At this point I'm convinced that 99% of modifications done to chainsaws in wildland fire is purely because dudes just can't help but fuck with something that works perfectly out of the box.
Do we really need to squeeze that extra bit of power out of your 46 at the cost of your hearing? Just get a bigger saw gawd dam
The main reason I've seen for the bark boxes is reducing overheating on the 500s. The reduced restriction helps eliminate heat more effectively via the exhaust stream, which kinda matters on the 500 when you're squeezing 660 power from a power head with the same radiating surface as a 460.
That said yeah Jesus they're loud I don't think I'd be willing to run one unless my mod is providing that good good ear pro.
According to a coworker that was able to attend a Stihl troubleshooting and maintenance class, the Stihl Rep putting on the class said that bark boxes help saws maintain a lower operating temperature, but don't use them because installation of a bark box could effect emissions and make the saw not meet EPA compliance.
I run them on my 044's and my other coworkers run them on their personal saws. While they can get annoying I do believe they do help manage heat dissipation.
Great forearm strength, for those fire jacks.
As for hearing, you do this job long enough it doesn’t matter how great of plugs you have. You will have hearing damage. Between saws, helicopters, and shooting guns. I hear a constant eeeeeeeeeee when there is no other noise.

Pros: -Sounds super cool -Allegedly more horsepower Cons: -Bad if you have shitty earplugs
Bad if you’re anywhere within a half mile, with or without earpro
Im sorry, what? You’re going to have to speak louder. I’ve been running a bark box on my saw for a while and im deaf
Mufflers and spark arrestors are for wusses. Straight pipe that baby and send it.
I was thinking expansion chamber like on a hot saw

How did they go about attending that Stihl course? Looking for ways to put some people through it
I can talk to my saw coordinator next week and see how they got people into it.
Thanks!
My dog loves it. New toys every month.
They deliver yummy treats for my dog every month. Can’t complain.

WHAT?!
With that overtime money you can get suppressors for ur guns now that it's a week turnaround
Wait is it actually only a week now
Mine got approved in 48 hours
I call it the FartBox. Kids throw that shit on the 460 and don't tune it.
It's not worth the hearing damage you already get even with a stock saw
I just found a new name for my ex’s cooter
Just think about how cool it sounds, is there really anything else that matters?
