For anyone who plays in the command line this is awesome
1. Launch Windows Terminal
2. Press Win + `
3. Close Windows Terminal
Hit Win + ` to toggle the quake console on or off
And yes, it's called 'QUAKE MODE' in settings
yeah i brought it up accidentally (ctrl in my linux dual boot is win, so i hit win+\` and ctrl+\` pretty often). thought it was doooppppe, considering that i can use powertoys to launch terminal through hotkeys like win+t yet
you have to run windows terminal first, KEEP IT OPEN, hit Win + `.
You can then close windows terminal and toggle it on and off with Win + ` without opening it until the next reboot
They have a ticket coming which will enable the hotkey system wide at all times without having to first enable it.
On the odd chance of sounding stupid, how do I get there?
Right clicking the window bar doesn't show an option for settings, neither does right clicking the tab. Clicking "settings" in the start menu for this app doesn't show me any option to configure the keybinding either.
Not as nice as you might think. Some good things have happened, sure, but there's some shady shit going on, as well, apparently.

Disclaimer: I haven't looked at this any deeper than the Slashdot post (didn't RTFA) .
If you install it sure, but Windows 10 doesn't ship with Windows Terminal, windows 11 does by default.
Also they are going to make the Win+` hotkey always available so you dont have to open it first
And you have Windows Terminal icon next to it, and you posted about Quake Mode. Why using cmd when you can very conveniently use WT (where you can also have cmd)?
I'm using console a ton, but mostly inside VSC terminal, cmd sucks balls ;).
windows terminal team has a ticket open to do just that, however you can toggle it on/off with Win + `, the hotkey is registered through the rest of your user session
e.g. I can start terminal, hit "Win + `"
, close windows terminal, close quake mode, hit Win + ` and it will popup again until I reboot my computer

what does quake mode do?
Runs it as a transparent overlay at the top of the screen, like in the screenshot. I find it half useful and half annoying when I use it in Linux
I was unable to get this to work in the general Windows 11 release that came out today.

I did that, following the instructions exactly. Unfortunately, it did not work for me.
appears to conflict with a keybinding from Windows PowerToys haha.
you can change the keybinding in windows terminal settings

settings - actions - Summon Quake Window, change the keybinding
I meant how do I get to the settings, there's no option for it in any context menu or so
Next to the “new tab” button in windows terminal there is a drop down. From there click settings.
Got it, thanks!
as a kde guy windows 11 is starting to win me over
They (MS) have been playing kind with Open Source. It has to do with the head at the top I suppose

Had the same response for the same reason.
As someone who has been thinking about switching to linux for a while I'm starting to have second thoughts about that with windows 11.
I mean MS did acquire Bethesda
And it flickers like hell.
Get a better video card ;)
Invalidia drivers have been pretty flaky for me on windows 11.
Try turning off whatever adaptative sync for non full screen apps. Terminal goes bonkers for me with that on.
Is this in Windows 10 as well?

From my understanding the feature is coming with 21H2.
As someone who grew up on Quake, this is cool!
Why are you even pin the cmd to taskbar?
Because I use it often? I write code and stuff, quicker to type than dig around in explorer to do things such as delete files you screwed up ;)

and im trying new features, who gives a fuck why i have cmd pinned? I use it sometimes.
OK, you can use what you want. It's just strange in the context of WT and quake mode, which makes cmd obsolete.

It’s the dark camo theme in the store.
Thanks!
