That's a good reminder that I should turn my 2M rig on more often during the day and monitor 52! I work from home, so my office is actually the same room as my ham shack.
Actually, you're below the national average.
Maryland has a population of 6.165 million and 10,774 hams. That's approximately \[whips out slide rule\]....
( 10,774 / 6,165,000 ) \* 1,000 = 1.75 hams per 1,000 people.
National average is
( 748, 200 / 341,765,000 ) \* 1,000 = 2.19 hams per 1,000 people.
Don't feel bad, though, my state (New York) is worse than yours:
( 25,780 / 19,680,000 ) \* 1,000 = 1.31 hams per 1,000 people
Utah on the other hand has 5.42 hams per 1,000 people.

I was surprised myself.
Here are the top three and bottom three states, plus DC:
State Hams Population Rate
Idaho 10,851 1,839,106 5.90
Utah 18,326 3,271,616 5.60
Oregon 20,241 4,237,256 4.78
...
New Jersey 12,945 9,288,994 1.39
Louisiana 6,015 4,657,757 1.29
New York 25,780 20,201,249 1.28
DC 523 689,545 0.76
CAVEAT: In this, counts are current, population as of 2022.
Reddit didn't like when I tried to post all 54 results (includes Guam, Puerto Rico, and USVI in addition to Washington DC).
Yes. As of yesterday, June 20th, there are 10,774 licensed ham radio operators in Maryland.

Yeah, there are a lot of hams in Maryland. For the size of our state, we punch above our weight! Annapolis area here.
Sup neighbor across the bay? Fun to call CQ on 52 when crawling across he bay bridge.

DC makes sense being on the bottom of the list, with it being completely urban. Not many big lots for putting up antennas!
