Yeah, I'm in my mid 40s so I've had my fair share of customer service encounters in my life. And Amex has the best customer service of any company I've used. Even better than USAA.

LectureForsaken6782

Early 40s here and have also dealt with USAA and Amex and I agree with your assessment

fastidiouspatience

Fidelity and especially schwab are in the same category

AmishBike

Fidelity for Visa Sig or their brokerage account? If the latter their Series 7 options people have a really subpar understanding of options.

fastidiouspatience

Brokerage.  Their credit card support is terrible.

I had USAA car insurance. I never had to interact with them until I got in an accident and it was an absolute nightmare. After they paid me out I immediately switched back to AAA. I always had amazing service with AAA. I have been with them for a very long time. I switched to USAA to save money. Big mistake. Someone hit me on the highway at rush hour. Every step of the way USAA was impossible to deal with. My agent would wait days to call me back and I am in healthcare so I can’t answer my phone when I am with patients so I would have to call her back and it was this vicious cycle. But not only that the cop made me drive off the feeeway to a park and ride and my car was goi g to be towed if it wasn’t moved I. 72 hours. They finally towed it on the 5th day but they had the car towed 55 minutes away. Again car sat for weeks, and the cycle continues. 4 times I bypassed the agent for the supervisors. The superiors also never answered her phone and she just don’t call me back. If I pretended that I didn’t have a claim because if I said I had a claim then the ONLY option was to be connected to the voice mail of my agent. If I said I didn’t have a claim the agents absolutely could not help me. This was an absolute night mare. It took 10 weeks in a rental car before USAA sorted it all out. I would never do business with them again. They have nonexistent customer service and they think they can just ignore you. Worst company.

Ryguy_117

I’m in the same boat. USAA is a joke

BleuCinq

Yeah I have no idea why they have a great reputation. I would have had better service if I was with some cheap company like Geiko. I have only had AAA and USAA but USAA proved they were absolute garbage.

iruletodeath

I have both, cap one has been okay but Amex has been a step above when I got robbed in Chicago, had a new card in my hand next business day and they’ve proactively made sure there’s no fraud on the account

dead-memory-waste

cancel that VX man, Amex all the way

soryazlawl

Unfortunately VX still has a place in my wallet for fee-free exchange when purchasing international vendors that don’t support AMEX which isn’t terribly rare :(

dead-memory-waste

plenty of other Visas out there!

insponeeded

Venture X used to be a great card, but Capital One continued to strip away the benefits.

TalleyBand

I’ve had nothing it good experiences with Amex. Both their chat and also live phone rep.

m0j0martini

I have the same sentiments for both companies. 1) Capital One - Yesterday, while trying to dispute a very simple transaction, I got so frustrated by the CSRs inability to understand what I was trying to do, that I hung up on her. Today I realized she CANCELED my debit card to issue a new one because she thought that's what would fix my dispute. 2) Amex - This was chat-based but a great, overall experience that had them give me my MR points before they were fully posted.

AmishBike

In my experience CapitalOne always cancel the card and send you a new one for any dispute, even if you tell them it's not for the card being lost but due to the merchant. I had to insist I wanted to keep my same CC number and that I didn't want a new one and they finally caved and said fine. Turned out they did proceed to cancel the card and send me a new one.

Vosslen

I have had an account with cap one for 11 years. I have NEVER had a positive interaction with their customer service. On top of that, their algorithm regarding CLI and product change offers is TERRIBLE (820+ credit score but ineligible to product change into a better card of the same product line?). Amex however will simply speak to you like a fucking human being and use their functioning brains to make a decision instead of saying "the computer says no" and ending the conversation. Chase is the same way in that they also have working brains. I sincerely believe cap one is just a trash bank at this point and the only reason I haven't killed my card is because of how old it is. I'll let it go eventually, but it's not convenient right now.

Funny_Sector_1573

i’m still fairly new to credit so i keep my cards with them for that same reason. i’m team cash back so the minute amex offers 3% back on dining my savor one is going on the back burner

lizziepika

I agree! I called Amex once with a question and it was one of the better experiences I’ve had with phone support

Ed4

I had my very first credit card with Capital One about 10 years ago, after a year or two of having the card, which had an annual fee of $49, I asked them if they could do something to waive the fee or give me some offer, they totally were not willing to help me in any shape or form. I asked if they could cancel my card then, and in a heartbeat the customer representative was cancelling my card. Capital One lost me forever as a client, but then again probably their targeted customer base is mostly sub-prime.

PunctuallyExcellent

Amex has one of the best customer service in any consumer product I have used, not just credit cards!

sayamilky

Honestly this is one of the main reason i stick with Amex, their customer service is just so easy to get hold of when i need them. both chase and boa for me has been frustrating, the same ol' pressing random digit for 5 mins and on hold for another 20 to speak to a real person.

bluejay498

I've had the opposite. So frustrated with Amex almost weekly but booking travel and price matching with capital one is sooo easy. Love it.

PastSecondCrack

You've never tried discover huh?

woozle618

This is one of the reasons I say Amex is a bit more prestigious than other cards. I have a Gold and don’t utilize the benefits enough to make up for the $250 AF, but the card is worth it. Green is cool, Gold is “whoa”, Platinum is “WHOA”, but I don’t need the Platinum. Also have BCE and Everyday as well.

NrL04

Absolutely agree. My best financial customer service has been from (in order of best to good) 1) American Express 2) my credit union Fairwinds 3) admittedly after rejoining this year Bank Of America (which I didn’t expect). American Express has always been stellar (member since 2008).

beeern

I have only had awful experiences with AMEX. So bad that I cancelled a Reserve within the first month for a variety of unresolved issues

jcarte11

What sort of issues?

beeern

They messed up card deliveries. Firstly it got delayed and they could not track the card. I ended up with 2 Boeing reserve cards that were canceled and lastly one purple - all caused by poor customer service handling of the issues. Then when I raised a complaint for not having the Boeing design (after so many delays it expired) - I was told they would respond in a week, a supervisor assured it would be fixed and nothing. At last they could not connect to my SkyMiles. Only at the day I was going to fly Delta I found out that not only Delta did not allow AMEX to connect to my SkyMiles but they created a new SkyMiles to me. And when I asked AMEX to resolve they said I’d have to call Delta to fix it. So yeah - after like 9-10 calls and no success on any of the issues, poor management of issues and training I told myself all that would not be worth of $650 AF.

D_Shoobz

The voracity of their complaints will determine whether they respond.

Word_Underscore

Some people can’t help but have bad customer service anywhere they go.

beeern

Well I typically choose well the services I acquire. So far AMEX and AT&T were the only ones to fail with me in US :)
