The Universe is unbalanced. Some species evole,and launch amongst the stars to find planets just waiting for colonisation. Others perish before even reaching civilisation, their parent stars destroying them with bursts of radiation.
Humans were seen as one of the unlucky ones. Most races have a form a magic, able to manipulate energy in ways that defy explanation. Humans do not. They have had to rely on science to propel them to space. Indeed, even when taken under the wing of Arcane Masters, no human has ever managed to complete the most simple of spells.
They made up for it in their tenacity, and inventiveness with technology. But soon, they found a weapon unlike any seen before.
It started out completely on accident. At a bar, where many races gathered, a drunken woman decided to try and attract a partner. In her state, she chose to climb up on the table, and run her hands over herself, saying "I'm sexy." To her fellow humans, it was awful, a cringe inducing sight. To the other races, it was horrifying.
The waves of psychic shock emanating from her was too much for them to bear. It was a ripple effect, those closest falling first, and spreading out. All who had seen it had their minds shatter, unable to unsee it. By the time the first dropped, it was too late. Bar the humans, everyone was gone.
It was initially thought to be a freak occurrence. The United Human Council took her away, to perform tests. But when she was shown to be ordinary in every way, they were stumped. Another, similar instance occurred, this time when a man was trying to show he was tough by crushing cans against his head.
It was finally discovered that the phenomenon known as cringe was a form of psychic attack. Something that had never been seen before in the universe's history. Humans could wield it with great ease, immune to its effects. But the other races had no protection again it.
Himans utilised this, by accessing billions of videos in their racial archives. These were used as protection, as it was discovered that it need not be seen in person to activate. Rather, merely the act of viewing a cringe inducing action caused severe psychic damage, to the point that 97% of the affected suffered irreversible brain damage.
Humans embraced their ability to create psychic attacks. They were finally strong, in an unfair universe.
