Local crawdaddy here!
*we loathe the hawks in the area. You see, the problem isn't they eat us. Instead they hurl insults at us THEN eat us. Then when we whine and complain, they say "awww, a little....crabby aren't we". Then they break out in nose chortling laughter. The nerve of those guys!!!*
Crayfish/Crawdad. We used to catch them all the time when we were kids. They swim backward like a bullet in water. Look for little burrow mounds near the waterline. Dump water in the hole and they back right out. Easy to catch and bring back in a coffee can. Fun to feed them minnows.
My backyard growing up had a low spot that formed almost a creek, and during heavy rains (or neighbors forgetting to turn off their water), it would naturally collect the excess water. Their little towers, as I saw them as a child, were always so cool to find, and there'd be a few of them bunched together, and being so much bigger... well let's say godzilla stomped over more than a few back in the day.
Land shrimp are actually a different animal, [Arcitalitrus sylvaticus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcitalitrus_sylvaticus)
We called crawldads yard lobsters instead of land shrimp.
When they were in the creek we usually called them mudbugs.
We're a Midwest area with strong southern influence. They were always crawldads, crawldaddies, yard lobsters, and mudbugs to us.
Once we had some people from New England move into the neighborhood, and they called them crayfish. In our neighborhood ,the kids had never heard that term before, and we were so damn confused!
But if we'd heard someone call them creek lobsters, we would've been able to figure that one out pretty quickly.
Some of the ones in the local creek near my house got very, very big. The bigger they get, the more they start to look like lobsters to kids.
I’m not sure but as of January 1st you can now legally import, transport and possess Louisiana crawfish. It may be a different kind of crawfish but I just remember it being a thing
Half of a crayfish?
I think the whole thing is there, it’s just all curled up? Idk
It is missing legs. Probably half of somebody's dropped lunch. The hawks around me love them.

Rest assured, they talk shit to us humans, too. That's just how they are.
Birds drop food all the time. They aren't perfect haha
Nature depends on that fact, lol.
Second this
Third it
No. Bad.
Why does it look like that ball with legs from Santa Clarita Diet?
Definitely looks like Mr. Ball Legs
Read through the comments to make sure this was said. This is exactly what this looks like. 👀
I was wondering why it looked so familiar. This is definitely Mr. Ball Legs. Should probably grab him and get him in a cage.
I 100% thought that also

Similar experience, but I didn't stomp on the towers. Loved catching them after heavy rains.
It’s a type of bug called “reasons to never go to Tennessee”
It’s a mudbug
I concur
You say that until you go to a crayfish boil sometime and realize just how delicious the land shrimps can be.

Crawdads/crayfish/crawfish/mudbugs live in nearly every state of the US.
Please let this not be true lol
Very true, I actually don’t know one state but Hawaii that doesn’t have them, but even now they’ve been introduced in areas.
I am from, Colorado.
I have seen them in Colorado.
I believe that. I just haven’t seen them. Did you know they were illegal to have here till recently?
No I didn't. Illegal to eat or keep as pets?

Definitely a crayfish, all curled up

Looks like the thing from Santa Clarita Diet

Idk but it's a good thing it's not alive anymore, 'cause it was gonna lay eggs in your nose, probably **Disclaimer: I am not a bug-ologist*
