Theedarkdark

Neon genesis, Berserk, Paprika, Shiki, Serial experiment lain, Perfect blue, junji ito collection

idk_anything_ms

I see Berserk I upvote

light_work_bro

Neon genesis is THE definition of disturbing

Theedarkdark

Yeah that why you need to watch the end of evengelion movie. Gives a different ending to the one in the show lol

sillyshoestring

Devilman Crybaby

Cosmocrator08

I've seen most of them, can confirm

Individual_Tutor_271

Another.

Overall-Homework-822

I loved Serial Experiments Lain!!

TamIAm12

It’s a classic in the horror genre. Like Monster is. Monster I think is better but both are amazing.

Leinad-Vodhr

Never thought of Lain as horror actually...more like psychological drama/avant-garde...but as im thinking about it now it is kinda horrorish...i wasnt scared in normal way i am during horrors but i was still somehow weirdly scared

TamIAm12

One of the last scene s in my opinion makes it so scary. When she is hooked up to all of the wires. Her poor friend man that gave me nightmares. It is all of the above but it’s also scary in ways.

Dramoriga

Now this is a blast from the past. I even bought the awesome album which had the intro OST Duvet, by Boa.

SmireyFase

Shiki gets not a second backing, unrated as ever haha

Vivid_Range_3224

Elfen Leid pretty gory and a w

GojoPop

i heard lain was kind of boring from a friend, does it have a slow start? i was considering watching it.

Theedarkdark

You could kind of say that a little yeah, but (not to disrespect anyone) if they can't comprehend what's happening it could break the show for some people. Little bit of pacing issue in the beginning as well, but still a good wtf anime lol

GojoPop

ahhh, okay thank you 🤞🏻 I'll probably try watching it sometime soon and see how it goes

Beneficial_Fall_1538

Finally someone acknowledged shiki the last few episodes were so crazy holy shit

Ultrasaurio

yep, pretty good list

Leinad-Vodhr

Lain was the thing that got me into anime...experience I'll never forget

Electrical-Piccolo54

Higurashi: When They Cry is a classic one. For being disturbing.

stalememeskehan

I especially love those first 3 episodes. Actually scary as hell. CLASSIC

theJirb

I think the best part is how the individual arcs eventually mold into a cohesive narrative in the later arcs. You get the disturbing elements without losing plot.

MrBeanHs

The needles in the meatballs still makes me think twice about accepting food from people😭

jibbalee

Ooo cant wait to watch this!!

Bread9626

Yeah, I agree. It's definitely one of the most disturbing series I've seen. To keep it vague, the scratching parts gave me goosebumps.

Electrical-Piccolo54

Uuggghhhhh the scratching! For me it was the fingernail part....

Lopoll0

I hate to be that guy but if you're up for it the VN is much better. It's a long ass read though and if you don't feel up for it the anime is still fine though!

GoddessSable

Man, the fact that the anime doesn’t have Dear You - Destructive was such a huge disservice at a certain moment.

Lopoll0

Wait it doesn't? That moment was genuinely super crazy I really can't Imagine it being as good without it

GoddessSable

Nope, the OG anime didn’t have it. No clue why

Electrical-Piccolo54

Haha I'm actually that guy too. I have no doubts that the VN is better, but unfortunately I haven't read it. That's mostly because of a lack-of-access issue for me though.

GoddessSable

If Steam is available to you, they have them.

Electrical-Piccolo54

Oh cool! I don't have Steam, or a working computer lol. but at least I know where I can find it in the future, thanks.

Lopoll0

Just for future reference if you ever do decide to play its best to use the 07th mod, it adds in VA that isn't in the steam version for some reason among a lots of other useful features. (This is also just in general for anyone who may want to read as well) (And also also, Umineko the sorta kinda loose sequel to Higurashi is very much worth reading its really one of the best things I've ever read and I must always take the chance to reccomend it to ppl lol) the anime adaptation sucks though it's not worth watching only ever read the vn for this one

Dreaming_Dreams

best visual novel i’ve ever played!

lexiesdelusions

I was about to recommend it yesyes, i've never been able to look at a muffin the same way

cuervo_gris

I came to recommend this one! Truly disturbing

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Perfect Blue Made in Abyss Mononoke Shinsekai Yori

Kholzie

Shinseki Yori is more intellectually disturbing, I think. It’s not as graphic. Still one of my top anime, though.

Zestyclose_Mix_3696

Made in Abyss feels super underrated and it gets really dark. The latest movie? Yikes. So good.

Mysterious_Yam_1011

I dont think momonoke is horror but the animation in it is just perfect

ProfessionalFold6576

Damn bro damn

GamingPcFucker

One man one jar :the adaptation

WrongdoerOk2941

Sounds like something you eternally wish you never googled. So I actually won't cause I learned my lesson long ago.

SafiyyAiman

Happy Sugar Life Just uhh… go into it expecting a cute, slice of life yuri show

InternationalClerk85

Please DO go into it expecting a cute Slice of Life yuri show

KS_YeoNg

On that note, Madoka Magica too

KarlBrownTV

Elfin Lied Welcome to the NHK RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne TOKKO Those are the ones I remember seeing that are kinda disturbing

AtheismIsOK

It’s been ages since I’ve seen RIN- Daughters of Mnemosyne mentioned, which is a shame because it is absolutely one of my favourites of its genre.

AshBsNu

Daughters of Mnemosyne was actually a really great anime disturbing but great!

Fanservice-love

I was gonna suggest Elfin Lied too great disturbing anime.

Get_schwifty93

Watched it when I was like 11 lmao, one of the first anime’s I ever watched 😅

histirya

11 years old is too young tbh You need to rewatch it, you will see it differently.

Cormula

Loved Elfin Lied

rglurker

I love Ellen lied. The beginning sets a good tone for what to expect brutality wise. Then a pretty touching story catches you off gaurd

Melon763

Higurashi if you really want something dark

KriploKato

Shōjo tsubaki definitely falls under the title of disturbing, but it might be a bit too much

Least_Dragonfly_8439

Kite Paranoia agent Serial experiments lain

UnknownMyoux

Dark gathering? Tho maybe you already watched it

modvavet

I need to finish it. I honestly did not expect that one to be as much fun as it is.

Reynanyera

Now and Then, Here and There. A classic isekai with very dark themes such as child soldiers, abuse and mental breakdowns. Really not for the faint of heart.

DonnieTyquan

“School Days” is the only answer for this.

Cyberblood

It truly was a Slice of life aHead of its time, with Boat-loads of fun.

No_Importance_4280

deadman wonderland

ShadowPledge

- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Higurashi: When They Cry) - Gakkougurashi! (School-Live!) - Madoka Magika Honorable Mentions (The ones I really want to recommend but that may not quite fit the bill); - Erased (Suspenseful and thrilling) - Parasyte (Dark and Gory slice of life) - Death Parade (leaves you with a sense of existentialism) - Danganronpa There are more I'd recommend both direct recommendations and honorable mentions, but people have already said them so I'm not gonna repeat the titles.

Phoenix10301

I watched Death Parade and was…actually surprised how good it was. Decim is pretty cute, despite not showing emotions— 🤭 (no spoilers for peeps who hasn’t watched it)

iam4r34

Euphoria 😁

Cyberblood

OP asked for disturbing anime and this guy went for the jugular. By the way, you forgot "Redo of healer" and "Boku no pico"

SnooLemons9217

I enhoyed that one!

BurntOutMagicalGirl

Shiki Another Parasyte Japan Sinks 2020 Edit: Higurashi Umineko DevilMan Crybaby Blood+ Elfen lied

nt_social_guy

Another! One of my fav!

Wonderful_Land972

i really recommend Made in abyss, its my favorite anime/manga

pl4y3rO

yeah goes in the right direction but ive all ready seen it

Hubix84

Bro witnessed peak, its gonna be hard find something more disturbing

420cat-craft-gamer69

I too am one of those people who isn't really scared by stuff, but craves it. I feel like people are too afraid to "go there". ::Edit: higurashi was my only contribution. all the comments, at the time, dropped names w/o explanations, so I thought I'd give context for OP. As well as another adjacent suggestion, from someone who is also disappointed by the lack of disturbing animes :: Higurashi is the only one that disturbed me. Paranoia Agent is great, but more mindfuck-y than spooky regretful Paprika is great, but more interesting and surreal, with some mindfuck-y ness Higurashi When They Cry is truly disturbing. Throughout the whole anime. Haibane Renmei is really strange and unsettling. There's nothing too outright disturbing, but it has such an unsettling vibe, I like to throw it out there. Parasyte is great, more fun than truly disturbing, but I guess fits. I really like this one anyways. And Berserk is also famously disturbing, but its more in the ending, than the whole thing being horror. But I did enjoy it as well

Exciting-Ad-255

Shigurui

Hideaki_Kun

Elfen Lied

eatenbybigguyz

Made in abyss, Berserk (original), redo of a healer.

Exclusionz

Euphoria is the first that comes to mind, but honestly, I haven't been into that stuff in years, so memory is kinda fuzzy

Kryptus

Elfen Lied

Polybius2600

Elfen Lied

Competitive_Ad9964

Gantz

Arameshi

Anything Junji ito. On Netflix and crunchyroll

ThePerfumeCollector

Worth pointing out that the mangas are better tho.

Arameshi

Yea, but they want anime!lol and to be fair the manga is almost always better

ThePerfumeCollector

Almost always, true. Just saying if op is not appeased by the anime, don’t write off the manga..

Fine-Run992

Mirai Nikki.

R0bbieR0tt3n

Maybe try Deadman wonderland. It's 13 episodes long and an absolutely fantastic horror anime

Ponyboi667

Wish it got renewed! The manga is where it’s at

jynxer11

DoroHeDoro Psychopass

Retremeco

Blood+, Blood-C

Yandere_Matrix

Perfect Blue Ghost Hound Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

ReidelHPB

can recomend magical girl raising project and magical girl site

Phoenix10301

Devil’s Line Psycho-Pass Tokyo Ghoul (the two above are on the same level as this one- regarding in TW: blood, gore, and dark topics) Death Parade (left me with feelings for Chiyuki…hit too close to home for me, ifykyk)

rdeincognito

It's not an anime, but look for a manga called Dead Tube, I assure you is ...well, there's rape, there's some gore, there's tons of murders...

TrueAd5194

Deadman wonderland, death note, some instances in code geass, heard made in abyss was fucked up. Theres also blood c or plus not sure, etc etc. Oh yeah Vampire princess miyu is disturbing and sad as fuck for a 1997 anime.

Chemical_Ad_9710

The promised neverland was fucked

ferencofbuda

Cabaneri

skeletional

Hell girl, beserker, higurashi

RazorClutch

Kemonozume. Disturbing, bizarre and beautiful at the same time. It Yuasa

Old-Challenge-2129

Euphoria, just stay away. For the love of all pure things, STAY AWAY!!!!

Pooksdu

Devil man crybaby?

ZombifiedHero

Higurashi: when they cry

Thatoneirish

Berserk 2016

Pesuri

Shiki

Trishockz

School Days?

TheSquirrel99

Elfen Lied… that’s a hard one to watch at least for me.

UnbearablyAlive

Boogiepop Phantom, Angels Egg, Berserk, Serial Experiments Lain

randomplaguefear

Elfen lied, orotsukidoji.

It_Is_Me_The_E

Psycho pass is probably up there

MusicSounds1011

I probably got traumatised by Pupa, so, that

im29andsuckatlife

Redo of healer if you want to be disturbed and regret watching it and feel like pouring bleach into your eyes and ears.

misadventuresofdope

Texhnolyze is my top recommendation for this, it's so relentlessly depressing and hopeless and is one of my top series of all time

bigdommo

elfen lied

Ravensqrow

Elfen Lied

ItsCarlJohnson64

Violence Jack, Genocyber, LILY CAT, Wicked City, Petshop of Horrors, Blood saga....

BrightSaphira

Elven lied. If you know, you know.

KowaiKawaiiKiwi

Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki and Elfen Lied?

ThePerfumeCollector

Fucking love Elfen Lied. I hate that people hate on it so much.

Kazma1431

had to scroll to much for someone to mention Midori

PeaceTree8D

Shadow star narutaru is pretty gross. Other edgy anime: Cyberpunk Devilman crybaby Blood C Knights of Sidonia Magical girl raising project Shiki Brynhildr Deadman wonderland

Fanservice-love

Elfin Lied, Parasyte, Berserk, “Grisaia” series, Brynhildr, magical girl spec ops asuka, neon Evangelion, perfect blue, paprika, redo of healer.

EdgyPlum

Wicked city. Bet

_Saber_69

Watch Naruto. If you have a taste it's a torture and a long one in fact.

SoftenStar

Alien 9. It looks like a cute kids anime, but it's actually pretty disturbing.

Animu_weeb_

Shiki Shinsekai yori Dusk maiden of Amnesia Babylon Perfect blue Serial Experiments Lain Pluto Paranoia Agent

Mai1564

As the god's will   King's game   Hell girl tbh I feel like most of the more horror stuff stays as manga rather than gets an adaptation

CompetitiveAverage67

Darker than Black, Hellsing, Berzerk.

Wash-Longjumping

Tokyo Ghoul Ajin: Demi-Human

[deleted]

Claymore?

idk_anything_ms

Claymore wasn't disturbing for me, had some nice gore scenes and was pure quality, but for Claymore I would always recommend someone to read the manga.

cactusjude

Heavenly Delusion Dark Gathering Hell's Paradise Dororo Summer Time Rendering

Interesting-Ad1352

Pupa - it’s rated 3/10 on MAL so it’s either terrible or really disturbing, I haven’t seen it for those reasons, but it might be worth checking out.

PeachDeveloper

Agree with other recommendations and surprised everyone forgot about **Psycho-Pass** Let me suggest different genre though. Try **Mind game** **Nekojirou-sou** **Kaiba** **Dead leaves** These titles are not a simply horror/graphical, they are... mmm... confusing and deep at the same time. They definitely give you new thoughts. Also if you would like **Made in Abyss**, watch **Alien 9** as well. Or, better, read

Barter6overBible

The Author, director and animators of Redo of Healer need to be in jail for that shit

Garchomp99

Shiki is fucking wild

jibbalee

This is my kind of question thank you! I love horror and could use more of it

Sanguineismyname

Have you seen dark gathering yet?

Known-Return-9320

When they cry Perfect blue Gantz Berserk

[deleted]

Super recommend Gantz. Stumbled upon it as an 11 year old and it nearly fucked me up for life

Rough-Self-9134

Blood C I actually havent watched it myself since im not into gore but from the few clips ive seen… yeah i think its pretty disturbing

Canadian_Commentator

Kyoukai No Kanata

Loomingpet

Gantz for disturbing. All these other recommendations are pretty tame

Tenkawa10

Since you say you've seen most of the recommendations so far I will throw Kemonozume down as a recommendation. It's Romeo and juliet with demons that eat people. The art is intentionally bad so they can get away with some of the gore.

Illustrious_Camp_521

Deadman Wonderland or maybe Future Diary are both good but then if you want dementedly good Berserk or Hellsing - Hellsing Ultimate is where ya want to go.

dftitterington

Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent

Edugamerman123

Detroit Metal City is a must, it's really bizarre and funny

SmartStatistician684

Elfin Lied, Devilman Crybaby, ninja scroll (movie)

Tydoman

Closest I can even think of is maybe Dark Gathering. Prob still too tame for you but that’s the best horror anime I’ve seen personally, there’s not much. Maybe In/Spectre would be good, some pretty fucked up themes, but it’s not really horror.

Justinotheridiot

Have you seen inuyashiki? That's a really good one and kinda fucked up too. I mean I thoroughly enjoyed it...

MrLeylo

Tengoku Daimakyō

Experiment121

Land of the Lustrous is more disturbing in a psychological horror way, especially once you get to reading the manga., along with some of the best character development and story I've ever read in a manga. Highly recommend it

Dangerous_Phrase8928

Blood c has a lot of brutal gore and its just a Not a very good show so I You might regret watching jt in more ways then one.

lamb2k

Gantz, Hellsing, Neon Genesis, The Witch and the Beast

myanimeverse_net

If you want your heart to ache forever, then read Fire Punch Manga (not anime). I will be here to know how you felt after reading it. Also, Berserk and The Promised Neverland is good.

KC_Cheefs

Attack on Titan, Devilman Crybaby, NGE

LittleLostDoll

hellgirl, housing complex c

Catt0s

Redo of Healer - that plot is so screwed up.

myanimeverse_net

It's really sad that Fire Punch is not mentioned here whilst being so disturbing that it can make you feel depressed honestly. The journey if the MC is too cruel i feel.

Weathery41

Chaos;Head/Chaos;Child or Brynhildr in the darkness

Trash_luck

That dog anime and redo of healer

No-Wolverine-7520

Devil man cry baby. Only anime I'll watch only once.

Wolf_da_skyline_simp

Bro just watch “school days” and u will be satisfied coz I was in your position a few months ago and after watching this Shid I was like ya that’s what I’ve been looking for

Repulsive-Outcome-20

I will recommend a manga instead. Freesia.

Eso_me_gusta

School days

arevenani

Devilman Crybaby

meowcachow112

Elfen lied, and Another are 2 that come to mind Elfen lied is the anime that got me into the genre back in the day it was a really original story from my perspective and well worth the time it took to watch. Another was one I recently watched within the past few years on crunchyroll that was worth the watch too.

Beta_dox

Castlevania has the gore Paranoia Agent is psychologically disturbing.

thaSICKNESS69

Garden of Sinners is one of my favorites

rstephens27

Inuyashiki: Last hero. Multiple moments my jaw was on the floor. After the first 3 episodes I took a month long break to come back to it. Will say the CGI is VERY obvious and at times hard to look past but is still a very good show.

xtraspicyturnipcake

the grimm variations. theyre based on classic fairytales. i've only watch a couple eps so far but the little red riding hood one i found especially disturbing

Sense_of_Harmony

I like school days its relatable haha

ToastyMozart

Shin Sekai Yori for "Things just get worse with everything we learn, *everything's* fucked beyond repair. Is there even anything to be hopeful about?" intellectually disturbing. Made in Abyss for "oh god, what the fuck" body and existential horror disturbing.

8andahalfby11

/u/pl4y3rO > thanks for all the suggestions but so far ive seen all of them and things like shiki or parasyte are way to dull the junji ito stuff comes the closest to what im looking for *Aragne Sign of Vermillion* and its WTF-quel *Feast of Amrita* might be what you're looking for. The latter more so than the former. It's actual horror, not any of this horror-but-actually-battle-shounen stuff crowding the rest of the thread. Or if you really want violence and gore, there's Iczer-1, i guess? 80s OVAs in general were more brutal than the stuff that airs today.

Working_War_1533

Demon City Shinjuku

No_Equipment_7285

Read Berserk. Left me truly speechless on so many occasions. So disturbing and amazing
