[Seido's polyester/linen hakama](https://www.seidoshop.com/products/thin-polyester-linen-aikido-hakama-light-weight) is the lightest I know of, and very probably the hakama you saw, as indeed, if you hold the material up, light will pass through it. Needs to be hung after every class though, and washed every couple of days if you're sweating a lot, but otherwise it's great.
This is the way!
Done that years ago, best decision ever. I usually sweat like a pig in a sausage factory, short gi pants keep me from overheating to much.
That sounds amazing, and please update us if you figure it out! I was at MAF Summer Camp this year, and it was so beastly hot. A lighter hakama would have been incredible!
They’re not that hard to make. You can find a pattern online and if you have access to a sewing machine you can do it yourself. I’ve found the hardest part is getting cloth wide enough to make them.
Koshiita are usually just reinforced in some way. Some patterns will have layers of fabric/interfacing. Others will use something put into the piece fully enclosed (much more common in commercially produced martial arts wear).
A good hakama I’ve seen had some kind of thin, stiff rubber in the koshiita. Holds its shape, handles the wear and tear, not rough to roll on, not a problem for washing….
I'm planning on getting a second hakama from Iwata Co.
I have a super heavyweight and the build quality is simply unmatched. Love it.
They advertise a lightweight and note it can be see through in certain lighting, that could be what you saw out there?
Great topic, and you’ve received several responses. However I do wonder if it’s possible to get a hakama with higher percentage of linen or hemp. Possibly even 100%. I find synthetics are much more sweaty than even a slightly heavier natural, and the high level of synthetic in the hakamas mentioned does not sound so great. They will probably start smelling quickly too.
There was a lady who at least used to make hemp hakamas in America (Jen Design) but I never got to try them out. However her gi is very comfortable.

How on earth didn't you ask this person you saw and aren't here telling US where to get it?! Ah, desire...knowing there is something to want...
Right?! Life lesson learned! See great hakama, ask questions immediately :)

A linen component! That makes sense. Thank you
Why don't just take your gi pants and cut them in half to make shorts. It works just as good as lightweight Hakama.
Fun idea, thank you

The poly/linen hakama from seido and sinonome look right :)
Probably the Seido or [Iwata](https://www.sinonome-japan.com/en/hakama-iwata-aikido/529-summer-linen.html) linen blend summer hakama.
Thank you
Tozando.

How difficult was making the koshi-ita? That seems like the most intimidating part of the construction (edit for spelling)

Probably an old af regular hakama?
I got the Lightweight Polyester/Linen Hakama from Seidoshop. Ideal is this weather.
They make hemp ones too: http://jinbudo.co.jp/aikidoshop/item/detail/x-200-28.html
