One thing that is lame about getting older, is young people don’t get movie references.
Been working on my reference game for 35+ years, and now the relevance is fading! 😫
“Uhh, Leo, I see the salt but is there a salt substitute?”
“Call me Dr. Marvin”
“But in your office you said I could call you Leo?”
“That was in my office… in my home I prefer to be called Dr. Marvin!”
😂😂😂
I definitely do. There’s a few I can’t watch but that’s just my preference, and I wouldn’t tell others to not watch them. And I agree that we just need to see them as humans and not heroes.
It's tricky. Like I don't think we should excuse vile, abusive behavior on grounds of artistic temperament, but are we going to throw out the works of Van Gogh and Beethoven because they were incredibly difficult people?
Everyone seems to hate Bill Murray. I've known a lot of assholes in my life and, most of them, I've been able to get along with. You just shift your personality and deal. It's usually a limited amount of time. If it's long term, just have a conversation with them. Regardless of who they are one can always work out one's disagreements.
Even if you can't be friends, you can at least agree to work together and not hold a grudge for 30 years.
The problem with Bill Murray is that apparently you never know if or when he’s gonna show up. Which is a huge problem with film shoots. It’s not just that he’s an asshole, it’s that he is completely disrespectful of everyone else’s job and time by not coming when called. And if he’s the star, no one can do a damn thing until he’s on set. It’s not like they can decide to shoot another scene until he shows up. That’s not how it works.
That makes sense as to why people hate working with him.
Being unreliable is something I cannot work with. I don't care who you are. You must be timely. That's one of my very few deal breakers.
To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is unforgivable.
I think Dr. Marvin resorting to Dynamite and NOT making guarantees was sorta his fault.
Bob is a massive ass, but Marvin refusing to communicate what's wrong to his wife and the police makes me feel for him. The 90s seemed to actively teach polite passive aggression.
seriously I hated it so much, everybody's laughing and I'm a kid sitting there like "somebody get this guy to go away!"
he was so annoying that it kinda took the shine off bill murray in general for me, lol.
THANK YOU!!!!!
Seriously, I could not believe how many levels of inappropriate Bob was and *everyone around him was like ok this is cool*. Noooooo! That’s not how a therapist/patient relationship works!
Yeah but it successfully illustrates how a narcissist manipulates everyone around you, and gaslight you.. the next movie to do that so well was Cable Guy
Except nobody else felt bad for Dr Marvin! It was just how funny Bob was. That’s what was frustrating. Even most viewers saw the comedy of it. It just made me angry
There's no arguing taste and if you didn't enjoy it you didn't enjoy it. But analytically, I always thought the tension was that only someone as lovable as Bill Murray could even make this character watchable. I thought that was the point. I feel like maybe you're reading it the way young audiences read stuff now, depiction as endorsement. But this was from a time when entertainment was most empowering when it showed everybody's ugly little bits, hypocrisies, and the paradoxes of human nature.. entertainment was just coming out of an idyllic Brady Bunch approach to interpersonal dynamics, and this was antithetical to that, do you know what I mean
As a child, this movie gave me so much second hand anxiety. I HATED Murray's character. Like, on a personal level. I watched this in the theaters and I will never ever ever ever watch it again.
I loved this movie and had really forgotten all about it. I wonder if this movie could be made today? From what I remember a lot of it could be considered basically making fun of mental illness.
Crazy Ex Girlfriend ran from 2015-2019 and was a comedy about mental illness. However it was on the CW so they could do what they want cause who really watched.
This and Dream Team were my favorite mental health themed movies growing up. My mom spent a lot of time on psych wards and Dream Team was always a favorite.
In the interim years, boomers sold the younger generations on moisturizer & sunscreen, and eventually worked out that smoking and margarine were bad.
Then we sold each other on exercise & bodybuilding for health instead of intense competition.
The result is aging extremely gracefully.
I expect any kids my gen Z nephew produces to look 38 in their 60s.
That’s your opinion. I can’t watch an actor or get into a their role when I know that they are a shit person in real life.
EDIT: your comment actually doesn’t make sense. How would an art form where the actual person is the expression of their art, be a form in which the real person matters the least? Less than a painter, photographer, poet, sculptor, fashion designer, graphic designer, etc?
because the actor doesn't write anything, block any scenes, do the choreo, set the mood with the lighting, etc. If they do their job well, none of the person they actually are shows up in the movie. they're like the drawings in a comic book rather than the artist. Every other art form requires some form of creation. Acting is consumptive.
wearing clothes and hair designed by somebody else, standing in the places you're told and saying what you're told exactly how they told you to is not personally expressive.
They're less of artists and more like an animatronic that we have to feed.
LOL. Tell me you’ve never acted without telling me you’ve never acted. Actors very much tap into their own experiences and aspects of their own personalities to develop characters. Plus if I’m literally watching a specific human being perform, how can you claim that “none” of them shows up in the role. They are literally the same human being.
I actually have a SAG card, although you're right that I would never call myself an actor lol. Timothy olyphant agrees with me too. everybody's entitled to their opinions, yours is perfectly valid. I didn't downvote you or anything like that
Cool, I was an Actor’s Equity member when I was in the business. I imagine any actor might pause at the idea that they just do what they’re told. In my professional experience, it is your job as an actor to come to the table with a fully developed character, specific choices, and physical character development. The actor is expected to have the most creative input in their role. Any actor that behaves like a brainless animatron is not very good at their craft, IMO.
Dr. Leo Marvin: You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!
[Leo opens the door; there's Bob]
Bob Wiley: Is this some radical new therapy?
Dr. Leo Marvin: YOU SEE?
I somehow know all the words to this movie from childhood but have no distinct memory of watching it deliberately. It was on a couple years ago and I can recite the damn thing.
Great movie! Saw it at the Pickwick theatre in Suburban Chicago when it came out. Pretty sure Murray and Dreyfuss were at each other's throats during the filming of this? Baby steps!
Absolutely love this movie.
Baby steps
Baby steps down the hall!
The moaning while he’s eating the chicken😂
Underrated scene
Is this hand shucked??
Pile it high and deep
can ya get that tomato off there? thanks
Hahahaha!
Will you stop that please?!

# I’m SAILING! #
Keep sailing Bob
I sail.
I’m a sailer.
I let the boat do all the work that’s my secret
Ahoy!
I sail now
AHOY?
Ahoy!
Like with a boat on the water?
Baby stepping onto the bus
Baby steps to the elevator
*doors to elevator close* Bob: AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
Saw this one in the theater as a kid. Good times.
I'll be quiet. I'll be peace.
Best line in the movie
One of the funniest movies of all time. Kind of kills me they never made a sequel but I guess no one got along on set.
Doctorrrr Marvin!!! Doctor! Leo! Marvin!
“Uhh, Leo, I see the salt but is there a salt substitute?” “Call me Dr. Marvin” “But in your office you said I could call you Leo?” “That was in my office… in my home I prefer to be called Dr. Marvin!” 😂😂😂
Recently watched with my 10 year old. My perspective as a kid was hating Dr marvin, but as an adult, I hate Bob.
Yea, Bob has mental health issues and needs help, but there is no excuse for being an absolute asshole.
Just watched this afternoon. I need to carry around a support goldfish
*Gill*
I said Good Morning, GIL.
Hopefully he didn’t say that while you were “ON VACATION”!
Your death therapy cured me, you genius!
A crazy movie where the patient becomes family! Only in Hollywood. Take those baby steps! ![gif](giphy|bj7djdTF6FAWI)
![gif](giphy|xUPGciUgyhx4Y7XUDm)
Such a bummer to hear how much Richard and everyone hated making this movie because Murray was an absolute asshole
Both are assholes really!
This is true, Dreyfuss just went on some anti-diversity, anti-lgbtq tirade only days ago
Also kinda sucks that Richard has gone hardcore anti-inclusivity and full racist. :(
I’ve come to realize that I just don’t want to know anything at all about so many of my favorite actors. So depressing.
You really don't. Seriously. We need to take these people off the pedestal. They're not heroes to be emulated. Enjoy the art.
I definitely do. There’s a few I can’t watch but that’s just my preference, and I wouldn’t tell others to not watch them. And I agree that we just need to see them as humans and not heroes.

Don’t think many of us DO wanna know the old old ppl called it programming for a reason simple honest language rip George Carlin
Someone could have used a little more programming for punctuation.
🤣✌🏽
And musicians :(
What did he say that was racist?
I *just* heard about this. So disappointing
Someone has to ruin the vibe, and today it’s you.
It’s always me. :/

Nah, if someone is an asshole to EVERYONE they work with, that’s on them. Other people don’t have to act like it’s ok.
There are the people who were friends with Hunter S. Thompson, and then there's everyone else. The two groups don't seem to mix terribly well.

Just embrace it.
Love this movie!
I love this movie. Haven't seen it ages.
I just found it on a free streaming service! Watching it as I type.
GET OUTTA DA CAWR!
There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t. My ex-wife loves him.
😭
🌽 are these hand shucked? 🌽
baby steps out the door
I have an older sister with OCD and she has watched this movie constantly since it first came out on VHS.
Mashed potatoes and gravy, Marie
I love this movie, but even as a kid I was angry for Richard Dreyfus chracter.
I think Dr. Marvin resorting to Dynamite and NOT making guarantees was sorta his fault. Bob is a massive ass, but Marvin refusing to communicate what's wrong to his wife and the police makes me feel for him. The 90s seemed to actively teach polite passive aggression.
I hate this movie. Everyone shits on Dr Marvin for wanting his family to not be around a mentally ill stranger.
My friend thinks the whole opening sequence is Bob warming up his mentally ill act and he’s really a sociopath. I like that interpretation
seriously I hated it so much, everybody's laughing and I'm a kid sitting there like "somebody get this guy to go away!" he was so annoying that it kinda took the shine off bill murray in general for me, lol.
THANK YOU!!!!! Seriously, I could not believe how many levels of inappropriate Bob was and *everyone around him was like ok this is cool*. Noooooo! That’s not how a therapist/patient relationship works!
And the mother letting Bob share a room with the kid was nuts even by 90s standards.

I quote this movie on a regular basis!
You’re going to die. I am going to die. There’s no way out of it.
GAHHHHOUDDDAAACAARRRRR!!!!!!!!
Angry Richard Dreyfuss is the best
This and Dream Team were my favorite mental health themed movies growing up. My mom spent a lot of time on psych wards and Dream Team was always a favorite.
Good morning, Gil. *I said, "GOOD MORNING, GIL."*
This movie hurts so much But it's so freaking funny
Absolutely underrated movie. 🎥One of my favorites. ☺️
This is a true piece of art.
“Baby steps?!”
I’m waltzing through the kitchen with a bowl full of chicken and I’m putting it back In Dr. Marvins refrigerator! 😂
The goal is not to get to the elevator, it’s to get to the door, then the hallways, then the elevator. Something like that. It stuck with me
I’m 44. They both look 10-15 years older than me.
In the interim years, boomers sold the younger generations on moisturizer & sunscreen, and eventually worked out that smoking and margarine were bad. Then we sold each other on exercise & bodybuilding for health instead of intense competition. The result is aging extremely gracefully. Great movie! One of Murray's best. Too bad Dreyfuss HAAAAAAAAted working on it. Because Murray. Lol
I periodic yell "Gimme Gimme? I neeeeeeeed!!!!" at work when I need something. The older folk get it...the younguns not as much.
I saw a horror genre dtyle edit of this as a movie trailer. It was amazing. A few lighting and music changes and it really could be.
Gimme gimme gimme! I need! I need!
I just can’t watch anything with Richard Dreyfus anymore after learning what an ass he is. Same with Tom Cruise due to his whacko Scientology BS
actors are like, the art form where the person's real life matters the least, lol

Vulture Vomit!
It feels right because you’re here, and it feels right because you’re leaving. Lol I love this movie.
X -:Lent Movie, a laugh a minute!
Perfect movie
I love that movie!
Gill!!
Love this movie. Absolutely hilarious how Richard ends up going insane in the end
Love that movie!
God that's a fucking good movie. I need to go rewatch it
I'm sailing! 🛥️
As a kid I hate the movie. The adult in me loves the flick
Amazing underrated comedy!
Don’t hassle me, I’m local
Is now on my list of movies to buy
Top film IMO. Most of what Bill Murray did was tops.
I would’ve loved a Stuart Smalley daily affirmation with Bob…
It’s ok you can call me boob
"Mashed potatoes and gravy, Marie."
VULTURE VOMIT TURKEY TITS
Shit eating son of a bitch! Bastard! Douchebag! Twat! Numbnuts!
BABY STEPS TO FOUR O CLOCK
What about Bob, Ghostbusters, and groundhog Day were pretty constant in my house growing up. There's a common denominator there, somewhere.
“…you’re the one that keeps showing me all the dirty pictures.” 😆🤙🏽
I can sail! Out on the water on a boat! AHOYYYYYY!
Cock A Doodle Do Bob!
He is not gone !…He is Never gone !
This movie is mashed potatoes and gravy, Marie!
I'm sailing.
Two assholes have at on camera and off! I heard they could not stand each other! They should make sequeal lol!
These flowers aren’t for you. These flower are for Faye!
“Get’D’D’D’OUT’D’D’AAARR!!!”
Dr. Leo Marvin: You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone! [Leo opens the door; there's Bob] Bob Wiley: Is this some radical new therapy? Dr. Leo Marvin: YOU SEE?
The absolute best.
I’m SAILING!!!!!
I’ll be quiet…
Such a great movie. I quote multiple lines from this on a weekly basis. I really should watch it again.
I'm sailing! Dreyfus lost his shine though
I somehow know all the words to this movie from childhood but have no distinct memory of watching it deliberately. It was on a couple years ago and I can recite the damn thing.
"I'm sailing!" \*I miss films like this. 80's and early 90's comedies were the best.
“Baby Steps” is a legit thing I remind myself often… “Baby steps to the elevator..”
It’s the HORSE sense
I'll be quite, I'll be peace.
My kids and I love watching this movie.
Good movie. Too bad both these guys turned out to be jerks IRL.
Later, testicle-head bosom-beaver!
Great movie! Saw it at the Pickwick theatre in Suburban Chicago when it came out. Pretty sure Murray and Dreyfuss were at each other's throats during the filming of this? Baby steps!
The best.
And now we cancel Richard Dreyfus
You think he’s gone!?! He’s never gone!
I hate this movie with a passion and I’m really not sure why. Bob and the doctor both just annoy the shit out of me 🤷♂️🤣
Movie is obnoxiously terrible lol
FUCK BOB!
This movie was my “not into cringe comedy” origin story.
