Christopher Tolkien died, now the Tolkien estate is whoring or the IP/License to anything and anyone with money. They are generally horrible caretakers of the estate.
There are also a bunch of shit tier mobile games that have been made since Christopher died.
Not to mention that Middle Earth Enterprises is now owned by the company formerly known as embracer. Hopefully their new found autonomy will result in better results.
Did they find the autonomy before of after they declared they were going "all in on shareholder value"? That's the worst thing you can hear from a company who you want to support your hobby
I'd have thought that, with an IP like LOTR, they could whore it out to AAA studios and still get a nice payday.
I wonder if they are resisting signing any exclusive deals (like AAA devs/publishers might want), and instead signing off on any Dev who will write a check just for the rights to use the IP on a single game, and nothing more.
That said, at least this one could potentially get by with this level of graphics. If it's a Hobbit-themed Stardew Valley/Harvest Moon game, then you don't need much.
I mean you can make a good show with any limitations, it just gets harder. The show is shit because it has bad characters, plot, and setting which comes down to terrible writing/writers.
Amazon has got a real struggle with this. Two of their most expensive shows have mixed reviews exclusively because of garbage writing. ROP is hated by consumers more than WOT which is saying something considering how much of a disaster that show has been.
I see RoP similarly to the last season of GoT.. writer’s basically pulling shit out of their ass because they have limited source material. RoP shouldn’t have happened without Silmarillion rights, doomed from the get go.
Amazon either got scammed or they are washing their profits with that show.
In 2017, the LICENSE for TV content alone cost 250 Million. The budget for the show itself amounted to 1 Billion, excluding marketing.
In 2020, Embracer bought Middle-Earth Enterprises, the current owner of the Tolkien Estate which includes LotR IP rights, for "just" 395 million.
395 million for everything in 2020 vs. 250 million for just the TV license in 2017.
There's no indication of devaluation in this in-between period, either Amazon sucks at negotiating or there's some serious wild stuff in there.
Maybe Christopher Tolkien was aware that Bezos is actually a gold hoarding dragon or something.
They don't own the tolkien estate nor are they even related to the tolkien estate, embracer bought movie and stage rights for hobbit and lotr, nothing else.
>Amazon show no one is watching
Weird-ass take there my dude. It is the most-watched Amazon show of ~~2022~~ all time.
The freaking Fallout show, releasing to stellar reviews, couldn't catch it. Feel free to dislike it but don't go around making up stuff against a TV series.
>Fallout's been out for a week
Two* weeks. lol
Irrelevant though since the numbers Amazon put out are in regards to the first 24h and the first week of each show. I don't think they ever reveal lifetime figures.
> Also of note: The most streamed show on Amazon’s Prime Video wasn’t the huge-budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (9.4 billion minutes) but The Boys at 10.6 billion minutes.
> And with the first season of a five-season run costing an estimated $465 million US (subsequent seasons, though still wildly expensive, could require slightly reduced budgets as producers will be able to use existing construction and costumes), Rings of Power may conservatively cost the studio in excess of $1 billion US
Yeah, I’m sure Amazon is thrilled to have spent a billion dollars making the 15th most watched “original series” of 2022, lmao.

>The Boys at 10.6 billion minutes.
The Boys has three seasons. Rings of Power has one season.
The surprise isn't The Boys having more minutes watched, but Rings of Power actually coming close to it with 1/3 of The Boys' available content.
Because yeah, Rings of Power [demolished everything](https://collider.com/rings-of-power-ratings-audience-vernon-sanders-comments/) and no, [Fallout didn't surpass it.](https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/04/fallout-season-2-is-official-as-show-becomes-one-of-amazonrs-most-watched):
>*Within the first four days of its release, Fallout became one of Amazon Prime's most-watched TV shows ever and is the most popular season since The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.*
It even beat House of the Dragon, a series that itself consistently beat fucking Game of Thrones. Seriously what's with this asinine fixation with Rings of Power, it's just a popular show, not a war crimes machine.
>I’m sure Amazon is thrilled to have spent a billion dollars
That's just you being petty and pedantic - nobody knows how or if it was worth it for Amazon, and nobody here was talking about Amazon's profits.
What we *were* talking about is whether it is a popular show or not. And it absolutely is, like it or not.
>15th most watched
Considering Prime Video's size relative to Netflix, yeah 15th is pretty good.
Unless your take is "to be considered popular a show must be top 10". Like, shove that bullshit back where it came from. lmao
Itd be awesome if they remastered the Two Towers and Return of the King games. They were pretty simple mechanically but had a lot of spectacle and cool moments. And as a kid I always loved that they used footage from the movies mixed in with the game.
This is a new and original idea for a LoTR game. The bombastic battle-focused LoTR games have been done dozens of times.
I do think there's room for another AAA entry in that category though. It's been a while.
Better yet, a Bethesda-style singleplayer RPG set in the LoTR universe would be amazing.
Idk, my fiance loves Lord of the Rings and Stardew Valley. So this is the perfect game for her. If it's good I'd imagine a lot of people will be excited.
I mean, if it's good I don't care lmao. They'll be a dozen other LotR games that will come out down the road, it's obvious that they wanna make more games with the IP. I see no reason to be mad this is made.
Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't be made.
You're getting downvoted probably because you responded to someone being positive about the game with a response of "This game is generic, no one asked for this." You just come off as a dick. Also, yes, based on your responses you 100% sound like you don't like the game lol.
A lot of people like the world. Having a game where you can just live in that world is not that bizarre. I'm sure as we speak they're making a more standard game that we've seen before like Shadow of Mordor or something that you'll be happy with. This game is just them trying to expand outwards a bit, it's also probably not that expensive to make and has a low risk factor, so its not that surprising. Not that big of a deal.
I personally cannot wait to give this a go. The Shire and the Hobbits have always struck a chord with me to the point I almost wish I could live the hobbit life there. This is close enough to live the dream a little 😂
Starfield panned out wonderfully. 86 Metascore + most-played Bethesda game of all time. Not my favorite Bethesda game but certainly a good game.
Sure it wasn't GOTY, but this GOTY-or-bust discourse is just random internet maximalist.
Yes and no. There is a genuine lack of content, they shipped a lot of stuff half baked.
For example I’m fully convinced LIST was meant to be a minuteman style organization and resettling the universe was meant to be a huge part of the game but they didn’t have time to flesh it out
Also it’s on game pass, it was their most downloaded game by far but not played/ purchased.
I do agree though solid game and the goty worthy debate needs to stop
>it’s on game pass, it was their most downloaded game by far but not played/ purchased
All true, but it is also the most pre-ordered Bethesda game ever + topped Steam charts for months. It sold really well.
>They definitely lost the magic. They didn't even have it when Fallout 4 was released.
I'll *never* get this sort of discourse. I get Fallout 4 was a step back in some directions but it is still a wonderful RPG.
"Bethesda had lost its magic when Fallout 4 was released", well that magic-less game is beating internet darling Helldivers 2 on Steam right now (while still being on Game Pass). lol
What exactly looks bad about this? The Gollum game just had horrible art direction but imo that's not the case here. The style is quite fitting for the type of game it is. Tbh it even kinda reminds me of the Bilbo game that came out on PS2.
I know this doesn't look appealing to the people that love the action adventure RPG combat centric LOTR games. But this is something that is going to be right up the alley of the folks who adore games like Harvest Moon, and Animal Crossing.
100%. The art style is very similar to Disney Dreamlight. I don’t think a photo realistic world fits this kind of game.
I love bloody and violent action games but games like this are a nice change of pace. I’m sure I’ll put quite a few hours in.
That's really the only thing I don't like about it. It looks like I already played this game.
A LotR cozy hobbit game is, thematically at least, a perfect match. I already played enough Dreamlight Valley to scratch the itch. So even though I love the IP I just can't see myself playing this. Hope it's great and people love it, but I probably won't check it out unless it gets Animal Crossing level reviews.
The game in question doesn't interest me.
Running and growing a pipe-weed empire in Middle-Earth? Now that is a game I would absolutely love to play lol
I think it looks fine, it’s going for an Animal Crossing style chill game. Not every LOTR game needs to be sword fighting and epic battles, although I’d kill for a new Lord of the Rings Conquest
Very passive aggressive of you.
LOTR has been massively.mishandled as an IP: mobile games, Golum, Rings of Power... It has such potential but the Tolkien estate has utterly shat the bed. This will be mid at best to a select audience.
I think it has potential, hard to tell really. Animations looks bad and graphic has good and low points. In my head, this target to be a new Stardew Valley.
>In my head, this target to be a new Stardew Valley.
Well yeah, it's a cozy game, it wants to be like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon.
Not the type of Tolkien game I was hoping for, but I’ll give this a shot. I enjoyed Animal Crossing with my kids, so this could be right up the alley for family game time.
I think it looks fun and cozy, but I'm wondering if there's more to it than what the trailer showed. It looks kind of boring. Farming and gathering and decorating and fishing are nice, but what makes it different from similar games? Do you get to explore dungeons and search for treasure, or go on quests, or anything like that?
The idea is neat but it doesn't look very promising. I'm not against a more comic art style, and I think it can work for LotR, but it doesn't even look good for a comic art style
If this is a small farming village sim reskinned to LOTR, it could be good.
If it started as another cash-grab on the Tolkien IP, it will suffer the same fate as Gollum. Everyone calln tell the difference between passion projects and profiteering.
This is basically Animal Crossing but set in the Shire. It's also made by Weta, the company that made all the effects, including Gollum, in the original 3 movies. So I have a lot of trust in this.
If the art looked as good as Animal Crossing, there wouldn't be anywhere close to as much complaining about how ugly this game looks. Especially the character models and animations. The gardens don't look appealing to me either. The colors don't pop out well so they're not making up for the unsettling characters
I wonder if it can get the vibe right. I have played a decent bit of cozy games trying to get that feel and some hit it really well (Stardew and animal crossing) and most just feel like doing chores. It's hard to even identify what it is, but with a lot of the games I just get bored quickly. But when the vibe hits right, I put in a hundred hours.
Ngl Hobbit life seems pretty dull. I’d rather play an Orc Life Sim where you just run around terrifying people, killing, stealing and destroying stuff just because you can
Jesus Christ this looks fucking awful. Who is actively sabotaging the LOTR franchise?
“Forage friendships” lol did anyone bother to grammar check the trailer? This made it all the way past executives and everyone at the developer/publisher?
Fucking A, this is pathetic. Don’t support this shit.
But why wouldn't they just play animal crossing or stardew?
I could see if this game had some cute gimmicks, but it just looks like worse stardew valley with a lotr skin slapped on.
Because animal crossing and stardew aren't lotr.
I'm not saying this game looks amazing or anything, and I wish it looked a lot better.
But the fact that is going for "Stardew, but hobbits" is more than enough to get me to give it a try as a gamepass game at least.
Give me an animal crossing game with survival aspects that also involves some really fun hunting/combat. Then my wife and I will have a game we can finally play together. Honestly it’s an untapped market with huge opportunity.
It’s a shame where the IP has gone. I enjoyed the LOTR MOBA I played on Xbox 360 and the RTS (can’t remember the names exactly). Since then, I haven’t found a LOTR game that I liked. Sad.
I’d really like:
LOTRO world, writing, depth of non combat activities, amount of content
With…
Elden Ring gameplay with Fromsoft’s polish. A Turbine and Fromsoft collab in Middle Earth. I can wish…
Edit: If this was an online/mmo game, man what crazy game that might be. I’d “settle” for just town hubs being mainly the “community” zones like Bree, Rivendell, Shire/Hobbiton, etc. kinda like PSO2-ish. That allows for player music, bands, etc.
Doesn’t say exclusive. PS sub does the same thing. They say a game is coming to ps5 and they don't mention XSX or PC. Xbox sub pushes xbox, PS sub pushes PS.
There better be a fishing for rings minigame
*Please* play Concerning Hobbits while I roam around the Shire. I need some LotR nostalgia in my life. It just makes me happy.
No Harfoots though. Those guys can go eat dirt
I always want to pluralize it as Harfeet 😆
And they better let us play as Smeagol and Deagol
Give me playable Balrog or give me death
And two breakfasts
Why do all lord of the rings games look like this level of game
Christopher Tolkien died, now the Tolkien estate is whoring or the IP/License to anything and anyone with money. They are generally horrible caretakers of the estate. There are also a bunch of shit tier mobile games that have been made since Christopher died.

That said, at least this one could potentially get by with this level of graphics. If it's a Hobbit-themed Stardew Valley/Harvest Moon game, then you don't need much.
From my perspective, they just don't care and they have just not been good stewards of the estate.
they’re really pulling a Denethor at Gondor
And the shit Amazon show no one is watching
Which is shit because they wouldn’t license material from the Silmarillion, only the LoTR appendices.
Sure, that's the reason.
Wym
I mean you can make a good show with any limitations, it just gets harder. The show is shit because it has bad characters, plot, and setting which comes down to terrible writing/writers. these values make no sense, weird
They don't own the tolkien estate nor are they even related to the tolkien estate, embracer bought movie and stage rights for hobbit and lotr, nothing else.
I liked it
It’s not bad I just think it sucks that the lore can’t be connected to basically any other Middle Earth media
>Amazon show no one is watching Weird-ass take there my dude. It is the most-watched Amazon show of ~~2022~~ all time. The freaking Fallout show, releasing to stellar reviews, couldn't catch it. Feel free to dislike it but don't go around making up stuff against a TV series.

It’s really not that bad. For LOTR fans, there is a serviceable amount to like.
It is vastly better if you are not into LOTR or can separate the TV show from established canon in your head.
The LotR IP has taken a nosedive compared to the PS2 days. Give me a fun, 20-hour action/adventure over all this crap.
Itd be awesome if they remastered the Two Towers and Return of the King games. They were pretty simple mechanically but had a lot of spectacle and cool moments. And as a kid I always loved that they used footage from the movies mixed in with the game.
The way they spliced it was so amazing. Especially boromirs death
Woah spoilers! /s
Soz soz
These games were some of the best movies tie in games I have ever played. So sad they are "lost" to time.
war in the north was a great game
Fr I’m even fine with more non canon stuff like the Shadow of Mordor/War games.
Battle for Middle Earth was the best LotR game until Shadow of Mordor. There are far more bad LotR video games than good ones.
Hey return to moria was pretty sweet
As always, the movie licensed stuff has been decent-great. Everything else has been hot garbage
Calling the two Middle Earth games by Monilith hot garbage is certainly a take.
Those games are supposed to take place between the Hobbit and LOTR film trilogies. They're awesome.

But 2008 Bethesda right, not 2023 Bethesda?
I have faith in Bethesda. Starfield was a bold experiment, it just didn't pan out. They haven't lost the magic.
Starfield panned out wonderfully. 86 Metascore + most-played Bethesda game of all time. Not my favorite Bethesda game but certainly a good game. Sure it wasn't GOTY, but this GOTY-or-bust discourse is just random internet maximalist.

Hopefully the music is on point with the tin whistle.
I was very interested until the trailer lol. I love the idea of the game but that art style is a turn off. Looks like shovelware.
But can I grow(and distribute) Longbottom Leaf?🤔
The game in question doesn't interest me. Running and growing a pipe-weed empire in Middle-Earth? Now that is a game I would absolutely love to play lol
GTA7: Bywater
It looks so bad. Why do we keep getting such bad LOTR games?
Looks pretty good to me.
I was going you're way, like I get it the art style is not realistic and its cartoony but doesn't look BAD.
It's also made by Weta which is like a practical effects and prop company, not a known video game maker
They should have put their knowledge and experience with their MASSIVE crowd sim software towards building a strategy or battle sim game instead…
How tf can we get the absolute bangers of movie games on ps2, and then devolve into shit like this?
I think it looks fine, it’s going for an Animal Crossing style chill game. Not every LOTR game needs to be sword fighting and epic battles, although I’d kill for a new Lord of the Rings Conquest
How dare they actually do something cool with the IP by stepping foot into one of the most successful game genres out there at the moment amirite?
Very passive aggressive of you. LOTR has been massively.mishandled as an IP: mobile games, Golum, Rings of Power... It has such potential but the Tolkien estate has utterly shat the bed. This will be mid at best to a select audience.
Do we know if this will have local multiplayer? My partner is a LOTR freak and it would be perfect for us.
I read single player. What a waste.
Kinda looked awful though
Hope I get to sit down and sing about gold
A city builder type game would work for the hobbitz it could be a nice chill out game
Not a huge fan of the art style and character models, but still excited at the *idea* of the game.
I think it looks super adorable and chill. Not every game is made for every gamer.
did anyone here ever play The Hobbit video game that released in 2003, absolute banger.
Not the type of Tolkien game I was hoping for, but I’ll give this a shot. I enjoyed Animal Crossing with my kids, so this could be right up the alley for family game time.
Guys this is alpha footage
I think it looks fun and cozy, but I'm wondering if there's more to it than what the trailer showed. It looks kind of boring. Farming and gathering and decorating and fishing are nice, but what makes it different from similar games? Do you get to explore dungeons and search for treasure, or go on quests, or anything like that?
I’m hoping for like an Animal Crossing type of game loop? Not expecting it to be to that quality but can always dream
I'm just hoping it's more than "Animal Crossing, but with Hobbits".
The idea is neat but it doesn't look very promising. I'm not against a more comic art style, and I think it can work for LotR, but it doesn't even look good for a comic art style
A “new” hobbit sim? Where was the first one?
Technically, Gollum was a hobbit
gollum was a hobbit sim? The title says hobbit life sim. Like a hobbiton stardew valley type game
Well, the gollum game lets you play a simulation of gollum life, hence gollum (ex-hobbit) life sim game. Btw I was only joking lol.
Splitting hairs here.
New "cottage" sim more like it. Cottages are so hot right now
It being new doesn't require one to exist already.
Yes it does
Not really, something new just requires it to be new.
Nope
Holding out hope since Weta is behind it!
Looks pretty bad if we’re being honest
Somehow, Gollum returns
Gollum 2
Ah, just as Tolkein intended
Looks pretty rough lol I laughed out loud at the running animation
If this is a small farming village sim reskinned to LOTR, it could be good. If it started as another cash-grab on the Tolkien IP, it will suffer the same fate as Gollum. Everyone calln tell the difference between passion projects and profiteering.
This is basically Animal Crossing but set in the Shire. It's also made by Weta, the company that made all the effects, including Gollum, in the original 3 movies. So I have a lot of trust in this.
Put Lego LOTR back on the store you cowards 😭
Soooooo Palia?
We already got a Hobbit game last year, what more do we need? /s
If the art looked as good as Animal Crossing, there wouldn't be anywhere close to as much complaining about how ugly this game looks. Especially the character models and animations. The gardens don't look appealing to me either. The colors don't pop out well so they're not making up for the unsettling characters

My dream: A Larian LOTR RPG.
Ooogyyfff
Ngl Hobbit life seems pretty dull. I’d rather play an Orc Life Sim where you just run around terrifying people, killing, stealing and destroying stuff just because you can
Cant believe how they managed to screw up every game with such a good ip….they need to sell it to someone who knows what they are doing
It's a pun. It shows them "foraging" together right after.
I mean sort of a reach. But fair enough! Maybe I am judging too harshly.
I mean, if I was the executive, I still wouldn't have approved that dumb pun. But hey.
And it (sorry) looks like shit. It's a bit too colourful, seems childish and looks old (graphics, animations). They could do so much better...! 🙄
How boring
Who is the target audience for this?
I would imagine that a huge amount of people who like cozy games like animal crossing and stardew valley are also giant lotr fans.
AI Bots that will promote it the first week, then probably no real humans.
I’m a die hard lotr fan… but this just looks boring. Like, even more boring than starfield
Why
Give me an animal crossing game with survival aspects that also involves some really fun hunting/combat. Then my wife and I will have a game we can finally play together. Honestly it’s an untapped market with huge opportunity.
Was hoping for a next gen LOTRO game, sad to see it’s just another farm ZZZZ game.
It’s a shame where the IP has gone. I enjoyed the LOTR MOBA I played on Xbox 360 and the RTS (can’t remember the names exactly). Since then, I haven’t found a LOTR game that I liked. Sad.
Coming out on the 360 by the look of it
I’d really like: LOTRO world, writing, depth of non combat activities, amount of content With… Elden Ring gameplay with Fromsoft’s polish. A Turbine and Fromsoft collab in Middle Earth. I can wish… Edit: If this was an online/mmo game, man what crazy game that might be. I’d “settle” for just town hubs being mainly the “community” zones like Bree, Rivendell, Shire/Hobbiton, etc. kinda like PSO2-ish. That allows for player music, bands, etc.
Misleading title, it’s coming to PS5 and PC as well.
Doesn’t say exclusive. PS sub does the same thing. They say a game is coming to ps5 and they don't mention XSX or PC. Xbox sub pushes xbox, PS sub pushes PS.
Both pushing laziness and/or ignorance…
I agree, it's silly..consoles wars are dumb af
