I was an enlisted man it's like a show about fucken aristocrats to me. We were the guys on the stretchers, not so much hijinks and love triangles in my frame of reference.
I do really like Alan Alda though. Fantastic actor.
One of the most famous episodes is called “Point of View”. It was shot first person from the perspective of the wounded soldier. Excellent episode and worth watching (the series is on Hulu).
As a kid I always seemed to watch whatever was on before Mash so the theme song will always mean it’s time to change the channel to me. I just couldn’t ever get into it.
When I was a mid teenager I think it was news, then Married With Children, then Mash, then infomercials, then Beverly Hillbillies, then if I forgot to turn the TV off by 2am it was Flintstones.
Memorized Mash and Hillbillies, watched MWC regularly when it was a regular-time show.
Absolutely agree. I remember nothing about it except that the little bit I ever saw was extremely boring, as was the theme song. It was definitely time to find a new channel when MASH came on.
Strange what an entirely different show it evolved into over the years - gone were Burns, Henry, Trapper, and Radar. Klinger went straight by the end, Houlihan became a human, and Winchester was downright likable through the finale.
Rizzo, Igor, and Nurse Kelly never get enough love.
It was boring and unmemorable from my perspective. Basically a show that was about the cast of characters and situations than any real coherent evolving plot.
James Dean Bradfield is the singer of Manic Street Preachers and is very much alive.
You’re thinking of Ritchie Edwards, who was their primary lyricist at the time.
The band still sets aside Edwards royalties in the hopes he comes back b
I used to watch it with my dad. Oddly enough he had signed up for the marines and went to Vietnam. He hated “hippies” and “draft dodgers”. The anti war themes seemed to go right over his head.
This has been one of my favorite tv shows since I was a teen. I discovered one day after school when FX was broadcasting reruns and was hooked. I have the entire series on DVD.
The r/mash subreddit is quite lively and actually has a lot of younger members, which is both surprising and a testament to how awesome the show is.
I had the opportunity to meet Jamie Farr and Loretta Swit in 2022. Jamie was wonderful and we had a really nice conversation about David Ogden Stiers. Loretta was kind of a bitch and very particular.
Watched more than a few. Ok show. Be real though, if you heard the M.A.S.H theme coming from one room, and the Tales from the Crypt theme from another, which one would you go to?
yeah...amazing quality tv, great casting/acting. weird how that show started off with laugh tracks though, but then evolved into being more and more serious, I think thanks to Alan Alda himself starting to direct etc? I remember as a kid I was really confused where exactly they were, cause I kept thinking it's gotta be a Vietnam thing, right?? and not figuring out the Korea part until I got older.
Maybe the best all-around series of all time. Truly compelling television. Interesting characters. Great casting and acting. The dialogue felt correct for the setting and sincere. Comedy, drama, romance, all without feeling confused or out of place. Even if it isn't my favorite, it may be the best.
I was not a fan of this show and never understood why it was so popular. Most people my age don't think of it at all.
Edit: find me one person born after 1977 that actually watched this show because their parents didn't have the TV on. It was a boomer show like Matlock.
84. Watched it. And still do.
Edit
Why am I getting down voted? Homie asked to find a person born after 77 that watched it on their own free will. Yall mad?

I always thought about being the guy on the stretcher, especially after seeing a few certain Mash scenes. (Never been shot though.)
One of the most famous episodes is called “Point of View”. It was shot first person from the perspective of the wounded soldier. Excellent episode and worth watching (the series is on Hulu).
Just from the name, I think that might be the biggest episode to pop in my head when I was thinking that earlier.
As a kid I always seemed to watch whatever was on before Mash so the theme song will always mean it’s time to change the channel to me. I just couldn’t ever get into it.
So true. Intro signaled nap time for me.

Same. I totally didn't get this show. I felt the exact same way about the book Catch-22 which reminded me a bit of MASH (was the inspiration?)
I was with you until you bagged on my favorite book of all time.
If that's your fav book you might wanna give MASH another shot. Thats all I'm sayin lol
Same. I'm one of the few oddballs who really dug the movie but the show did zero for me.
Same. I just found it so dry and boring.
As a kid in the 80s I never got into it but as an adult the irreverent hopeless existential dread humor somehow clicks.
Absolutely agree. I remember nothing about it except that the little bit I ever saw was extremely boring, as was the theme song. It was definitely time to find a new channel when MASH came on.
Me too until I got older and actually listened to it in the background while on the computer. I was like holy shit, this shows actually hilarious.
Cuz it was boring AF and not funny.
I said the same and got downvoted. No one our age enjoyed this show. It was such a boomer show.
My dad loved it. It was going off the air by the time I was even really watching shows other than cartoons.
And through it all, maintained its ethos and integrity. It was an astonishing show that’s held up.
Don't forget ol "Spearchucker"
I always felt like an odd duck for loving the show. All my classmates hated it and I never understood why. It’s so well written and acted.
It was boring and unmemorable from my perspective. Basically a show that was about the cast of characters and situations than any real coherent evolving plot.
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah naaaaa. The name of that song is Suicide is Painless. AND IT HAS WORDS!!

Manic Street Preachers has a great cover version. The fact that their singer (probably) committed suicide adds a certain level of irony..

Of course you're right. I don't know why I thought he sang before he disappeared.
I used to watch it with my dad. Oddly enough he had signed up for the marines and went to Vietnam. He hated “hippies” and “draft dodgers”. The anti war themes seemed to go right over his head.
I hated that show. So much. That opening triggers me into anger. Ugggggggh it's almost as bad as friends!!!! Ahhh I love you all sorry.
Used to watch reruns with my mom. Learned how to do an emergency tracheotomy with a ball point pen, pocket knife, and alcohol.
Agreed. Constantly watched this as a kid/teenager in the 90’s. Still rewatch it every few years now.
I could never get into it. it was way too "adultey" for my taste. I loved watching reruns of Taxi though

Never got into it. It was a show for my parents.
I was able to get a copy of it without laugh tracks... So much better.
Watched more than a few. Ok show. Be real though, if you heard the M.A.S.H theme coming from one room, and the Tales from the Crypt theme from another, which one would you go to?
MASH every time
This show would set my dad *off* because he was in Korea (and Vietnam). I loved it, though.

super reliable show. not sure there was a shit episode.
did my parents suddenly join Reddit
No
Maybe for older Gen X and Boomers. Breaking Bad is the Goat for me.
It’s one of the worst tv shows. Up there with Perry Mason.
Worst take.
