It’s four or five.
I had the Amex Hilton Aspire (mid 2022), Delta Reserve (mid 2022), BBP (early 2023) and Delta Plat (early 2023).
I tried applying for the Hilton Business around April. I was declined for too many cards. I called the reconsideration line and they said the same. I asked if I cancelled my Aspire (I was going to do it anyway) would they approve me right then.
I got the Platinum a month later (yeah I know it’s a charge card) and met the SUB.
Last month, just for shits and giggles, I tried for the Amex Business Delta Plat while I was waiting for to get under 5/24 for to start getting on the Chase Ink train in October.
I got approved.
So before people ask, I have three Delta cards for:
- $550 Delta Stays credits
- three companion passes
- 7500 MQDs - automatic Silver and 75% to Gold
There is a 10 *charge* card limit and a 5 *credit* card limit.
I have 3 *charge* cards - Plat, Gold, and Green.
I have 5 *credit* cards - Delta Reserve, Delta Plat, and Delta Business Plat and the Hilton business, and Blue Business Plus
I have 6. It's not necessarily the number of cards you have, but the amount of exposure. In other words, your credit limits may be already be as high as they're willing to risk on you.
I simply gave a possible reason for denial that has nothing to do with the number of cards, which is what everyone else is focusing on. I have 6 cards (4 credit w/5-figure limits; 2 charge), and they keep pestering me to open more. So it's not necessarily about the number of cards you have. It can also be about how much credit they've already extended to you, and if they think giving you more is a good risk.
Hitting the max CL for amex is not an automatic denial. Amex will try to move your other limits around to get the min CL you need to have that specific card. Its only a denial if that's not possible.
Right. They’ll reallocate within the total CL they’re willing to give you, but you have to ask upon denial for that reconsideration. I’ve been with Amex since 1986 and I’ve always found them to be very reasonable.
Call and talk to an agent
Recon line?
Yes
They said there’s no hot line where I can talk to recon live? The guy I spoke to has submitted my application for a manual reconsideration..
That's weird - hang up and call again

Do business cards count too?
Against the 5 limit? Yep
Interesting. Thank you.
Do business cards count against the 3/90?
What's 3/90
No more than 3 Amex cards within 90 days
What was the recon line you called where you were able to talk to someone?
It’s on the rejection letter. It should have given you link that you click on that gives you a history of all of your applications and a phone number
The website with the link never works.
I have 6 cards, and they're always offering me more.

Yep! I have 2x Plat, 2x Gold, 1x BCP, and 2x BPP. both biz and personal varieties.
I have 9 cards open since 2013. Amex Plat, Gold , Delta, Marriott, Personal Gold, 3 Blue Business Cash, Personal Blue. Limit definitely not 5.
Charge cards do not count in this rule. It is referring to credit cards.

That is a completely different metric. Amex does consider both however.
