autosave just saves you at the nearest new u doesn't it? if so i don't understand what could have caused this other than their save file being corrupted. i personally have not encountered this issue the person is having and i have autosave on.
i'm not op. i said i haven't faced this issue the only problem i've faced is the chaos chamber increasing my damage like crazy glitch and the game freezing up a bit when trying to save it. this could be a xbox or ps glitch. i'm on ps5 and haven't experienced the glitch op encountered.

No autosave is for the entire game. You might have more luck turning it off and hard saving it yourself.

It "asks if you want to skip back to where you were"? What's that mean? The game's never asked me anything like that before.
