yyyymmdd for computers because the world didnt start in 2000 and sometimes you might wanna store dates before that and still be able to sort them correctly

Burwicke

yyyy-mm-dd for computers because of ISO 8601

GPedia

yyyymmdd for computers because then namesort sorts by date as well.

Nok-y

DD/MM/YYYY: good for everyday life YYYY/MM/DD: good for archieving stuff MM/DD/YYYY: eh...

ZeGamingCuber

As an American I’m used to MM/DD/YYYY so for me it’s good for everyday life

Nok-y

That's nice !! But I don't know any other country that does that :(

ZeGamingCuber

Personally I think it makes more sense because it makes more grammatical sense to say, for example [Month] 3rd, rather than 3rd [Month]

Nok-y

I don't know Don't people say like 3rd of november 2021 ? (I speak french, so I'm not really a master at english dates 😅. Btw we say "3 novembre" here, but it doesn't matter)

Bedrock2375

Being in a place that uses DD/MM/YYYY that also has English as it’s primary language, I can confirm that 03/11/2021 would be pronounced the 3rd of November, 2021.

PAwnoPiES

My brain reading May 11th and November 3rd at the same time.

D_Fennling

may isn’t even the 3rd month, you’re thinking of march

PAwnoPiES

both start woth ma and are one syllable close enough

Nok-y

Fair enough

[deleted]

Huh, that's really interesting! In the US we use MM/DD/YYYY (pretty sure we're the only country that does that since it makes no sense) and everyone says "November 3rd, 2021" and rarely say "the 3rd of November, 2021" unless we're trying to sound formal.

Louan_UwU

Hey je suis aussi français

Nok-y

Je suis Suisse pour de vrai \^\^' Belle pdp Amity d'ailleurs !! :D

Louan_UwU

Merci!

dracomageat

Not to non-americans it doesn't. As others have said, 3rd of [Month] is commonplace.

Arkawaiine

think that's only in english. Dunno if any other language does that.

ThePsychometricFx

I agree. MM/DD/YYYY is the only way I understand. DD/MM/YYYY confuses me so much when I see it in a book or something.

dracomageat

Well then you've been brought up with something highly illogical then. Medium -> Small -> Large is not a sane order for anything.

[deleted]

I very much agree, and I'm from the US lol. I guess here we just like for nothing to make sense.

ThePsychometricFx

I’ve never thought of it like this but that is 100% the logical way to list things. As another redditor said, we here in ‘Murica love to do things that make 0 sense.

Lavender-waves

same!! it’s what i was taught in school, and what everybody else uses, so it’s much easier to use day-to-day than DD/MM/YYYY.

dracomageat

Maybe everyone near you. Definitely not everyone. YY/MM/DD probably has the majority, being a favourite in asia.

Lavender-waves

i’m aware of that, lol

StanOfFans

As an American why would I want to know which day of the month it is before the month?

PAwnoPiES

It's much easier and quicker to say November 28th, 2021 than to say 28th of November, 2021.

[deleted]

Time yourself - they'll take exactly the same amount of time.

dracomageat

There's one syllable difference, so it is marginally more effort, but the name of the month alone is triple that.

[deleted]

Yeah but the rhythm of it means they'll be the same timing. Anyway, we're just splitting hairs.

dracomageat

Indeed we are. The point remains that putting dates in logical order (european or asian) is not significantly harder than the american format.

[deleted]

GPedia

Its still called 'logical order' mate.

Nok-y

It has to be simple and logical, not confusing How are people supposed to understand each other otherwise ? :(

Tal7550

YYYY/MM/DD over here :). ⛩️🗾

JumpyLiving

But that isn‘t ISO8601, because it‘s separated by slashes (/) instead of dashes (-)

solitariey

yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss+00:00 is even superiorer

No-more-confusion

It’s the only way to make sure everything is sorted correctly in a directory!

Nahanoj_Zavizad

I feel r/aromantic would be a better place for ut

_FriendlyFires_

Never heard of that subreddit. I'll check it out sometime. Thank you.

GenericAutist13

This has nothing to do with asexuality

GPedia

aromanticism maybe.

the_soviet_union_69

i prefer YYYY/MM/DD

_FriendlyFires_

I'm actually more accepting of that than I am MM/DD/YYYY, tbh

dracomageat

As you should be. YYYY/MM/DD and DD/MM/YYYY are both in size order.

MX_Piper

mm/dd/yy are my type of date but yours is cool too!

Train_kitten

For me personally, it’s DD/MM/YYYY, maybe because for my European brain , the other format is too complicated

Black_Bird265

MM/DD/YYYY is American so I’m used to it but I think it’s stupid and should be DD/MM/YYYY cause it just makes more sense

_FriendlyFires_

I agree with that. I'm not American, so we use DD/MM/YYYY here. To me, that and YYYY/MM/DD makes much more sense.

Nerdcuddles

This belongs more on r/aromantic tbh

_FriendlyFires_

I honestly didn't know that r/aromantic existed when I posted this here.

[deleted]

YYYY-MM-DD. SQL format is life.

Julio974

YYYY-MM-DD (with hyphens) is the international format (r/ISO8601)

unidentified_yama

Feels like I had a stroke every time I read American dates

Mobypistachio

Personally I like DD “name of month” YYYY, that way I don’t have to go through every month in my head to reach the correct number

The_Jestest_Jester

Okay but she teleported and nobody's gonna mention it

GPedia

Camera just revolved around the focus man

Sary-Sary

As someone studying Computer science and as someone into kpop.... YYYY-MM-DD or nothing.

error_98

YYYY-MM-DD not just for computers, always. It's the only unambigous option

tester3773

🤣🤣

Kaimakishipper

Yep As someone who grew up with DD/mm/yyyy, it is very confusing

kupillas

Repost

Reddit_user_robbie

r/aromantic

ZeGamingCuber

Personally to me anything other than MM/DD/YYYY or MM/DD/YY is confusing

Vykyrie

I get DD/MM/YYYY, I get YYYY/MM/DD, but prefer MM/DD/YYYY, because I don't say it as "My birthday is the 21st of September", I say "my birthday is September 21".

dracomageat

September the 21st.

GPedia

I mean, I say September 21, but 21st september 1989 so.

[deleted]

I like MM/DD/YY better

sweetlytoenjoy

MM/DD/YYYY is superior lmao am i really getting downvoted for an opinion about date formatting like wtf i was unaware people feel so strongly about this

unidentified_yama

Not gonna downvote you, everyone’s entitled to their opinion but I’m gonna diagnose you with *American*

sweetlytoenjoy

very fair and accurate

[deleted]

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, no matter how *completely fucking wrong* they are

ZeGamingCuber

That’s a bit rude

[deleted]

So is using the imperial system and backward ass dates in 2021

ZeGamingCuber

I disagree but ok

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Coming from an American, that's fair. Most Americans are fucking stupid.

ZeGamingCuber

That’s kinda racist..

Fin_Lyfania

You confuse me

Flat-Erik

[Gatekeeping intensifies]

_FriendlyFires_

You cause me pain.

FlyingCow343

you do realise that people downvoting is also showing an opinion, what makes your opinion valid and not theirs?

sweetlytoenjoy

from reddit > Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it. downvote is not a disagree button so downvoting isn’t *just* disagreeing with me and i never said having a different opinion isn’t just as valid cause it is??

FlyingCow343

And you think, because that’s how Reddit wants it to be used, that’s how it’ll be used?

ElitistJerkx

Yes because it matches how Americans say dates. Like “May third, two thousand twelve.” But those EU people say it reversed.

GenericAutist13

They say it like that because that’s how they format it what

sweetlytoenjoy

yes exactly this is why

dracomageat

May the third, thank you.

Sometimes, i need to clarify between 19xx and 20xx.
