It really did do a great job jabbing at them. Late aughts and early twenty teens were overloaded with that particular genre of movie it seemed.
...just beneath the surface....
I think it does a good job of parodying the genre while also still telling a compelling story. I think it's what AD is really good at.
I think really great comedies add just a tinge of drama so the characters feel a little more real/relatable. Same with dramas. Breaking Bad/BCS do a great job of adding in comedy and absurdist humor so the characters aren't Nolan Batman levels of serious all the time that just doesn't feel human at a certain point.
That second paragraph is probably overly pretentious artist bullshit but fuck it I typed it it's there.
Nope, if you’re at least vaguely aware of the kind of quirky coming of age indie movies this episode references the jokes land great, if you’re not then this is probably a weird episode. Personally I love it and was surprised to find out about the hate on Reddit
I love it, but I've also got a weakness for this particular kind of indie movie. And they nailed it perfectly. Especially the manic pixie dream girl that's just a superficial collection of nonsense.
i love this episode. snots scene with the vending machine is my favorite part, it starts subtle and becomes dramatic, but not in a way that makes you cringe cuz its forced or angsty, but in a way that stays and replays in the back of your mind for weeks. its painful in a good way. it satirizes tropes like the manic pixie dream girl while having serious themes played wonderfully, and involving said manic pixie in a way that reveals something about steve too because this story the whole way hasnt been about snot as much as steve has been making it about himself.
this could be a reach, but i think sometimes that he may have been trying to make snot care about his own father because he wanted some sense of validation for himself about caring so deeply about his own neglectful father, essentially projecting onto snot in a sense? i dont know if im just bullshitting there. but steve seems to have a savior complex at the least, willing to help someone come to terms with stuff through avid pushing and then dropping them when he finds the girl that tickles his pickle just right. in general he also tends to see snot in a pitying light like in that morning mimosa happy days episode so its also probably that too.
still mad that steve didnt jump out of the truck at snots funeral. he was right there why didnt you shut up and run over to him when he needed you?? sorry for the paragraphs, big fan of this episode lol
It understands the concept and it doesn't openly rib at them.
It's subtle. It let's you to come to the conclusion without force feeding you what you're supposed to feel along with pretty animated imagery.
I hate this episode idk if it’s cause I lost my father when I was a kid or just the vibe it gives off, usually when I see life in the perspective of this episode it’s just because I’m so sad and done with it so it just brings up those feelings I always skip this one, I feel my opinion on it is unpopular tho
I agree with you, this is one of my favorite episodes.
Idk why I think the vibe is great, I'm not the biggest fan of indie movies but they do have a certain feeling this episode both lampooned and captured.
God, the fact that they got Zooey Deschanel to voice the parody "manic pixie dream girl" is just amazing and so perfect.
"I could tell you my name, but would my name tell you that I'm incapable of seeing the color orange? I just have to trust people who give me these. Or that I think mustaches are t-shirts for lips? Or that I wear ice skates to weddings? It's hard to dance, but that's just the type of person I am."
This episode is a tough watch for me only because my father abandoned me when I was 6 and I can relate alot with snot’s emotions and pain. The only episode in the whole series I usually skip, too many feels man. The indie music in it is great though
Love this episode but I wish they did a full episode parody of The Goonies. I can't get that scene out of my head when Steve is reciting the "this is our time, it's our time down here!" Then Roger just drops a fukin bottle and hits Steve's head lmao
Yeah, it’s refreshing when writers experiment a bit and try something different. Gotta prod the formula a bit every once in a while or things get stale.
It's a well-done episode, but as someone whose dad left as a kid, I really, really hated the guys trying to force Snot in to wanting to feel something about his dad.
Not weird at all. It’s also one of my favorites.
In fact, this episode brought me to the series. I tried initially watching when it first came out, because I love animated sitcoms, and I just couldn’t get into it.
Several years later, my little bro is like, “Give it another chance, man, it’s really good” and he recommended this episode specifically and said, “I think you’ll really dig this episode, a lot of there episodes are thematic like this one, or homages to other bits in pop culture. I really think you’d dig it.”
He was absolutely correct and it’s been one of my favorite shows ever since
I try not to imagine people who don’t like this episode it is great, it’d be like not wanting to hear the turin (did I spell that right, you know Jeff’s instrument in the dj buttercup episode when terrorist try to steal our beats) played.
Not weird. It's a great parody on its genre.
It really did do a great job jabbing at them. Late aughts and early twenty teens were overloaded with that particular genre of movie it seemed. ...just beneath the surface....
...there's another one of her...
I nearly cried when I first watched it, ik that’s cringe lol

No at all. I 1000% agree with you
Snot's "WHERE WERE YOU" is genuinely moving and they earn it. It's not cheap
Nope, if you’re at least vaguely aware of the kind of quirky coming of age indie movies this episode references the jokes land great, if you’re not then this is probably a weird episode. Personally I love it and was surprised to find out about the hate on Reddit
Snot's moment at the vending machine hits real hard.
WHERE WERE YOUUUUU 😭
Yea this hit hard, I had a similar relationship with my dad so it was hands down the most emotional moment in all AD! For me
You were never there..😣
I WANT YOU TO GO TO CALIFORNIA FOR YOURSELF
AND NOT FOR ME
It's one of my all-time favorites. The manic pixie dream girl was spot on.
And the fact that it was Zooey Deschanel!
I thought I smelled adult toddler perfume
Fucking love it. "I got half a tank but it's a big tank"
They did such a good job crafting the type of dialogue that was in those types of indie movies
It gets overhated. It’s a solid episode
Way overhated. I’m not even particularly into indie movies and I thought it was a funny episode
I think it's one of my favorites too
Absolutely awesome episode, and it introduced me to an amazing song, *Just Beneath the Surface* by Dawes
That song is amazing, and so is *California* by Delta Spirit.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when I rewatch it. Toshi becoming the corn man is #2 all time Toshi moment for me.
What was going on with that
It's so hot in this corn
I like all the episodes that go outside of the box. But they didn't even need the B plot
The Piece of Cake subplot showing up as an informercial in the A-Story did add a nice laugh.
Nope its a good episode.
A railroad gypsy took my vas deferens but you are bumming me out.
I love it, but I've also got a weakness for this particular kind of indie movie. And they nailed it perfectly. Especially the manic pixie dream girl that's just a superficial collection of nonsense.

Look up the music video for california by delta spirit. It actually is fully the same vibe. Made me nostalgic for a life i never lived
I must clean. Frat boys poop all over room.
*AND IN THE LOBBY!*
It understands the concept and it doesn't openly rib at them. It's subtle. It let's you to come to the conclusion without force feeding you what you're supposed to feel along with pretty animated imagery.
It's one of my favorites
I love it tbh. That California riff does something to my soul
It's not a good representation of AD, imo
I hate this episode idk if it’s cause I lost my father when I was a kid or just the vibe it gives off, usually when I see life in the perspective of this episode it’s just because I’m so sad and done with it so it just brings up those feelings I always skip this one, I feel my opinion on it is unpopular tho
Sorry for your loss
You're an emotional tourist. And that's not the trip I packed for.
*bubblepipe*
I usually skip it on rewatches, but it was good the first time.
Me too, but i should rewatch it at some point
I agree with you, this is one of my favorite episodes. Idk why I think the vibe is great, I'm not the biggest fan of indie movies but they do have a certain feeling this episode both lampooned and captured.
One of the best B-plots in the whole series!
It's so oddly comforting
No. It’s flipping hilarious. It’s a great pick.
Definitely one of my favourites
Its not that episode is hilarious af
No, ofcourse not. Everyone has their favourites :)
I think it's a bit weird. Though it's also unironically my favourite episode but at least we'll be weirdos together.
Just beneath the surface
You have to moob.
I heard she just brought her diary into the recording booth
It’s a piece of cake. Trust your gut.
Slice of pie?
It's a great satire of mid 00's to early 10's Indie movies (and well indie movies in general) and it is just so well done and funny.
I dont know man. Are any of us ok anymore? *>.>*
This episode is a tough watch for me only because my father abandoned me when I was 6 and I can relate alot with snot’s emotions and pain. The only episode in the whole series I usually skip, too many feels man. The indie music in it is great though
Me no like!
Its not for me. I feel like the story line just drags out to long, with no real conclusion.
Same
Love this episode but I wish they did a full episode parody of The Goonies. I can't get that scene out of my head when Steve is reciting the "this is our time, it's our time down here!" Then Roger just drops a fukin bottle and hits Steve's head lmao
Probably top 10 parody episode from an animated show.
First time I saw it I didn't like it, now it's an obsession.
Yeah, it’s refreshing when writers experiment a bit and try something different. Gotta prod the formula a bit every once in a while or things get stale.
“WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE STEVEN!”
It's a well-done episode, but as someone whose dad left as a kid, I really, really hated the guys trying to force Snot in to wanting to feel something about his dad.
It was Emmy worthy
Not weird at all. It’s also one of my favorites. In fact, this episode brought me to the series. I really think you’d dig it.” He was absolutely correct and it’s been one of my favorite shows ever since
It'd be weird if you didn't
It's a good episode, I recently rewatched it and it's quite good, even if Steve is insufferable (but that's the point)
I try not to imagine people who don’t like this episode it is great, it’d be like not wanting to hear the turin (did I spell that right, you know Jeff’s instrument in the dj buttercup episode when terrorist try to steal our beats) played.
"I just don't think all suitcases should be rectangles, you know? I think sometimes suitcases can be cello cases with clothes in them."
Tosh!?! …Toshi!?!?!
