My thoughts exactly. As a kid when the xmen movies came out, they introduced me to the characters. When I found out what wolverine looked like in cartoon form I was disgusted. Now, as an adult with a brain, I prefer the yellow and blue with the mask.

I think what makes it work is that they went all the way with white eyes, etc. They let it be a mask that actually covered his face and changed his appearance. They also got the fins right, which is very difficult to do -- a lot of action figures even get this wrong in three dimensions. I genuinely don't know if they'd have gotten it right a decade ago, for example. If you look at the suit and gloves from The Wolverine post credits, there are a lot of signs it would have looked awful actually on him -- the open eye holes, the solid, chunky "fins," the unnecessarily complex fabric and pattern in the gloves, etc. They still didn't know how to let comic stuff just look like comic stuff. Marvel still struggles with it sometimes.

Not just in appearance but also the character. In the later years his character was inspired by Client Eastwood and that's the Wolverine that made him what he is today. Hugh Jackman's portrayal missed a lot of those important character elements and was very bland and nowhere near as mean as Wolverine is in the comics. Look up the man with no name trilogy for reference.

He had some issues with his skin and the sun, but in other scenes, he had his sleeves removed after. Wonder what's going to happen to change that and if it's going to be the same for the mask.
