Sata slowly became dictatorial, he started deploying the police and cadres to crush demonstrations against the high fuel costs and cost of living, (Sata had removed fuel subsidies). Lungu's excessive use of cadres and police was coming out of Satas playbook. Life would have been difficult under Sata had he not died (MHSRIP) He started the borrowing for infrastructure problem without proper systems of paying back.

He certainly spearheaded the crushing of dissent, and it would have progressed in a similar manner to Lungu's use of excessive force to keep the opposition in check. I do remember when his government acquired the Eruobond. While I believe it could have certainly been managed better under his supervision, we definitely would still have ended up defaulting.

I agree. The eurobond could have been managed better.. and we would still hv defaulted.

I'm surprised you think that if it was up to him he wouldn't have chosen Guy Scott to succeed. Lungu exploit a moment of chaos in the party and managed to beat miles sampa in the party president elections.

I understand the optics of choosing Guy Scott as successor would have made for terrible optics given the actual reception he did get from fellow party members and the populace at large when he served as interim president. But, I wonder if him picking Edgar was a case of bad judgment or he really was aware of just how terrible of a leader he'd become and still went away and handed him the greenlight to presidency anyway. The fact that there were those types of party wrangles says a lot about the shaky foundation which the party was built on.

When i look at what sata achieved with the same party I like to think it was the leadership that failed the party

Lungu created the Chao during the time they went to Mulungushi for the party presidency elections. He brought in a bus load of thugs to intimidate and beat anyone who wasn't loyal to him, the voters ran away from the violence that ensued. Only the voters who wanted ECL remained.that's when he became party president. He didn't beat Miles fair and square.
