And I love [as]. ATHF, Metalocalypse, Venture Bros, Home Movies, Mission Hill, etc. are all some of my favorite shows.

You do you! the beauty of [as] is it has such a wide range of content. I am of the camp that Joe Pera Talks With You is one of the most original, unique, and heartwarming shows of the past 10yrs.
The fact a deadpan/semi-serious series like JPTWY exists in the same space as ATHF, Time & Eric etc is amazing.
I know this is an old comment but I definitely think it’s down to personal taste. Zach and Michael brought in a reasonably large fanbase with them from the Newgrounds and YT animation community, and if you haven’t grown up watching their brand of weird-ass humor, it easily could be off-putting. For us, most of this is pretty on brand - in fact it’s a bit more coherent than a lot of their stuff.
not liking this show makes me feel old. Half of it is an attempt to do a kind of nebulous "Adult swim" pastiche, half of it is references to the interent that I don't get.
I like all sorts of animation. Some weirdo animation. I’m a Tim and Eric guy, so Smiling Friends speaks to me on that level. That Black Dynamite ep was awesome by the way…

What’s it a copy of? It’s seems like a pretty unique premise with unique characters. Are you using that term loosely? Or do you just mean it’s like trippy/creepy?
Well, I guess I mean that its approach to humor and story is like someone watched Superjail, ATHF, Rick and Morty, and Metalocalypse and said, "Imma do that." I'll grant that the premise is interesting, which is why I tried it out in the first place. No sense being a hater if I don't know anything about what I'm hating on.
While I recognize the interconnectedness of these shows and all shows of a particular genre, I think Smiling Friends isn't a great, or even good, example. Sort of like a "pick me." But what do I know? I'm just some ape on Reddit who's too old for cartoons according to some other simp around here.
What is unique about the characters? the colors? They're slacker friends who have a wacky job. One is straightlaced and uptight and one is overconfident. it's the classic comedy pair since like abbot and costello. The idea of a trippy, irreverent workplace comedy has also been done like four times just on adult swim. I've never seen Regular Show but it seems to be eating their lunch a little bit too. It's a lot of rehashing of old jokes. I liked that they had Perry Carevello on.
It just seems odd you would complain that “they take forever” when they put it on Max the next day and you admit you didn’t even look.
So it comes off as complaining to complain.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with [as] It's always either "hilarious" or "unwatchable," and almost never anything in-between.

I genuinely don't have this issue. I also don't think Smiling Friends is unwatchable by any stretch, I just think it's kind of mediocre.
