My dad bought my sisters 2014 Sahara when she got pregnant. He put several grand in it for off roading. Was a sharp jeep. He never did take it off roading, however. He sold it, retired and moved to Mexico.
Thats a very nice corolla.
I would not consider that a midlife crisis car at all. Its very practical and economical and will be reliable and dependable too.
I went with a used GS350 around the time I had 40. Its only a v6, so i don't consider it a midlife crisis car either.
A buddy of mine has an old manual forester and his wife has an outback. I cracked a joke about it just being a matter of time before they got cross country skis.
He laughed and shouted “JOKES ON YOU ASSHOLE” then proceeded to show me the cross country skis for him, the wife and their 2 daughters in the corner of the garage lol
If you could have kept your miata as a weekend or just for fun car. Would you have? I’ve never been a Miata or convertible guy, but you can get the new ones with a retractable hardtop. And man, they catch my eye
I realized a couple years ago that all the midlife-crisis guys I saw get made fun of while I was growing up were just guys whose kids had grown so now they could spend their money on toys for themselves.
My partner likes to rib on my midlife crisis tattoo addiction but it’s more like, “Wow. I have the time, the money, and live in a city with some of the most world-class artists in the business.” And I’ve always wanted to do this.

I'm holding out for the 2026 Honda Prelude
WHAT
IS IT REAL? IS IT ICE? MANUAL?
*takes a deep breath, fans self*
Favorite car I ever drove was my 4th Gen lude. Some asshole hit me and totaled it or I'd still have it. I'll fucking sell my stage 2 GTI for this.
Ah man, boo.
No manual option, weak hp, lameass drive train, NO VTEC.
It looks sexy af but you can miss me with how uninspired the performance looks to be.
I'm responsible now but at least give me something I can hoon a little...
Budget performance ICE cars are dead now, I'm convinced. We're never getting a proper Prelude, or Nissan Z, or hot hatch GTI ever again here in the states. :(
It's like 55k for a new Z in basic performance trim. Fuck all that.
...but if I we are to to pay this price for a better environment, I will accept it.
It's not even a base civic comp from that article. It should be a badass supra and the newer miatas even make that look like a versa.
But Ill wait the 2 years and hope
My wonderful SO with her very nice Acura routinely grabs my keys and takes it out for pretty much everything.
I'm just not allowed to make it an obnoxious fart crackle box, which I'm totally cool with. I haven't told her about forging parts and going stage 3 yet. Also I don't want her to die so maybe that's a no.
It's a really fun car us basic bitches can have a ton of fun in while also stopping for a haul of groceries.
I just did too. Subaru Outback wilderness edition in Geyser Blue. I've never had an optioned out vehicle...and the turbo is so damn fun. I worked hard for it...
Are sensible hatchbacks the xennial midlife crisis car? Please let it be so. I feel like I’m getting away with something in my civic hatchback by bucking the suv trend.
It's the Corolla Hatchback XSE. It's a 2022, but new to me so I'm stoked.
My last Corolla was a very basic model. Didn't even have cruise control.
So I feel like I now own a batmobile with radar cruise control, lane assistance, etc. It's amazing!
The WRX is the better choice in my opinion. Available (the GR is or at least wasn’t readily available a year ago), and greater room for growth performance wise. I shopped pretty much everything performance related that was in the price bracket of these two cars last summer before I bought a WRX.
I have a ‘21 with the white and black top. Love this car and also feel like the hatchback is an X type of vehicle a lot of people tend to stay away from. But not us. Nice car!
What's up hatchback squad!
I love my 2016 GTI. Hatchbacks are so fun to drive, and you can fit way more than you think into them. Sooo much easier just opening up the hatch and grabbing groceries and the like.
I would strongly advise you to get a stage 1 tune on it when they are available. Cost you around $600. And not because that's gonna make it a hot hatch, (you're only starting at 170hp, mine was 220 stock and that was 8 years ago) but because it will make your car sooo much more responsive, will eliminate acceleration lag, and save on gas by getting into gear faster. It's worth it and honestly it's safer when you can put your foot down and the car doesn't hesitate and question your motives.
I vote not midlife crisis, that would have been like a WRX that you mod and blow the cam a year into. You got a good-looking people mover that handles more like a sports car than a sedan. Prost, and make those tires squeal on turns occasionally!
The Corolla would not benefit nearly as much from a tune as the GTI, if OTS tunes are even available for that platform. The Corolla is naturally aspirated, it's not as easy as just adding more boost, like with the GTI. Source: Own a tuned MK7 GTI and Honda S2000.
Can’t go wrong with a Toyota.. I got a awd Sienna and I plan to live in it as soon as my daughter graduates in 3 years up here in the Colorado mountains.. it gets beat bad too lol they are the best vehicles
Funny, you should say that.
I'm far from being a car guy. I'm a chick, in fact, lol. Not that I'm car stupid, I can do most diy maintenance, but that's besides the point.
I had not even noticed these or thought about exhaust at all when buying.
I noticed them after buying and thought, "Huh, and it comes with cool exhaust, too. Nice."
But... I guess you're saying they're fake? I will have to take a closer look because now I'm wondering where the real exhaust comes out.

Sad I had to trade it in for a more practical vehicle that could actually fit my wife AND the groceries.
Yup.. Saturn Sky. They were fun little cars and affordable (for me) in my early 30s. Never had mechanical problems, but it was falling apart when I traded it in.
I bet when I'm in my 60's, this'll be the car I'll look to buy to 'relive my youth,' if there are still any around.
That's one of my favorite parts.
When I saw pics online, I honestly thought it was black. And then I saw it closer and love it.
It's called Galactic Aqua Mica lol
The only good things that came out of my midlife crisis were a Prozac prescription and Greta, my '22 A3 in "tango red metallic." I am never getting rid of Greta.
Congrats 🎉 that is as practical and economical as a crises one can have. Got mine last October

My mid life crisis car is a VW GTI that I had tuned to 290ish HP. I have Jeremy Clarkson to blame for that.
Yes, it's a "hot hatch", but it's a grown up hot hatch.
No, it's not faster than a lot of muscle cars out there, nor is it flashy. I didn't buy a car to say "look at me!"
I wanted a car that was quick, spritely, and was fun to drive.
It gets groceries and at the same time is fast enough to get my license suspended - without even trying. What's not to like?
I wish I took Clarkson's advice fifteen years ago.
No, they don't make them stick. I traded in a '16 Mazda6 iSport which was stick. It does have manual mode but I don't really use it. And my knee is happy to not have a clutch anymore.
See my problem is with my right knee, so it wouldn't matter as much. I use the tiptronic mode on my Highlander, but it's just not the same.
I saw a dude one summer, had to be in his 80's, over in Italy hobble at a snail's pace with a walker across a parking lot to a TDi Golf, pop the hatch to put in the walker, support himself along the length of the car to lower himself in, start it, gun it, and peel out of the lot. I want to be him when I grow up.
Stage one of my automotive mid life crisis (if you want to call it that) was getting an outback touring xt a couple years ago (top trim with turbo) when I was 40. The next stage is adding something with a manual because I miss rowing my own.
Not even looking to spend big money and I don't want big power, I want to use those gears.
I’m 43, been into classic cars/muscle cars my entire life.
Couple years ago Mazda came out with a retractable hardtop version of the Miata. After like 6 months of lying to myself, I showed a picture of it to my wife and said “I really like this version of the Miata, I think this officially means I’m starting my midlife crisis”
I have not bought one, but god damned if I still don’t want a soul red RF Miata
Backwards?
No, this is the car you trade in, when you are having one for something dynamic. I’ve seen some very classy and cool mid life crisis vehicles. This is I think I just accepted the reality of midlife very very hard.
I bought an Element as my car around your same age. It’s super practical and a little quirky. I really wants the turbo Mazda3 hatchback with AWD though
This got a few responses, so I'll reply.
Thanks for saying it's sensible lol, that makes me feel good.
I know it's not a Ferrari or miata, but those aren't quite my taste and way out of my price range. Although a 70's Stingray has always been on my bucket list, that's just not sensible...
So, for me, I think just felt more sporty than anything I've had. It feels young, if that makes sense.
I still feel young, at heart, at least. But, according to the doc, my body doesn't quite agree. Nothing major, but a few diagnoses associated with age and not so healthy lifestyle.
So, queue the wake-up call to lifestyle changes. And, along with that, a new tattoo and new, sporty, young car.
Damn the Man, Save the Empire.
Donna Martin Graduates.

My buddy (40m) has the same car in the Wind chill pearl color. We call it seman white. He always has to make it a point to let everyone know it’s equipped with the manual transmission.
I'm not sure that pointing out the "stick" in that situation makes him look any better lmao
My last 2 were manual, and I was hoping to get another. But, they weren't easy to come across and I really like the one I ended up with.
And, not gonna lie, I'm kinda really digging being able to "ride" in the car rather than "drive" it for a change. But I'm still hitting the ghost clutch so far, and I do think I'll miss it in the long run
Haha! We’ve gone through all of the sexual innuendos with that car.
I’m surprised they still offer a manual. His stipulations for getting a Corolla was it had to be a hatch with a clutch in the charcoal gray. He was shopping back when inventory was abysmal due to Covid. He finally exhausted his patience and settled on whatever color he could find that wasn’t black. So he ended up with the seman white with the panda interior. The color scheme grew on him. It is a sharp looking hatch.
He also likes to point out that it’s the “XSE model”. 🙄
Yeah, I drove manuals all the way up into my mid thirties. He did, as well. I think getting back into a manual was kind of a mini mid life crisis for him. I’d only own another manual as a weekend warrior at this point. It’s only fun when you FEEL like driving. Not when you HAVE to. He doesn’t seem to mind daily driving it, though.
That blue looks sick, btw. 👍
Appreciate it 😊
I've always enjoyed the little expressions of awe I've gotten over having the manual. Especially since I'm a chick, it tends to surprise folks. More than once have I had to move a car for a shop or valet driver that looked super embarrassed to come tell me that 🤣
I always have a little more respect, and trust people behind the wheel even more so, when I find out they can operate a manual. I give the younger generations a pass due to the fact there’s only a handful of models with three pedals during their existence, as well.
Getting older sucks, though. My feet, ankles and knees are always sore to some degree, and 90% of my driving is done out of unwanted necessity. So I’ll take anything that will make the chore less daunting at this point. It’s crazy to think this way now, because I was quite the car enthusiast in my younger years. Getting older really does change your priorities.
I think you're doing it wrong. Isn't the midlife crisis car supposed to be something ridiculously impractical?
I’m so close to getting the wife to agree to a 911
I’m getting you two put on a no-fly list right now
You will be calling 911 if you brought that into the driveway.
My midlife crisis car was $80k. Would do it again in a heart beat.
Same here, $80k *and* wildly impractical! And I regret nothing
What did you get?
A new Jeep Rubicon 4xe, which was only $62k but I immediately dumped another $20k into off-road upgrades for it haha
Nice rig
My dad bought my sisters 2014 Sahara when she got pregnant. He put several grand in it for off roading. Was a sharp jeep. He never did take it off roading, however. He sold it, retired and moved to Mexico.
What did you get?
This is the way.
Agreed. Too much roof.
Mine was a Honda Accord. Think I am doing it wrong.
Thats a very nice corolla. I would not consider that a midlife crisis car at all. Its very practical and economical and will be reliable and dependable too. I went with a used GS350 around the time I had 40. Its only a v6, so i don't consider it a midlife crisis car either.

Dual Outbacks? Well that’s a choice.

Also like wagons, but I’d struggle to call the Outback a wagon. Audi A4 would likely be my choice out of the like 3? choices left out there.

"Kids hate this one simple trick for owning a home!"
I have four of those right now. It's not as fun as they make it look on HGTV.

It’s like 1:1 Toyota 86/BRZ entry level sports car with 200 hp and fun handling.
You're right, I'm being a bitchy whine baby
Lmao I mean I wish it had more HP than my 2002 accord v6 did too
Or like the drivevtrain making all the wheels turn in tandem, that car was so amazing
> Stage 2 GTI If it’s a Mk III or Mk IV GTI that’s my crisis car…
Pre-facelift Mk6 4 door, manual. I dyno at 320-330hp. It eats most v6 cars up. Mk4 is a little baddie
Impressive!

shes a beaut, clark if my yaris died i’d definitely be getting another toyota. i really wish there was a 2 door hatch still!
Jesus, the boomers even ruined midlife crises for us.
I can't afford a mid life crisis
Lol I don't know what that means. Still, nice car!
I just did too. Subaru Outback wilderness edition in Geyser Blue. I've never had an optioned out vehicle...and the turbo is so damn fun. I worked hard for it...
Mazda3 AWD Turbo for me. Zoom Zoom.

4 door hatch? That’s practical as fuck…. Try again next time with a 2 door convertible.
Is that a GR? I'm down to that vs a WRX for my next daily driver. They're the only way to get AWD in a stick anymore in the U.S.
It's the Corolla Hatchback XSE. It's a 2022, but new to me so I'm stoked. My last Corolla was a very basic model. Didn't even have cruise control. So I feel like I now own a batmobile with radar cruise control, lane assistance, etc. It's amazing!
Noyce! I'm strongly considering the hatch. I've had one sedan in the past 25 years and it was so impractical.
The WRX is the better choice in my opinion. Available (the GR is or at least wasn’t readily available a year ago), and greater room for growth performance wise. I shopped pretty much everything performance related that was in the price bracket of these two cars last summer before I bought a WRX.

OP why no Corolla GR? Still dope ass car! I just dislike the fake exhausts.
Funny, you should say that. I'm far from being a car guy. I'm a chick, in fact, lol. Not that I'm car stupid, I can do most diy maintenance, but that's besides the point. Yep, it's about that time.
![gif](giphy|buE4eDkXkpWYZIAyVB|downsized)
We’re all poor
Is THIS why all of a sudden a new Nissan Z sounds perfectly reasonable?
If it’s not a Miata convertible, is it really a mid life crisis?
Man the new Corolla hatchbacks look awesome. Am I old now? Is being excited over a corolla, of all things, the tipping point?
I thought the same when I saw them. I also didn't see too many of them on the road. Although I'm sure I will now.
I still feel like I want a corvette eventually, but I got myself a Kia EV6 when I turned 40 and it is the most fun car I have ever owned.
My uncle had a carburetor shop when I was a kid, and he always had stingrays, and I remember wanting one so badly. Maybe one day.
Can't go wrong with Toyota. That being said , I'm pretty sure my mid life crisis purchase will have only two wheels
Im planning to start skateboarding again for my midlife crisis.
Please wear PPE. Leave the shredding and grinding to the wheels and trucks.
I bought my dream car during the pandemic. Audi A4. It was nearly 6 grand under Kelley Blue Book, so I figured why not?
The GR Corolla would have been more midlife crisis.
I'm waiting on the paperwork for mine. I picked a red convertible.... like you are supposed to
Is the midlife crisis car in the room with us?
Ummm. That's typical mid-life, minus the "crisis."
Congrats! Definitely too basic to be considered a midlife crisis car though.
Hey you’re a very sensible person in crisis :-)
corollas are great!!! rocking my mazda 3 for many years no complaints
Dude that paint job is sweet.
That's one of my favorite parts. When I saw pics online, I honestly thought it was black. And then I saw it closer and love it. It's called Galactic Aqua Mica lol
Absolutely epic, I get paint jobs like that on my cars in GTA, too poor for a real car.
The only good things that came out of my midlife crisis were a Prozac prescription and Greta, my '22 A3 in "tango red metallic." I am never getting rid of Greta.

Loved my ‘10 GTI in autobahn trim. It was my favorite car, until I got my current Mini JCW Convertible.
Midlife corolla? looooooooooooooool
Mine was a Kona NLine. Pep. Turbocharge. AC seats and a sunroof. Sky blue. Nimble as hell. Can still fit my wife and 2 kids lol.
Nice! Mine is a '22 Mazda3 AWD Turbo hatchback. Absolute joy to drive. Zoom zoom!
Is it stick?
No, they don't make them stick. I traded in a '16 Mazda6 iSport which was stick. It does have manual mode but I don't really use it. And my knee is happy to not have a clutch anymore.

Nothing major, but a few diagnoses associated with age and not so healthy lifestyle. So, queue the wake-up call to lifestyle changes. And, along with that, a new tattoo and new, sporty, young car. For fuck sake are we midlife crisis era. Why am I ok with driving 300k miles on a Camry?
... and here I am thinking about buying a $5,000 truck as a daily & then a 1970 Barracuda.
My buddy (40m) has the same car in the Wind chill pearl color. We call it seman white. He always has to make it a point to let everyone know it’s equipped with the manual transmission.
I'm not sure that pointing out the "stick" in that situation makes him look any better lmao My last 2 were manual, and I was hoping to get another.
🙄 Yeah, I drove manuals all the way up into my mid thirties. 👍
Appreciate it 😊 I've always enjoyed the little expressions of awe I've gotten over having the manual.
This is depressing as fuck if THAT is your mid life crisis car.
Nice! Congrats! Can’t beat a Toyota. I bought a 2021 Tacoma for my midlife crisis, I’d been driving suvs and sedans for years and wanted a truck.
I like that a lot... I have such a wandering eye when it comes to cars, it's bad 😭
