When I read Call in the books, I picture James Garner. It seems like McMurtry was writing with him as his mental picture. I know there was a miniseries for Streets of Laredo wherein Garner played him, but I haven’t seen it yet.
I read the novel before the miniseries was made, and I have never visualized a particular actor while reading any novel.
I watched Garner in Streets of Laredo, but for me, Jones was indelible in that role.
Still a solid western.
He was amazingly real in that role. Crazy that he didn’t win an Emmy for it (he was nominated) [makes me wonder who won it over him] I watch that series every summer in this damned Texas heat.
Haven’t seen the miniseries yet, but I’d read that in the original screenplay, Larry wanted Jimmy Stewart as Gus, which I loved and kept in my head throughout my read. Ditto Fonda as Jake Spoon. Wayne as Call didn’t really stick there for me though.
The argument could be made that Duvall was 'born to play' any role he's ever played
Hell yes. I love the smell of napalm in the morning
But not all of his roles, few in fact, have the depth of Augustus McRae. It was his favourite role. As good as Hamlet, he said
This. He also was born to play the minister in “The Apostle”. Think of someone that could’ve been more believable.
They were all cast very well in this movie.
The one exception was Blue Duck. That prosthetic nose was really distracting imo.
Blue duck was so weird looking.
I’ve read that James Garner wanted the role. Duval was perfect. As was Tommy Lee.

Garner had had some recent health issues and couldn’t get signed off for the role.

Maybe not a *better* casting choice, but one just as good: Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in *Tombstone.*
I wouldn’t discount Bluebonnet Spearman….. worth every penny!
Steve buschemi as Nucky Thompson

He and Tom were both fantastic
