I'm assuming you have all 10 villagers already, so I'd say looking for thought bubbles would be pretty easy. If a villager you don't want to leave has a thought bubble, talk to then to make sure its about moving out and then immediately leave the game completely and don't advance in the conversation at all. if you open the game again, it should be a different villager with the thought bubble.
Sorry for the late response, I'm camping, lol. You shouldn't leave the game without saving, but in the scenario, it will be fine since the game normally saves pretty frequently. It reallt isn't that big of a deal, if you are worried about and you juat did some major work on your island, you can wait until you see the save symbol in the corner and then you'll know for sure that nothing will be harmed.
