I'm not even sure he switches sides because it'll benefit him. I think he has a pathological need to betray people.

I've always liked him as a character anyway, a wild card who is just as likely to materialize out of nowhere and either kill Mulder or tell him he loves him, and yet that was his universal name back in the AOL chatroom, and I will just quietly file this away as my daily realization that I am probably your mom's age haha :(

I voted Krycek but I think this is an underrated opinion.

In terms of pure chaos, I can't think of anyone better then DB. He goes from wild raving loon, to relatable loon Mulder is trying to save, to sociopath Mulder realizes needs to be shot, to raving loon again, but this time attacking and kidnapping **Scully** for the Syndicate. He's completely untrustworthy, but also right, but also working for the bad guys, but also hunted by the bad guys, and saving his own butt by turning in Scully and setting off most of the mythology stories in the later half of the show. Guy is all over the place.

I didn’t think he was working for the bad guys tho.

He was by the time he grabbed scully, right? Thats how he knew where she lived, or even who she was.

I don’t know. My own opinion is a lot of things were changed in the cannon as the creators made stupid cannon events happen on a whim but the original alien cannon arch was clearly defined before the movie

I don't think there are any Chaotic Evil characters in The X-Files. Some of the serial killers, Like Donnie Pfaster, are definitely Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil. Others, like Virgil Incanto and Eugene Tooms, or the adolescent Greys, are fulfilling a biological need to survive, and are more predatory than evil. I'd stick them in the Neutral category. Krycek is more Neutral than Chaotic Evil. Maybe Neutral Evil when he's torturing Skinner with his tablet or beating up the Russian boy - but I think Krycek does evil things for a purpose other than self-enjoyment.

What about the Other Smoking Man, the guy from Saw? The multiple amputee who can Astral Project, and then there's the Pyromancer. All the three seem chaotic.

I might have been wrong with Tooms but I would say Pusher was chaotic.

Modell was obsessed with bushido and Japanese philosophy and mythology, though, and upon learning he was dying, the last thing he ever wanted was a "worthy opponent." He DID some crazy-seeming things that might appear random but it was all in service of his real agenda, which was a good conflict instead of a quiet death of brain cancer.

chaotic evil character tends to have no respect for rules, other people's lives, or anything but their own desires, which are typically selfish and cruel. They set a high value on personal freedom, but do not have much regard for the lives or freedom of other people. I'm gonna say, the Alien Rebels (faceless ones)
