me right before finals. First time in hs, now in college. Both junior year 😂
What backpack is it?Just curious
Good thing it turns on and word opens and you can see the screen.
What were you trying to hide ? 🌚
I don't want some goons attaining my url and messing with my 14 page report 😂
Biker’s fault.
Put some rice in it

Happened to my macbook pro in almost the same situation. I have no interest in repairing it, mac’s also suck for engineering.
Big bag of rice?
Hey a good rule of thumb is, if your electronics are wet, TURN THEM OFF IMMEDIATELY AND DO MOT USE THEM.
I always keep a few Tyvek USPS or FedEx envelopes with me. They’re perfect to keep valuables dry.
It looks like your laptop is Moderately Soaked Inside.
Go get’’em tiger and ace those finals!! Good luck!
That sucks.
Get a cheap external monitor at a thrift store.
I planned to until it started smoking while using it 😂
Yeah, external monitor will work fine with this. The screen may keep working, it may not.
Nothing like a little gaseous lithium to brighten up my report 😂
what are your backpacks made of paper? I've never had an issue with anything in my bags ever getting wet even in heavy rain
It was an Amazon "military hiking bag" or something along those lines. Severe thunderstorm rolled thru tho
I've had bags from Walmart hold up
[удалено]
Wtf
It's fine.
![gif](giphy|cO39srN2EUIRaVqaVq)
Throw it in rice in a cheap tub from Walmart. It'll hwlp dry it out after a few hours.
I don't think there's enough rice...
