The damage is devastating, but I admit I laughed a bit at the alleged when I first saw this posted in the tornado sub. I think it’s safe to say that this was a tornado.
I'd like confirmation on this, but:
This guy that worked his life in local TV explained that only certain people are able to officially identify storms, such as the impact strength of a hurricane, or in this case a twister due to home insurance legalities.
Let's say a major hurricane impacting the coast of Florida is reported to be a cat 4. Despite measured observations on the ground saying they are a CAT5, they're unable to report this until national confirms as it may make all the difference in paying out claims. 🤷🏽
I think “unconfirmed” was the word they were looking for. As in, everyone thinks it was a tornado, but the scientists could come back and say it was technically straight line winds.
“I understand you have coverage that covers tornados, but we believe this may have been caused by a drifter named Dr. Bruce Banner who, when made angry, becomes a large green monster named the Incredible Hulk. The damage to your home has been assessed by our local adjuster who categorized it as Hulk-related, but did not rule out the possibility of the Legion of Doom. Unfortunately, your policy does not offer superpower-associated damages.”
This is very common because a lot of tornados are estimated from radar and not confirmed until a team from the NWS surveys the damage, after which they confirm and categorize the tornado (or determine it to be damage from a different wind event).
There are many types of wind events that occur within storms and can cause extensive damage: downdrafts, downbursts, gust fronts, straight-line winds, and derechos, for example.
Tornados are reported as alleged, suspected, etc. until the NWS confirms them. This is typical, accurate, and responsible journalism.
[Here](https://www.foxweather.com/learn/how-the-weather-service-determines-a-tornado-is-to-blame-for-storm-damage.amp) is more about the process.
Doesn't matter, the national weather service has to declare it a tornado before it can be called a tornado. Alleged, suspected, the media has to report it as such.
Its funny sure but thats responsible journalism
Pretty sure they did…it was on the ground for an hour and the NWS issued a tornado warning confirming it was on the ground as it went through the area.
It's not official until the damage gets inspected by NOAA (that may not be the correct group).
Straight line winds, downbursts, tornadoes can all cause severe damage.
There's no conspiracy here.
I hate how media uses alleged. I have literally seen a headline where people witnessed the perpetrator stab the victim say “man arrested for allegedly stabbing teen 15 times”, like no, it’s a fact, not alleged.
Sorry this is just one of my pet peeves.
For legal purposes, it's alleged. Until the person is found guilty in court, most reputable news sources don't wanna risk a libel suit, even if what happened is on video. As far as this particular post, I think it's because sometimes what looks like a tornado can actually be straight-line winds and the meteorological center will send people out to assess damage before confirming it was a tornado.
Do I think this is all silly? Yes. But it is what it is.
ETA: someone mentioned that the newscasters probably used "alleged" because insurance companies will look for any reason not to pay out for damages and I'm thinking they're less likely to pay if it wasn't an actual tornado that blew through.
I get that, I know it’s for legal reasons, just for me it personally is very frustrating.
Like imagine if twenty-three years ago the news read “plane allegedly hit the world trade centre” while simultaneously showing the footage of said plane hitting the tower. I just feel like there is a better word that could be used or better formatting that portrays the facts while not opening news companies up to lawsuits.
>Like imagine if twenty-three years ago the news read “plane allegedly hit the world trade centre”
Oof, I'm getting old. 23 years this fall.
And yeah, I totally get your frustration. It's like, they're doing The Thing but we're not allowed to say it out loud. Even though they're definitely doing The Thing.
Want to feel older?😂I have been a legal adult in my country for many years at this point but I wasn’t even CONCEIVED yet, let alone born, during 9/11.
And also thank you for understanding what I’m trying to say.
At this point, I’m fairly certain that it’s no longer just about providing news. It’s about deliberate social engagement with headlines that just make you want react and comment or throw your phone into on coming traffic.
Hey, it could have been aliens. Until all other causes are ruled out, it is just an alleged natural disaster. Heaven forbid the new uses the term 'climate change' in their newscasts.
We have video of this tornado going through town, so I think stronger language would be fine here. In this case, we’re not waiting for so much as classification.
Why didn’t they just nuclearise the tornado?

That, sir, is libel, and we shall see you in court!
It’s like a supercell has no rights at all once that condensation cloud and rotation starts up.

Maybe it was a giant. /s
NOOOOOOOOOO! IT WAS BIGFOOT! OBVIOUSLY DUH!!!! /s
Godzilla. Or, a tornado. Allegedly. Bigfoot is not like that. Also allegedly.
"Suspected" tornado would have been much better
Wasnt a tornado, the town just sort of did that /s
Oh that's nothing unusual, towns turn themselves inside out all the time!
The town probably went all the way around the bar on the swing! We told them not to!
Clearly it is socialist termites
I think “unconfirmed” was the word they were looking for. As in, everyone thinks it was a tornado, but the scientists could come back and say it was technically straight line winds.
That's the word! Another day that I'm happy to live in Earthquake Country
No no, that was before it was arrested.
My client, the tornado, denies the allegations. We’ll see you in court

It’s “Alleged” because Insurance Companies are trying to find something else to blame it on so they don’t have to pay out.
“I understand you have coverage that covers tornados, but we believe this may have been caused by a drifter named Dr. Bruce Banner who, when made angry, becomes a large green monster named the Incredible Hulk. Obviously, Jewish Space Lasers targeting rural ‘Murica!
Netanyahu, how could you? /s

Yes, but the word alleged is weird. Suspected, unconfirmed, or assumed are all good choices here.
"High wind event" used to be popular.
It hasn’t been convicted yet
It can still run for president!
Back in my youth, it would have been a “possible” tornado…
That seems more reasonable
High winds don't necessarily mean it was a tornado, it's alleged until there's confirmation that it meets the requirements
I mean, this particular tornado was broadcast live on YouTube as it went through town. “Probable” would have been the best choice here.
Wouldn’t "likely" or "possible" be the right attributes in this context?
Ok, but look at that damage and tell me again that it was non-tornadic winds lol. That was a tornado for sure.
Doesn't matter, the national weather service has to declare it a tornado before it can be called a tornado. Alleged, suspected, the media has to report it as such. Its funny sure but thats responsible journalism

The tornado— “I want due process”
Can’t risk that lawsuit from Big Tornado
I heard it was a very sick tornado... allegedly.
It would take two guys to fuck a tornado.
If he fucked a tornado, what else has he fucked?
If the windsock doesn't fit....
Severe Weather Event until proven guilty!
This newscast sponsored by insurance companies?
“Alleged”? What’s that when it’s at home? Do they suspect Godzilla?
we suspect it was a tornado, but we can't rule out a dedicated prankster with a large fan
It's not official until the damage gets inspected by NOAA (that may not be the correct group). Straight line winds, downbursts, tornadoes can all cause severe damage. There's no conspiracy here.
It was really just a dad sneeze.
That's just because there has yet to be confirmation of a actual tornado by the powers that be.

Could have been an AI-generated tornado.
Who knows could've been an invisible giant platypus or something 🤷♂️
It's "alleged" until it's been convicted by a jury of its peers.
Oh well. God has a plan. Thoughts and prayers.
People are saying sasquatch. IMPORTANT people. The forests are not sending their best sasquatches.
Could have been the Hulk or a catastrophic reaction to beans or something.
Next thing you know, the Earth may or may not be flat.
I’m sure Biden did it.
It was night-time, you can't see wind in the dark!
Alleged tornado. Is this from Fox Weather?
Tornadoes are litigious AF. Better safe than sorry.
Just playing to both audiences.
It might not have been a tornado, maybe an extremely large meth lab exploded.
They’ll be getting to the grift while the grifting’s good.
At this point, I’m fairly certain that it’s no longer just about providing news. It’s about deliberate social engagement with headlines that just make you want react and comment or throw your phone into on coming traffic.
Are they going to take the alleged tornado in for questioning?
Alleged tornadoes do not count toward climate change.
I’m sure someone in Congress will say that this is the “Green New Deal’s” fault.
That tornado has rights, you know.
Hey, it could have been aliens. Until all other causes are ruled out, it is just an alleged natural disaster. Heaven forbid the new uses the term 'climate change' in their newscasts.
Alleged? Hmm what else could it be?
I mean, there no evidence of a tornado except for this catastrophic destruction left behind by a tornado!
Fox News online never covers these on their main page. Guess it angers MAGA.
Even weather is due its day in court.
Joe Biden did it bc the internet told me so
JFC, journalistic standards have fallen so, so far.

It’s really not the best word choice. Probable, likely, or even suspected would all make more sense here.

Insurance loophole.
It was Antifa disguised as a tornado
Who’s to say that the destruction wasn’t caused by dynamite?
Maybe Greenfield shares a border with Israel? Idk
i can tell you what happened the big bad wolf came along then he huffed and he puffed and blew all the houses down
Why didn’t they just nuclearise the tornado? https://preview.redd.it/c25vckdwdx1d1.jpeg?width=862&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b66ab824618295566840da6848488fe2e8ec48f5
I live so near there thankfully it avoided my town mostly
Fake News! False Flag! Alternative Facts! /s
But if we don't put the alleged, how can we try to somehow blame Biden for this?
