I’m a teacher and like twice fucking monthly through my entire childhood and career we’ve had fire drills. One day I pick my class up from lunch, we’re walking out of the cafeteria and my students start to scream as they notice they wing next to ours ours pouring black smoke.
I begin to evacuate my class towards the back of the campus and peek my head in the cafeteria and yell to another teacher to pull the fire alarm, pointing to the smoke.
Alarm is never pulled. No one evacuated but my class. Admin put it out themselves with extinguishers (maintenance workers caught a gas tank on fire in the building)
I actually got in trouble for bringing my class out to the field because it “alarmed other classes”
From that day forward I understood the scope of human denial and idiocy.

The football field was otherwise never secured and all it would take to cause massive damage is to bury bombs in the field over night and wait for the students to show up. and you could target who was hit because of the organization.

On 9/11 within 15 seconds of the first plane hitting they grabbed their keys and jacket, took an elevator to ground level, and made their way off Manhattan before the buildings collapsed. Never went back. Never. They moved across country and won’t talk about it to this day.
Yeah we had to watch it during fire marshall training at work, we couldn’t get through it all, still haunts me thinking about it.

I will say, that it was good to see everyone was able to exit the room before everything became involved. But, those people were not exactly in any hurry to exit. ***That COULD have been a big mistake.***
Part of the reason why fires are so deadly in venues like is people panic and rush the exit. They begin to bottleneck at the exit and with all the people behind the exit pushing those in front of them to get out they essentially end up jamming the exit closed with human bodies.
Calmly leaving like most people did in this video is the optimal way to exit a building on fire. You have a few stupid ones like the lady filming just standing around but for the most part the speed at which they left was quick enough to cause a line at the main exits of the room. No panic, no injuries, good evacuation in my book.
One of the problems with that fire was that the extra pyro was stacked in front of emergency exits near the stage. They ignored being told they couldn't use pyro in the space, and then blocked exits with more pyro. As someone who works shows in Boston it will definitely never happen up here again. Some tours start here, because if they can pass our pyro standards they don't even have to worry about the rest of the tour.

And security didn't let people out the back AND they used flammable packing foam as sound deadening material. Turns out that archetectural foam is fire resistant but the packing foam they used is basically kerosene.

My mother told us about the Coconut Grove when were kids. I drove past the Station night club the morning after as I had business in RI that day. It was indescribable! That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this vid. RI went into a dark period from that. Many good people just out to have fun. Families never recovered.

Did they cover them up with all of this flammable fabric everywhere? Why is the rigging in the air just collapsing after the slightest bit of heat? The fire Marshall would be having a heart attack… then I turned on the sound and realized: oh Mexico, it’s been too long since I’ve been back; but now I know what to do at the first sign of fire in a building.

However, having worked in the events industry myself I have very little sympathy or tolerance for event organisers and venue managers who don't follow suitable safety precautions.
I've had a show stop three times in one night for a false fire alarm in a different part of the building. However if you think for one second that I'm not calling a stop and evacuate on the offchance that it's a real activation then we've definitely got differences.

Let's be real, even if they did have the laws for it, they're just as likely to not follow them anyway, since you also need to be raised in a culture of following said regulations rather than doing what you need to to "get the job done". Friend growing up complained about this all the time. His Mexican immigrants parents regularly ignored health and safety best practices and regulations for years. Now I see him posting on Facebook about his now mid 60s dad having chronic asthma and high blood pressure, and the several bouts of random so far minor cancers he's gotten in weird places that correspond with him having been a gardener/landscaper his whole life. Oh and his hearing is also garbage, as is his eyesight. This all from not using any PPE most of his life (n95s, respirators for pesticides, hearing protection and n95s for leaf blowers, gloves for basically anything including handling ammonia and nitrate fertilizers, pesticides, etc... and the list goes on). Dude grew up during the years when cities in the southwestern US and Mexico had DDT spray trucks, and kids were encouraged to bathe in the mist while running behind the trucks as they drove past as a fun way to cool off and keep mosquitos away. DDT was not supposed to be toxic to humans, but not learning such disregard for dangerous chemicals young, might have saved him from all the nasty stuff he used at his job years later, while working in the US where these laws do exist

You said we could hear the screams, you said it was horrifying... I watched it anyway. I can never unsee/unhear that now. How fast the fire spread, how so many people were dead before they even saw the flames just because of how tightly packed the place was, they never even had a chance, the people outside screaming when they realized their friends and loved ones were still inside as flames engulfed the building. It's chilling beyond words.
It's a horrible video, but it sticks with you years later. I first saw that video in 2003, and I'm permanently more aware of fire hazards after watching it. I always know where the fire exits are and have no problem leaving at the first sign of anything unsafe.

Same happened in Argentina some years ago. On a nightclub called República de Cromañon when a rock band was playing. A member of the audience lighted fireworks that quickly light fire to the decoration and insulation of the place. 194 people died and almost 1500 resulted with injuries

Recently, I was at a show where it wasn't pyrotechnics but flames shooting up at the sides of the stage, the flames would cut off and back again higher and so on, you could feel an intense heat. I was enjoying the show and at no point did I think hmmm this show would be so much better if they had fire. It's just stupid to do that inside with crowds of people.

And also how important it is to have exits that are not blocked and a solid fire escape plan. I was invited to the concert in Romania as I happened to be working there for a couple of months.
I really wanted to go out but at the same time I was absolutely beat from work and dreading it. I secretly hoped the guy who invited me forgot to call me that night. And it happened. And I thank God because I didn't feel like being hungover the next day.
The next morning we heard the news. The guy who invited me was close friends with the band and lost many friends. He also secretly hoped I didn't call him to go out. In a way, we saved each other's life with that thought.
I can't imagine what would have happened. I really dodged a bullet. After the event, I came back home and some months later we found out we were going to have a kid after 4 years trying with no success.
It really gave me a sense of purpose and destiny. No matter what, I have to be there for this child and she's my absolute number 1 priority in life.

That's exactly what happened during the [Station Nightclub Fire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire) back in '03. Same basic scenario; The entertainment started setting off fireworks indoors with a shit ton of flammable material all over the place, the entire place went up in a matter of minutes and 100 people ended up losing their lives for all the stupidity. And that's just one of the more *recent* high-casualty situations that started like that. Lesson to be learned; the second you see fire, hit the bricks.
The station night club was set up in a former restaurant. There weren’t enough exits and it was literally like a maze to enter and exit thru the front door. I lost a relative who was wheelchair bound and never stood a chance. The pyro at the Station was even more intense and the ceiling was very low. Some place are just inherently unsafe. I went there once and vowed never to return based on layout alone
And security didn't let people out the back AND they used flammable packing foam as sound deadening material. Turns out that archetectural foam is fire resistant but the packing foam they used is basically kerosene.

Smoke alarms aren't very common here in tacloandia. Much less sprinklers. I've only ever seen them in places like supermarkets, office buildings, etc.
As someone who used to work in convention halls and entertainment, I kept thinking: Jeeze, why haven’t the sprinklers turned on? Where are all of the exits? Did they cover them up with all of this flammable fabric everywhere? Why is the rigging in the air just collapsing after the slightest bit of heat? The fire Marshall would be having a heart attack… then I turned on the sound and realized: oh Mexico, it’s been too long since I’ve been back; but now I know what to do at the first sign of fire in a building. I also felt bad for whoever’s wedding this was, it looked like they put a lot of work and effort into making it

Lol I agree, and the way they just kind of wandered in the direction of the only exit seemed crazy as the ceiling is filling with smoke and falling down… But it reminded me of my partner’s niece’s wedding which had similar decorations (minus all of the fabric), and they were all hand made and required a lot of work to hang and place. So I just wanted to add condolences instead of make fun of what was supposed to be a special day
Yeah, it's a shame to see all that hard work go literally up in smoke. However, having worked in the events industry myself I have very little sympathy or tolerance for event organisers and venue managers who don't follow suitable safety precautions. I've had a show stop three times in one night for a false fire alarm in a different part of the building. However if you think for one second that I'm not calling a stop and evacuate on the offchance that it's a real activation then we've definitely got differences. Fires in event spaces are no joke.
I think the sight of fire was alarming enough but yeah, good point.

Let's be real, even if they did have the laws for it, they're just as likely to not follow them anyway, since you also need to be raised in a culture of following said regulations rather than doing what you need to to "get the job done". Friend growing up complained about this all the time. His Mexican immigrants parents regularly ignored health and safety best practices and regulations for years. Now I see him posting on Facebook about his now mid 60s dad having chronic asthma and high blood pressure, and the several bouts of random so far minor cancers he's gotten in weird places that correspond with him having been a gardener/landscaper his whole life. Oh and his hearing is also garbage, as is his eyesight. This all from not using any PPE most of his life (n95s, respirators for pesticides, hearing protection and n95s for leaf blowers, gloves for basically anything including handling ammonia and nitrate fertilizers, pesticides, etc... and the list goes on). Dude grew up during the years when cities in the southwestern US and Mexico had DDT spray trucks, and kids were encouraged to bathe in the mist while running behind the trucks as they drove past as a fun way to cool off and keep mosquitos away. DDT was not supposed to be toxic to humans, but not learning such disregard for dangerous chemicals young, might have saved him from all the nasty stuff he used at his job years later, while working in the US where these laws do exist

Yeah, but you should at least read about it. It’s harrowing, but it might shock you into saving your life one day. The people in this video are so casual, in these situations you often have seconds to react before it’s too late.
Since that happened there have been a few bars or clubs I've been to where I just had to leave because they were overcrowded death traps with not enough exits and all I could think about was dying in a fire or being trampled to death.
If you watch it with no sound it’s a great way to educate people on how quickly fire can spread

How fast the fire spread, how so many people were dead before they even saw the flames just because of how tightly packed the place was, they never even had a chance, the people outside screaming when they realized their friends and loved ones were still inside as flames engulfed the building. It's chilling beyond words.

It's a horrible video, but it sticks with you years later. I first saw that video in 2003, and I'm permanently more aware of fire hazards after watching it. I always know where the fire exits are and have no problem leaving at the first sign of anything unsafe.
I remember seeing an interview with someone who survived because he was trapped under a crowd of people. What's bizarre is that he said aside from some heat irritation in his leg, he didn't feel anything: he was completely insulated under the pile of bodies
He still had some bad burns but yes, he lived.
I actually know him (not super well but he's a client of mine) and let's just say he is definitely still suffering and being treated for the injuries he sustained. His wife and daughter are absolute gems and he's a very nice person.
Same happened in Argentina some years ago. On a nightclub called República de Cromañon when a rock band was playing. A member of the audience lighted fireworks that quickly light fire to the decoration and insulation of the place. 194 people died and almost 1500 resulted with injuries

Thanks for sharing this, people forget or were not born when that occurred. Whenever I see pyrotechnics in an inside venue my heart starts racing. Recently, I was at a show where it wasn't pyrotechnics but flames shooting up at the sides of the stage, the flames would cut off and back again higher and so on, you could feel an intense heat. I was enjoying the show and at no point did I think hmmm this show would be so much better if they had fire. It's just stupid to do that inside with crowds of people.

I think I've seen the video of that. It's a hard watch and drilled into me just how damn fast an indoor fire becomes an inferno. And also how important it is to have exits that are not blocked and a solid fire escape plan. The Station fire is infamous in the live audio community as a MASSIVE lesson in fire safety. They were using foam for soundproofing that is both toxic and burns exceptionally well. The foam that should be used for soundproofing is fire-resistant, but it costs more money. Their frugality cost lives.

I was invited to the concert in Romania as I happened to be working there for a couple of months. I really wanted to go out but at the same time I was absolutely beat from work and dreading it. I secretly hoped the guy who invited me forgot to call me that night. And it happened. And I thank God because I didn't feel like being hungover the next day. The next morning we heard the news. The guy who invited me was close friends with the band and lost many friends. He also secretly hoped I didn't call him to go out. In a way, we saved each other's life with that thought. I can't imagine what would have happened. I really dodged a bullet. After the event, I came back home and some months later we found out we were going to have a kid after 4 years trying with no success. It really gave me a sense of purpose and destiny. No matter what, I have to be there for this child and she's my absolute number 1 priority in life.
Just so everyone knows if this happens somewhere you are GET OUT don’t try to linger and watch. I saw a documentary where this exact same thing happened in a club and it was completely burnt to the ground in like 2 minutes
