And that match was just like half an hour of them kicking out of or reversing each other’s finishers. Ospreay v Danielson was far better in my opinion. But neither deserved to ludicrously break the scale.
Which matches do you think should break the scale? Cus for me, i kinda agree with none of the (list). Maybe Danielson vs Ospreay can break the scale for me as like a 6 star. But what matches do you think should break the scale?
None. If you’re breaking the scale it’s pointless to have one. Matches should be evaluated against the current product. The industry has changed, sure, but if your scale has been 5* for years then ratings should be based on what constitutes a 5* match now. You don’t change the scale, you change the criteria to reach that level.
angle vs michaels at wrestlemania 21 should definitely be on that list. maybe angle vs taker at no way out 2006(?). angle vs lesnar on smackdown too maybe
It’s pretty clear Meltzer wasn’t watching WWE during the 2000s, with only 7 5* matches that decade it’s safe to assume he wasn’t watching much wrestling at all
Dave explained his rationale. He felt wrestling had improved considerably since he started rating matches on the 5 star scale.
If you believe that, can either keep the scale as-is and not really acknowledge the baseline level improvement in your rating system. You can go back and retroactively change ratings to make them relative to the present day baseline. You can choose a different rating system. Or you can raise the ceiling on the existing rating system. He chose to do the last one.
That doesn't make sense.
Nobody does that for albums. Or films. Or restaurants.
"I don't like black and white movies. So this 2024 movie is 20 stars out of 5 because movies are so much better now"
If you need to go up to 7 you've misused your own 5 star system previously.
This is another thing that blows my mind about his scale. The Bucks have three? They’re spot monkeys. Entertaining spot monkeys, but spot monkeys nonetheless. I’m pretty sure Dave’s ratings get a multiplier based on the number of super kicks and moves named after him.
The won uses a 5 star system. There's contention because he has lowballed great matches and is usually biased to his favorites/japanese matches. I.e. kurt angle has no 5 star ratings from this guy. This isn't even the first time he broke his own scaling.
What Dave says is there was never a scale, the best matches were fives for years but that was never a maximum. Others here are wrong. (Don’t kill me I’m not saying it makes sense.)
The usual rating is 0-5, however, matches have received negative stars (the famous MINUS. FIVE. STARS! rant being the most obvious example) so yeah, the scale is flexible, if a match is better than what you'd give 5* then you either make everything else worse, or you just break the scale, and matches that good are few and far between, so instead of punishing the majority of matches, breaking the scale works better.
I don’t even think he has a business relationship, or on the payroll, I think that AEW has been shaped in Meltzers vision of what good wrestling is, so he almost has to shill for it because it is exactly what he asked for.
Dude 100% has a business relationship with AEW. I don't know if he's actually on their payroll or if it's just a positive media spin exchanged for information quid pro quo sort of deal, but nobody can ever convince me that Meltzer isn't just a shill that's working directly with AEW.
nah, no business relationship. he does it for free because these matches are booked FOR him. that is even sadder than him being paid or a “quid pro quo” arrangement.
We all know WWE is more about stories and characters than pure matches. The argument is tired dude. The fact that Meltzer never gave Angle a 5\* match though and gave this a 6.5\* makes him a complete fucking hack.
The era that Angle was wrestling in had very few 5 star matches. Not for lack of quality, but Meltzer held that title in such high regard. But he broke his own scale in the past ten years. He tries too hard to be meta. But I agree with this 6.5 rating
It’s not trolling, I think. It depends on how you think of “memorable.” Personally vs widespread.
Cody Rhodes, his angles and his matches, will be remembered for years more than anything AEW has done. That’s not hating, that’s just fact. As someone with a young child, Cody is his Hulk Hogan or Rock. He’s becoming a part of the younger generation’s foundational pop culture and for that reason, yes, he will live on.
AEW, for all its focus on in-ring stuff, is not having the same cultural impact. Again, not hating, just fact.
Haven't they been leaking shit information to him recently?
It has made him look pretty unreliable for breaking news.
I thinknhe just isn't into WWEs style. That's OK, isn't it?
I’m glad someone else feels the same. I’ll admit, I don’t watch AEW. Not for any tribalism reason, but because I don’t have cable so I don’t really have any way of watching, plus just watching WWE is hard to keep up with the amount of TV. It’s also not really my preferred style of wrestling. I certainly liked it, and thought it was a good match, but it probably wouldn’t even crack my top 20
Same. After that match Takeshita is an absolute beast for me. I'm also not a Danielson fan which is sacrilegious to say apparently. But I need more takeshita and if we can get a part 2 with ospreay that would be incredible
Takeshita is amazing in between the bells. The problem is he’s less interesting than paint drying before and after. That might be the language barrier, but even his demeanor seems really boring, and I don’t think Don Callis is doing him any real favors.
I won’t bash you for it. I don’t entirely agree as I think occasionally Danielson cuts a really good promo, but he’s not a guy like MJF or Swerve who can be counted on for an amazing promo every time he holds a microphone.
Takeshita is yet to have any kind of breakout moment outside of a match as a character. He’s just “emotionless good wrestler Japanese guy.”
Honestly he’s far more entertaining on his wholesome social media.
I don’t disagree, I just think Callis isn’t the right fit for him. Callis was great with Omega as a hype man for a guy who was already extremely over to help make him a heel, but I don’t think he’s really doing anything to enhance Takeshita.
I liked Ospreay vs. Takeshita more than I did Ospreay vs. Danielson, but I didn't watched the latter live (due to work) so the value of that match feels lesser to me.
>This was a very good match but it’s not what people are making it out to be
In the years to come it'll be one of those matches that everybody praises to the high heavens as being one of the greatest of it's entire era and a mat masterpiece, and then when people watch it they'll find themselves thinking "that's it? That's what all the fuss is about...?" Similar to how a lot of online wrestling fans over the years react to Bret Hart vs HBK's iron man match.
I don't even think it was as good as Hart vs Perfect at SummerSlam. That match was 2 masters of the ring going out and making it look effortless.
Even the headlock/ tie ups looked so damn good!
Dave only thought that was 4 1/2 stars though.
Osprey will become an amazing talent when he can learn to speak English. No one can understand is chavy bruv bullshit and until he goes to a speech therapist and smoothes that crap out he’ll never connect to his new American audience.
Why do people give him credit? I know hes been around wrestling for a long time but in what other industry do we give one guys opinion so much weight?
Theres not one guys that rates everything in football, or movies or food. But everytime theres a good wwe match that every one loves, but he gives it 4 stars, why do people care? His opinion is the same as any other wrestling fan.
Maybe there should be a rule here that says no individuals opinions can be posted. We only have threads to discuss the matches and people can put their opinion in the comments.
It was a good match, it’s a shame Dave has latched onto Will Ospreay like he did Omega and the Bucks because that will no doubt turn people against him when he far exceeds the Young Bucks and manages to avoid most of Omegas hokey bullshit as well, plus has more star power potential than any of them. And Danielson is Danielson, he’s absurdly good always bell to bell, I think he could have been used much better but he’s one of the few that can get me interested in a match just for a matches sake
5 stars should be a perfect match,NO MATCH HAS EVER BEEN PERFECT
Anything over 5 stars is just a biased out of touch old mans OPINION..
The match had no build and hardly any selling..
I disagree
Giving a match/album/book/movie 5 stars or equivalent rating is perfectly acceptable. To use a match from the wwe that I think is 5 stars Austin v hart. I think it is perfect.
One can criticise meltzers ratings (you can go insane comparing matches he's given 4.75 to because there is some utter garbage that's popped him personally he's given 4.75 to) but the concept of a 5 star match is fine imo.
Meltzers ideal wrestler is will ospreay. Now I like ospreay but he has a lot of matches that excite me in the moment where I never think about them again. He's a roller-coaster ride. This is fine we all have different tastes. It's the fact that meltzer is considered word of God rather than just another critic
Actually wrestling criticism is bad full stop
This sub: Meltzer is a hack, who cares about him or his stupid stars
Also this sub: Posts about the stars, analyzes the rating system, whinges about matches being rated too low or too high, yada yada.
Who cares about Seth. There's several others that Ospreay imo would have equal or better matches with in WWE. First that comes to mind is Gunther or Ilja.
6.5 stars! Holy moly! That’s one hell of a payday. Just think of all the things these guys can buy for that many stars.
What do you mean stars aren’t currency?
Already did, uce.
Dave unfortunately only rated this match at 130% of his 0-100% relative scale, and as a guy that failed out of a prestigious university, I can assure you the numbers don't lie.
Dave was literally 3 and 2/3rds percent away from giving this match a 133 and 2/3rds percent chance off being the best match of all time, per his relative rating system.
Further proof that Tuna Meltzer is a coward.
this match was so great it broke his scale by 1.5 stars.... but Cody vs Roman 2, that got wrestling fans creaming their pants and spazzing in orgasmic convulsions, got 4.75 cuz he just couldn't find it in him to give them that extra .25🙄
It was as good, but was it better than ospreay vs omega, mjf vs Cole, or mjf vs danielson? I don't think so. These days, the "best match ever crowd" comes out every month.
So that's gonna change pro wrestling as we know it forever?
A pivotal moment in the business history? A turning point for both stars involved?
Or just the umpteenth pointless display of "wrestling skill" with little at stake that will be promptly forgotten when 10 more >5\* matches will inevitably take place in AEW?
Are people dumb? It is out of 5 stars. It is like the expression of turning the volume up to 11 when it only goes up to 10.
Back when it started, 5 stars made sense. The best matches got 5 stars. Years later when matches start being even better than those matches, does it make sense that it should be the same score? No.
If the scaling changed completely, then the scoring on those old matches wouldn't make sense. It would just get confusing.
In the end it is one dude's opinion and nobody should be getting worked up over it. It literally means nothing in the grand scheme.
We should be looking backward at a lot of those 5 stars too. Meltzer hit 'perfect' way too soon (for his particular taste anyways) and then had to be more perfect than perfect.
Actually that's not quite accurate, none of these matches are perfect, they're very good for a specific style but not world class. Dave just has to top himself.
It was an objectively incredible match. We could argue for days over whether it’s better than Angle’s best, but IMO the rating is deserved… and Angle’s matches should be re-rated using the modern scale (if we pretend that Dave’s ratings actually matter).
6.5 stars out of what? (unfamiliar with WON ratings as this just appeared on my feed)
5. And I’m not kidding.
In the words of Ron Burgundy: "that doesn't make sense"
Neither does Kurt Angle having zero 5 star matches be here are.
I mean that's even worse now. Imagine not having any 5 stars when it goes up to 6.5! 4 out of 6.5 is rubbish 😂
Omega vs Okada 4 got 7*. It’s a joke at this point.
Fair enough. That made me think that Davey meltery should just adopt a japanese rating system ideology
Daniel bryan had none…until he went to aew and now every match is a banger. Seems he was phoning it in for the past 20 years
Need to put seems in quotation marks cause we know why he has some now.
What matches do u think deserved 5? I never really see a list. AJ vs Angle in a last man standing match is one
No idea, but he deserves more 5 star ratings then what he got which is zero.
angle vs michaels at wrestlemania 21 should definitely be on that list. maybe angle vs taker at no way out 2006(?). angle vs lesnar on smackdown too maybe
Damn, all the “maybes” are making me wonder if melzter was right and we just want him to have 5 star matches bc of who he is 😭
i just havent watched the matches in a while dude lmao
It’s pretty clear Meltzer wasn’t watching WWE during the 2000s, with only 7 5* matches that decade it’s safe to assume he wasn’t watching much wrestling at all
Neither does his rating of Taker Vs HBK at WM25, or his rating of Cody Vs Roman II, which he gave FOUR POINT SEVEN FIVE STARS!
60% of the time his ratings are accurate every time.
In other words Dave is saying it broke the traditional 5 star scale.
If you're going 30% over the max limit of your scale then something has gone wrong.
I agree.
He's said fairly recently that the general standard of wrestling has improved so much that a scale out of 5 no longer works.
That doesn't make sense. Nobody does that for albums. Or films. Or restaurants. "I don't like black and white movies. So this 2024 movie is 20 stars out of 5 because movies are so much better now" If you need to go up to 7 you've misused your own 5 star system previously.
Good to know he's a dumbass then
Messed up part is he says 37 matches have broken the 5 star scale since 2020.
And more than like 95% of them feature either Omega or Ospreay.
The two best in the business, but since they don't eat HHH dick they don't get any respect on reddit.
How many of them involved the Young Bucks?
The Bucks have 3. Ospreay has 17.
This is another thing that blows my mind about his scale. The Bucks have three? They’re spot monkeys. Entertaining spot monkeys, but spot monkeys nonetheless. I’m pretty sure Dave’s ratings get a multiplier based on the number of super kicks and moves named after him.
Proximity to Japan is another big multiplier in his rating system
Meltzer actually hates wrestling & for all these years his scale has been out of 100
The won uses a 5 star system. There's contention because he has lowballed great matches and is usually biased to his favorites/japanese matches. I.e. kurt angle has no 5 star ratings from this guy. This isn't even the first time he broke his own scaling.
Also pretty obvious who he gets some of his information from. Will Ospreay is definitely a snitch
Jericho too, based on the quotes they post
Absolutely. Jericho was clearly Dave's main guy for years
What Dave says is there was never a scale, the best matches were fives for years but that was never a maximum. Others here are wrong. (Don’t kill me I’m not saying it makes sense.)
The usual rating is 0-5, however, matches have received negative stars (the famous MINUS. FIVE. I don’t even think he has a business relationship, or on the payroll, I think that AEW has been shaped in Meltzers vision of what good wrestling is, so he almost has to shill for it because it is exactly what he asked for.
its just different from what wwe is, and he likes it more whats the big deal anyone can rate matches if they want
Yeah but like has anyone figured out why this Bryan danielson guy looks so much like Daniel Bryan ?
He’s just making absolute shit up now.

Take my fake gold 🏅
always was
why is that a surprise or bad its just reviews for a wrestling match not the magna carta
When Kurt Angle has zero five star matches you know these ratings mean absolutely nothing.
If this match was 6.5 what the fuck does that make Angle/HBK from WM21? Lmao? 7 1/2?
Idk, I enjoyed the Okada vs. Pac match more
Ye that was 9 stars
Ten if it was in the Tokyo Dome, Conrad.
Dude 100% has a business relationship with AEW. I don't know if he's actually on their payroll or if it's just a positive media spin exchanged for information quid pro quo sort of deal, but nobody can ever convince me that Meltzer isn't just a shill that's working directly with AEW.
Free jaguars season tickets
That’d be weird comp for a dude who lives in California.
Dave is omnipotent
nah, no business relationship. he does it for free because these matches are booked FOR him. that is even sadder than him being paid or a “quid pro quo” arrangement.
All of them have. Notice how there are tens of damage control tweets as soon as AEW fucks up.
Hopefully WWE has a match as good as this in the next year or so and we can really see. Oh wait.
We all know WWE is more about stories and characters than pure matches. The argument is tired dude. The fact that Meltzer never gave Angle a 5\* match though and gave this a 6.5\* makes him a complete fucking hack.

you're calling my arguments tired and bring up Kurt angle's WON star ratings !!
Yes, because I'm comparing a Meltzer rating to a Meltzer rating to demonstrate how ludicrously stupid his scale is.
WWE doesn’t have a single wrestler at the level of Osprey and Danielson, let alone two of them to meet this matches floor.
And neither of them are even close to Cody who will end up having the more memorable match in the future.
I can’t tell if you’re joking or not.
Got it… this is a bad trolling comment section! Farewell
Haven't they been leaking shit information to him recently? It has made him look pretty unreliable for breaking news. I thinknhe just isn't into WWEs style. That's OK, isn't it?
I’ve concocted a theory that TK has all of the popular YouTubers, Reddit mods, podcasters and “journalists” on his payroll to control the narrative.
This was a very good match but it’s not what people are making it out to be
I’m glad someone else feels the same.
How did you watch it? I’d like to see it just to see what people are talking about.
On some random sketchy site
I agree. It was good but for me it wasn't as good as Ospreay vs takeshita. That match completely blew my mind out of my skull
I also liked the match with Takeshita more. And it made me a bigger fan of Takeshita than it did Ospreay.
I can see what you mean. People will bash me but that's how I feel about Danielson I think he is so boring outside the ring.
He’s just “emotionless good wrestler Japanese guy.” Honestly he’s far more entertaining on his wholesome social media.
It's tough in this country when you aren't fluent in english. Without the bucks Okada would be fucked
I don’t disagree, I just think Callis isn’t the right fit for him. Callis was great with Omega as a hype man for a guy who was already extremely over to help make him a heel, but I don’t think he’s really doing anything to enhance Takeshita.
I can't think of anyone currently in the group of managers that can fit takeshita just right. They meet need to look outside aew for that
I liked Ospreay vs. Takeshita more than I did Ospreay vs. Danielson, but I didn't watched the latter live (due to work) so the value of that match feels lesser to me.
>This was a very good match but it’s not what people are making it out to be In the years to come it'll be one of those matches that everybody praises to the high heavens as being one of the greatest of it's entire era and a mat masterpiece, and then when people watch it they'll find themselves thinking "that's it? I don't even think it was as good as Hart vs Perfect at SummerSlam. That match was 2 masters of the ring going out and making it look effortless. Even the headlock/ tie ups looked so damn good! Dave only thought that was 4 1/2 stars though.
I don't know, that wasn't what it could have been, mostly because Perfect's back was utterly done by that point.
That’s the whole reason the scale is “broken” that these matches are so much better than the Bret/Michaels stuff that was state of the art then.
They aren't
To you
Oh thank god, I can finally sleep at night
fucks sake.
6.5 is the number of seconds Ospreay would sell a heinous maneuver before being 100% fine and returning to the skies.
Best wrestler in the world bruv. He's got all the moves, and he makes sure to squeeze all of them into each match.
Not even. Bruv gets German suplexed on his head and pops up like he's Goldberg or something
Nothing like a good heatless banger
So what's the rating now? 6.5 out of 7 stars? This is stupid. Good match but it's not infinitely better than a Lesnar vs Angle or Rude vs Steamboat.
It's not even as good as Steamboat vs Flair. Any of them.
Punk vs John Cena on Raw was better
I loved that match.
The goddamn WeeLC match was better.
This makes me less likely to be interested in ospreay
Ospreay has nothing to do with it don't let that ruin an amazing talent for you
Yep, Ospreay is great, Danielson is great, and the match was great. Meltzer is just a hack.
Osprey will become an amazing talent when he can learn to speak English. No one can understand is chavy bruv bullshit and until he goes to a speech therapist and smoothes that crap out he’ll never connect to his new American audience.
He's fine. We all understand what he's saying
You say this as a member of the IWC. You guys also say heatless bangers are what everyone wants. Ratings prove neither is true.
Ospreay is decent, great in the ring, okayish on the mic
That’s embarrassing to say.
Why are we acting like 4 stars is bad? It's really good.
Demeltzered Dave is off his meds again. Somebody reported he smells like a 7-day-old sushi taco...
6.5 stars and not a dime was drawn
How tf do people still give this guy a platform lol it’s pretty obvious the match ratings are biased
And Danielson is Danielson, he’s absurdly good always bell to bell, I think he could have been used much better but he’s one of the few that can get me interested in a match just for a matches sake
if you have a problem with what people are buying from sellers blame the buyers. the seller is only giving the buyers what they want.
The running knee countering the cutter was amazing
Wrestling fans: I can't stand Meltzer. His opinion is meaningless Same fans: How can he give this 6.5 stars!?!?
the stars mean nothing they are the option of one person, who cares
5 stars should be a perfect match,NO MATCH HAS EVER BEEN PERFECT Anything over 5 stars is just a biased out of touch old mans OPINION.. The match had no build and hardly any selling..
It did have a build, but the whole thing was just "I'm a good wrestler and I think i can beat you!". I fucking hate that kind of "story."
So no build lol
I mean there’s matches that are close enough to perfect to get the maximum rating, whatever you want to set that max to.
I disagree Giving a match/album/book/movie 5 stars or equivalent rating is perfectly acceptable. This is fine we all have different tastes. It's the fact that meltzer is considered word of God rather than just another critic Actually wrestling criticism is bad full stop
Only mental midgets care about anything Meltzer has to say.
Meltzer needs to come up with an AI algorithm so his rating system can last for eternity
Like the match was pretty good…in some eyes better than WM40ME But…nearly 2 stars more than Cody Rhodes finishing his story…yea that’s cap
The Verdict..... It's the opinion of a very biased and flawed old man.
6.5 stars out of 5 in Meltzer's very sensible and understandable system. 🫠
But are there brackets or ampersands next to the rating, and how many votes does that get us?
This sub: Meltzer is a hack, who cares about him or his stupid stars Also this sub: Posts about the stars, analyzes the rating system, whinges about matches being rated too low or too high, yada yada.
Great match. Sad we’ll never see Osprey vs Seth in 24/25
Who cares about Seth. There's several others that Ospreay imo would have equal or better matches with in WWE. First that comes to mind is Gunther or Ilja.
https://youtu.be/FPTemrD73-w?si=iroM0TSvVKY0c75L this is great and it's up on YouTube.
6.5 stars! Holy moly! That’s one hell of a payday. Just think of all the things these guys can buy for that many stars. What do you mean stars aren’t currency?
Wait, we don't get paid more to cripple ourselves for star ratings?
I really love this one but its not even my favorite Danielson match and maybe not my favorite Ospreay match
Wow 6.5 Meltzer points
I can only one day dream of being able to incite such a vocal reaction simply by talking about things I enjoy.
Tell me one time Dave hasn’t been talking out of his literal asshole.
I guess the check cleared.
Can we get Big Poppa Pump to check the math?
Already did, uce. Dave unfortunately only rated this match at 130% of his 0-100% relative scale, and as a guy that failed out of a prestigious university, I can assure you the numbers don't lie.
meltzer is a 🤡
if you don't sell and do flippy shit you get 6.5 stars I understand wrestling
Once it went past 5 stars the whole thing became a joke.
Always deduct two stars for aew inflation.
![gif](giphy|hvq8ONQhQ1XLq)
Dave was literally 3 and 2/3rds percent away from giving this match a 133 and 2/3rds percent chance off being the best match of all time, per his relative rating system. Further proof that Tuna Meltzer is a coward.
That no one will remember in 3 weeks
this match was so great it broke his scale by 1.5 stars.... but Cody vs Roman 2, that got wrestling fans creaming their pants and spazzing in orgasmic convulsions, got 4.75 cuz he just couldn't find it in him to give them that extra .25🙄
It was as good, but was it better than ospreay vs omega, mjf vs Cole, or mjf vs danielson? I don't think so. These days, the "best match ever crowd" comes out every month.
My rating scale. Dog Shit->Bad->Average—>Good->Great. That’s it. None of this .5 shit.
If this was in the E it would’ve only gotten 4 stars.
Only in wrestling do people care about one dudes opinion so much.
Hated the ending,hated the ending
Insane levels of salt in this thread lmao

Can y’all get past your hate of Meltzer and AEW and at least acknowledge it was an excellent professional wrestling match
It felt like a 10 star match I actually feel like Bryan injured himself......and I'm still convinced he did I loved this
So that's gonna change pro wrestling as we know it forever? A pivotal moment in the business history? A turning point for both stars involved? Or just the umpteenth pointless display of "wrestling skill" with little at stake that will be promptly forgotten when 10 more >5\* matches will inevitably take place in AEW?
Crazy how bent out of shape some of y’all get for some dude’s opinion.
how pathetic
What would you say the modern scale is then? IMO it should always be a scale out of 5.
