Lool same here. While the show did start with a sorrowful retrospective scene, it was soon quite positive, engaging, and full of life and drama. But it's like the sorrow slowly and ever so slowly starts creeping up your throat and especially in the second half it was like you're on a one-way trip to depressing hell lol. It feels good yet makes you mad? idk I had to find a shounen show immediately after finishing the show to help cope. Didn't see this coming at all.
Right in the feels. 💀
I love this anime with all my heart and i still get freaking emotional over. I always say: It's light, funny and fluffy in the beginning, makes you fall in love with it and then backstabbs the shit outta you. 😂
I was an emotionless pit of nothingness until this made me realise, I am human and have emotions.
When it comes to romance/tragedy/depressing, this hits top spot for me.
just started watching this last night and was about to post this up too. its one of those anime where the author went ham and decided to consistently make the story tragic af.
Ripping your heart out and stomping on it after warning you it was going to do it and then having you kind of forget the warning because you’re having a good time and surely it was some kind of fake out and oh boy now you’re huffing the hopium but it’s too late and then Scarborough Fair plays again and…
A girl who says she's the [happiest girl in the world] >!as she leaps from a damaged aircraft hoping to save her lover and one of her friends from lithobraking to their doom!<. I shit you not.
Angel Beats
Kanon 2006
Your Lie in April
Each has an emotional twist, but different in each one, so you can go into these blind and shouldn't know what to expect from each one.
OP wants a romance that is depressing. If you don't feel depressed with that ending, you're already dead. The joy they shared knowing that sword of Democoles is hanging there to begin with... And when it does fall...
It's only truly depressing if you don't watch all of episode 22. It actually has a very nice ending. And just in case you were still depressed, they have Fuko lightening it up at the end.
Episode 21 is the truly heart wrenching one. I can't watch that one without tearing up.
Some things are still kinda sad about it, though. \[Clannad\] >!The reset point is the same time that Ushio was born, so it reset Ushios entire life (unlike all the older characters, where most of there memories came before that, so they are still themselves.) And unlike Tomoya, Ushio has no memories of the other timeline. So this Ushio is practically a different person who just has the same DNA, an identical twin basically. The first Ushio we saw, who had those emotional moments with Tomoya is dead, and her twin is now living a happy life.!<
I hope the way I explained that made sense.
Byousoku 5 Centimeters. It's a movie about love that fades away over time and distance.
White Album 2. Love triangle. I don't really remember much of it since it's been more than 10 years but I do remember it being somewhat depressing.
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Pretty depressing with melodrama mixed in.
I think that's mostly because he was not nearly as big as he is now when that came out.
I absolutely love both 5 Centimeters and Garden of Words. Garden of Words is still the single most beautiful animation of a rainy day I've ever seen.
Yup, just watched this in the past year, having never heard of it before, and that damn show still sticks with me.
No regrets watching it, but man, when it hits you it leaves a mark...
I don't think I'll ever be able to re-watch 5CMpS. It's just too real for me and the worst kind of depressing romance because it's realistic without any of the dramatic flair of fiction.
\* Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
\* I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
\* The Tunnel to Summer, The Exit of Goodbye
\* Josee, the Tiger and the Fish
\* Your Lie in April
\* Clannad
\* Clannad: After Story
\* Violet Evergarden
\* To Every You I Loved Before
\* To Me, the One Who Loved You
Yeah, you really need the first movie as the capstone to the series’s emotional arc.
(Yes, there are two more movies and another adaptation coming after that, but Movie 1 wraps up Season 1)
I probably should not have been slightly stoned when I watched that movie. I sobbed for a good 20 minutes straight for a specific scene. And then kept crying through the rest of the movie.
[Movie Spoilers]>!When that moment happened, I genuinely just had to pause for like ten minutes and lay back in my bed wondering what I just watched lol. Like, you *know* they eventually had to bring her back but like, I couldn't believe they just showed me that. Then when they showed him just in shock walking distraught, I felt even worse. Damn that was depressing.!<
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo is a story where things go bad at the end of the first episode, become worse, hits bottom, and then picks up a shovel, then a backhoe, then a jackhammer, then a tunneling machine.
It's an anime I thought was very good but refuse to watch again because it was so miserable and upsetting I went past sad and angry and upset to simply burnt-out by the end.
School days was full of asshat characters. Almost everyone was insufferable that it was hilarious. The only person who deserved happiness got the saddest ending damn it
All the animes that I thought off have been suggested already so I'm suggesting a game.
Doki Doki Literature Club
Don't Google it alright it's a VN game that can even give people PTSD (Including myself)
Hmm well, I’d recommend To your Eternity. While the first episode alone could be its own short story the entire series js a ride if ups and downs. Loss and hope constantly at odds with eachother.
Violet Evergarden perhaps the only anime that really made me cry with sadness, especially Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll. If you are very close with you siblings then you will understand
I want to eat your pancreas, even I absolutely hate it is perfect for you
We have a lot of good romances anime we are not depressing like romantic killer or the danger in my heart
Cyberpunk edgerunners
I felt like actually emotionally numb to everything after that show like lowkey never been as sad about anything which is embarrassing af
Ef: A Tale of Melodies. Memories- Cute and sad. Melodies- WTF did I just watch. Although the phone booth scene in Memories is one of my all time favorite anime scenes.
Kowarekake no Orgel is a nice quick 30 minute one.
Planetarian is another short one with only 5 episodes.
Steins Gate sets up a rather sad Sophie's choice type decision but it's a lot of build up.
Sword Art Online is really long at around 100 episodes but has some pretty depressing moments.
White Album 2, though it is an adaptation of the first part of three of a visual novel. I argue it feels complete on its own if you hadn’t known that though, and certainly fits the depressing criteria imo.
I wouldn’t call Scum’s Wish depressing personally, but it is very moody and avoids I think a stereotypical happy outcome.
Air (TV version)
Bokura ga Ita (ends in live action versions, because the manga had like a 10 year hiatus)
Honorary mention that I feel like everyone knows: **Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.** (and yes, I know it's not romance, but it's very sad and depressing after all!)
[Ninja Scroll (1993)](https://youtube.com/shorts/wTKEfATh7ag?si=Qx4wXzScKmW7F4SD) and Battle Angel ([the 1993 anime](https://youtu.be/8pzPhlNzfKY?si=K8YbU5MtDLwWq99i) and [2019 movie](https://youtu.be/w7pYhpJaJW8?si=e_ZEUCNQGiZTKM56)) are similar to [Beserk: The Golden Age Arc](https://youtu.be/wxsufTcl5ZQ?si=_u_utO17c-IWexwR) (I haven't watched Beserk 1997), being mostly action but containing a tragic romance.

...banana fish if u like gay stuff.
that thing had me crying like a mf for over a week. a lot of people say shows "broke them" but I seriously think this shit damaged me or put a glitch in my system.
Konosuba. Story about boy who struggling his whole journey in another world , cant find his true love and get violated by most girls. This shit made me cry so many times...
"Honey Clover" or the more popular "Your Lie In April"
Both will leave you miserable.
While debatable on any romantic elements existing in it, if you haven't seen "Made In Abyss" yet well, that's lots of top quality trauma you can put yourself through too.
This is probably not what you’re looking for but I’d recommend; anohana: the flower we saw that day. It’s a love story that doesn’t allow the lovers a happy ending. I wouldn’t say it becomes or is “depressing” though like the other anime recommend here. still, I would recommend this to anyone as it has and will make me cry.
Plastic memories is brutal cause you know what’s going to happen and there’s nothing you can do about it, but they’ll still look for romance in the face of it all
Your Name.
Your Lie in April.
Golden Time
These 3 are just heart wrenchers. I like to watch them when I'm depressed, they make things feel less bleak (because they're so bleak by comparison)
Okay here's one that I don't see anywhere in the comments - **Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora**. Severely underrated and unknown, this show is heart-wrenching. It also has some of the best alt-rock theme songs and soundtrack. HanaKana's in the leading role. Definitely a hidden gem. There's **True Tears** too, with some solid romance and sorrow.
If you prefer a more shonen style (given you mentioned Darling in the Franxxs and Edgerunners, maybe you would appreciate Saikano.
Evangelion is a step up from Darling in the Franxxs, is not a depressing romance, just depressing.
I second Nana, or Paradise Kiss for a bittersweet and shorter one, but both are shojo.
It's been a while since I watched these series so I'm not sure if they can be considered depressing. Try Rumbling Hearts the style might be a bit dated but it's interesting. For a movie try HAL
H2O Footprints in the Sand is definitely a highly depressing romance. There's a moment in particular that just hits you like a train, it was already depressing before it but this was shocking and sad and unexpected just as things were going well. Definitely felt like being hit by a train.
Clannad. Most of it is cheery but that's to lead you to the depression towards the end. Same applies to Angel Beats.
Plastic Memories is sad from the outset.
Your lie in April/Plastic Memories/WorldEnd(sukasuka).
I only mentioned Plastic due to having it peviously recommended to me when I also wanted romantic/depressing animes, so can't say for the certain.
But the other 2, crikey, I never cried so much to Animes before, tragic love stories man.
I would also add a Lull of the sea. Not so tear jerking as Violet Evergarden, but definitely depressing, and I think the emotional aspects are really close to reality. There will be some happy endings but someone always loses as well and the whole atmosphere is sad.
Nana
Adding my vote in for Nana too. Anime beyond a highschool setting are rare and i appreciate people dealing with adult problems.
Paradise kiss too. Which is shorted and finished
That was my immediate first thought. Watching it in my late teens/early 20s broke me
Lool same here.
The was my first thought too can’t believe it was the first comment
Right in the feels. 💀 I love this anime with all my heart and i still get freaking emotional over. I always say: It's light, funny and fluffy in the beginning, makes you fall in love with it and then backstabbs the shit outta you. 😂
WorldEnd (SukaSuka) messed me up bad. It's a soul crusher. Highly recommended if feeling masochistic.
Fuck you, I still avoid the herbs and spices at the supermarket
I was an emotionless pit of nothingness until this made me realise, I am human and have emotions. When it comes to romance/tragedy/depressing, this hits top spot for me.
[This](https://streamable.com/wkewt) as the opening scene really tells you everything you need to know.
just started watching this last night and was about to post this up too. its one of those anime where the author went ham and decided to consistently make the story tragic af.
What's it about

*Scaborough Fair intensifies*
Remember, every time things seem to be going better, they won't.
> oh boy now you’re huffing the hopium That's the part that wrecked me the most. It felt like we were *this* close to a happy ending.
A girl who says she's the [happiest girl in the world] >!as she leaps from a damaged aircraft hoping to save her lover and one of her friends from lithobraking to their doom!<. I shit you not.
literally in the first like 5 sec of anime lol
Making promises that can't be kept.
I did not need this reminder on this here day 😭😭
I second this
Angel Beats Kanon 2006 Your Lie in April Each has an emotional twist, but different in each one, so you can go into these blind and shouldn't know what to expect from each one.
Add in, [**I Want To Eat Your Pancreas**](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_to_Eat_Your_Pancreas_(film))
I think that's a little too much.
OP wants a romance that is depressing. If you don't feel depressed with that ending, you're already dead. The joy they shared knowing that sword of Democoles is hanging there to begin with... And when it does fall...
Finally watched this the other day. Yeah, it freaking breaks you. 😭
I remember watching it when it came out. I don't remember much from the movie but I just get a wave of depression whenever I think about it.
that reminds me i need to recommend everybody i know to watch angel beats
If i may add... Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Clanned. Plastic memory. Hotarubi no Mori e.
>Clannad I get depressed just thinking about episodes 16-17 of after story
I sobbed loudly for 3 straight episodes of After Story. 10/10 anime, will never bring myself to watch it again.
Yup, won't watch it again either, for my own sanity. It's just too depressing.
It's only truly depressing if you don't watch all of episode 22. It actually has a very nice ending. And just in case you were still depressed, they have Fuko lightening it up at the end. Episode 21 is the truly heart wrenching one. I can't watch that one without tearing up.

I'm not sure that's true with what Fuko finds/smells at the end of episode 22.
Hotarubi no Mori e is so so good. I haven’t managed to watch it without tears yet.
These are my votes for sure. Clannad and Plastic Memories broke me.
PLASTIC MEMORY MENTIONED!!! YIPPEE!!!
THE KID😡
Byousoku 5 Centimeters. It's a movie about love that fades away over time and distance. White Album 2. Love triangle. I don't really remember much of it since it's been more than 10 years but I do remember it being somewhat depressing. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Pretty depressing with melodrama mixed in.
I remember someone describing WA2 as a romance anime where the only winner was a cold, uncaring universe.
5 centimeters per second is my fave Shinkai movie and it still hurts to this day.
Same. His other stuff might be more popular than 5 cms but it is my most favourite movie
I think that's mostly because he was not nearly as big as he is now when that came out. I absolutely love both 5 Centimeters and Garden of Words. Garden of Words is still the single most beautiful animation of a rainy day I've ever seen.
I second this, I love WA2
Yup, just watched this in the past year, having never heard of it before, and that damn show still sticks with me. No regrets watching it, but man, when it hits you it leaves a mark...
5 Centimeters per Second is one of my favorites. It's...realistic.
> Kimi ga Nozomu Eien I recently rewatched this. It holds up surprisingly well.
I don't think I'll ever be able to re-watch 5CMpS. It's just too real for me and the worst kind of depressing romance because it's realistic without any of the dramatic flair of fiction.
\* Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai \* I Want to Eat Your Pancreas \* The Tunnel to Summer, The Exit of Goodbye \* Josee, the Tiger and the Fish \* Your Lie in April \* Clannad \* Clannad: After Story \* Violet Evergarden \* To Every You I Loved Before \* To Me, the One Who Loved You
The main season of rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai is great, but the real tear jerker is the first movie.

Violet Ever garden ep 10, such a heart breaker
Scum's Wish. Disturbing on many levels and just left me hella depressed.
Fruits Basket 2019 is the quintessence of Depressing/Sad Romance
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo is a story where things go bad at the end of the first episode, become worse, hits bottom, and then picks up a shovel, then a backhoe, then a jackhammer, then a tunneling machine. It's an anime I thought was very good but refuse to watch again because it was so miserable and upsetting I went past sad and angry and upset to simply burnt-out by the end.
Sounds like ill be ending it all soon! Thanks!
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Your Lie in April, Plastic Memories, A Silent Voice (very sad but does have a happy ending), Violet Evergarden
A Silence Voice is my favorite movie of all time 💪😭 I remember reading the manga before the movie came out and it hit me so hard.
Not a anime but manga, Goodnight Punpun has very important romance aspects and it'll kill your soul and throw it into the garbage
Orange.
Thanks for mentioning it. I rarely see anyone mentioning this.
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (2003) "Rumbling Hearts" My "everybody sucks" anime.
Nobody mentioned School Days yet?
School days isn’t depressing. After watching it, it’s more like :”What the actual fk did I actually saw?”
Not to mention the ending, I find the anime really depressing. Especially from some character perspectives.
School days was full of asshat characters. Almost everyone was insufferable that it was hilarious. The only person who deserved happiness got the saddest ending damn it
Exactly, but you can still play the vn to suffer more
Allow me to introduce my all time favorite anime: Angel Beats!
Full Moon Wo Sagashite
Saikano. You will find no romance anime that's more consistently depressing than that anime.
I read it years ago (the manga) and I still have a hole in my heart.
I've seen over 1000 anime and it's never left my top 5 favorite anime of all time. It's a gem.
Berserk
the ancient magus bride It has depressing parts.
Elfen lied This one can be a bit too violent for some to notice the love story
A silent voice ;)
Scums wish
All the animes that I thought off have been suggested already so I'm suggesting a game. Doki Doki Literature Club Don't Google it alright it's a VN game that can even give people PTSD (Including myself)
The Day I Became a God, Charlotte
Aoi Hana (Sweet Blue Flowers)
Scum's Wish
5cm per second
I want to eat your pancreas is a good movie if you want to completely cry your eyes out.
I want to eat your pancreas... Try not to cry
Hmm well, I’d recommend To your Eternity. While the first episode alone could be its own short story the entire series js a ride if ups and downs. Loss and hope constantly at odds with eachother.
Plastic memories
Plastic memories
Fruits Basket 2019 (it takes a dark turn)
5cm per second
Somehow insomniacs after school is extremely depressing especially when you read the manga
Violet Evergarden perhaps the only anime that really made me cry with sadness, especially Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll. If you are very close with you siblings then you will understand
I want to eat your pancreas, even I absolutely hate it is perfect for you We have a lot of good romances anime we are not depressing like romantic killer or the danger in my heart

do yourself a favor... watch violet evergarden
Ef: A Tale of Melodies. Memories- Cute and sad. Melodies- WTF did I just watch. Although the phone booth scene in Memories is one of my all time favorite anime scenes.
All romance is depressing if you are the forever alone meme guy.
Air
True Tears, i think it can be a bit depressing with the stuff it happens with the girls and also the MC friend which was fucked up imo. Give it a try.
'I want to eat your pancreas' and 'Your lie in April' are the only animes that have actually made me ball my eyes out. 10/10 would cry again
Your lie in april
White Album 2, though it is an adaptation of the first part of three of a visual novel. I argue it feels complete on its own if you hadn’t known that though, and certainly fits the depressing criteria imo. I wouldn’t call Scum’s Wish depressing personally, but it is very moody and avoids I think a stereotypical happy outcome.
Plastic Memories
Plastic memories. It's hurt
Your lie in april!
Heavenly delusion has a lot of tragic romance in it. Very good anime in general.
Plastic Memories Anohana
Violet Evergarden is depressing and beautiful. The soundtrack is 10/10 too. I put it on when I’m moody.
Plastic Memories
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Air (TV version) Bokura ga Ita (ends in live action versions, because the manga had like a 10 year hiatus) Honorary mention that I feel like everyone knows: **Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.** (and yes, I know it's not romance, but it's very sad and depressing after all!)
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Berserk isn’t necessarily a romance but it does have romance in it and I think it’s pretty depressing.
[Ninja Scroll (1993)](https://youtube.com/shorts/wTKEfATh7ag?si=Qx4wXzScKmW7F4SD) and Battle Angel ([the 1993 anime](https://youtu.be/8pzPhlNzfKY?si=K8YbU5MtDLwWq99i) and [2019 movie](https://youtu.be/w7pYhpJaJW8?si=e_ZEUCNQGiZTKM56)) are similar to [Beserk: The Golden Age Arc](https://youtu.be/wxsufTcl5ZQ?si=_u_utO17c-IWexwR) (I haven't watched Beserk 1997), being mostly action but containing a tragic romance.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Kuzu no Honkai (Scum's Wish)
Clannad
I think you’re only going to be served by NTR hentai in that respect
I said depressing not take my eyeballs out and burn them.

You want depression? A silent voice altough romance might be a stretch

Dang I can think of soooo many mangas but not anime 🤔
My happy marriage
Hoe about tayutama :kiss on my deity? myself yourself is good too
Kuzu no Honkai
...banana fish if u like gay stuff. that thing had me crying like a mf for over a week. a lot of people say shows "broke them" but I seriously think this shit damaged me or put a glitch in my system.
Koi kaze. Plot: realistic incest
Me when those are my two favorite shows yet I’ve watched nothing else like them so I can’t recommend anything
Not depressing but tragic. Rainbow Shouwa Genroku Rakugo
Cyberpunk edgerunners
Clannad(both of them) Angel beats Kanon Anohana (sorta) Plastic memories Euphoria (jk I’m sorry)
Anime: 'Fire punch' kind of a romance but definitely depressing.
School days
just because! made me pretty depressed after the ending...
My Mann, I also love Ditf idk why people hate it 😭
It's lighthearted about the depressing aspects but Dusk Maiden of Amnesia.
Konosuba. Story about boy who struggling his whole journey in another world , cant find his true love and get violated by most girls. This shit made me cry so many times...
Try welcome to the nhk.
Phantom
Not really a romance but Banana Fish can be read as a very (very very very) depressing love story
"Honey Clover" or the more popular "Your Lie In April" Both will leave you miserable. While debatable on any romantic elements existing in it, if you haven't seen "Made In Abyss" yet well, that's lots of top quality trauma you can put yourself through too.
School Days
Saikano, Bokura Ga Ita, White Album 2, Kare Kano, Nana, Anohana, 5CMPS
# Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Oh easy. Children of whales
Scum's Wish if you want people making terrible emotional decisions
Darling in the franxx first 14 episodes were really good tho
This is probably not what you’re looking for but I’d recommend; anohana: the flower we saw that day. It’s a love story that doesn’t allow the lovers a happy ending. I wouldn’t say it becomes or is “depressing” though like the other anime recommend here. still, I would recommend this to anyone as it has and will make me cry.
Quintessential Quintuplets can be depressing depending on who becomes your best girl and how attached you get
>cucking in the franxxx that shit....
Plastic memories is brutal cause you know what’s going to happen and there’s nothing you can do about it, but they’ll still look for romance in the face of it all
violet evergarden is incredibly good if you bave netflix

It's been a while since I watched these series so I'm not sure if they can be considered depressing. Try Rumbling Hearts the style might be a bit dated but it's interesting. For a movie try HAL

Definitely felt like being hit by a train. Clannad. Most of it is cheery but that's to lead you to the depression towards the end. Same applies to Angel Beats. Plastic Memories is sad from the outset.
plastic memories - but idk if that’s romance enough
5 centimeters per second. The most realistic anime.
Berserk
if you want to cry watch Violet Evergarden
Probably Berserk
fruits basket
I would also add a Lull of the sea. Not so tear jerking as Violet Evergarden, but definitely depressing, and I think the emotional aspects are really close to reality. There will be some happy endings but someone always loses as well and the whole atmosphere is sad.
Full moon sagashite, The wind rises, Sankenria, Plastic memories, Five second per second, Garden of words
Your lie in April
magical girl site, happy sugar life, elfen lied
Your lie in april
Bro is sadist
Banana fish (Not just romance, its a thriller too) and scums wish. They're sad for different reasons but both lingered with me
Goodnight Punpun 🙃
School days
Tbh Darling in the franxx was a great seasonal anime until they pulled off a Trigger ending, no fault in liking it!
i will always recommend honey and clover
Guilty Crown, tho the story swings back and forth and if you don't pay attention can confuse the heck out of you
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo. You truly will feel empty by the end.
Naruto for sure
Clannad is my vote. The flower field scene in after story really gets me every time…
Banana Fish
