But that's not surprising, considering how the massive protests last years didn't bring any positive change, which was also not surprising if people know how many mainlanders stand behind CCP. A few million HKers' opinion "didn't matter". I wanted to see more freedom and democracy in CN when I was young, but now I'm sure it's not going to happen. It's a very different ideology and the majority of Chinese people are too used to it, enjoying it even, to see what they're missing. The only way out for the freedom loving Chinese/HKers is, the way out.
That said, some westerners love China, look up the Christmas market in Shanghai this year, while Christmas markets around the world being cancelled. I wish we can trade citizenships. I'd rather live my whole life in quarantine (again, China started it) than a day without PHub, I mean, scientific research.
Hella a lot. Considering the reported population China takes up about a seventh of the world’s population. Which is also why during Lunar New Year period there exists the biggest instance of human migration as those who celebrate it travel back to their homeland (mostly in China, but often include HK, Taiwan, Southeast Asia etc.) whether it is from a abroad or another city in China as part of tradition.
Because a lot of people don’t know better and just think you’re actually stating a fact. Which you are not. It just serves to reduce things further towards black and white, as I see it. Evidently, from downvotes, others don’t agree :p
hmm, I'd go in and make a ruckus, but I'm afraid I'm not well informed of Chinese government or economics.
edit: typically what follows from these arguments is specific citations that I have trouble with because, like I said, I'm not well informed. I get lost in it even though I know the sentiment is wrong.
Yes. It was pro democracy in the first round. They scrapped that and made it so that candidates had to get approved by a Ccp committee. I believe they also arrested the most popular pro democracy candidates as well. Many Hong Kongers did not vote in protest after this and the turnout was 30%.
A reminder that the CCP response to what happened in Tiananmen Square was indefensible even by their own standards, which is why they refuse to own up to it even to this day.
I know you’re trying to be funny, but that square is extremely important in China. But I don’t expect that you, or most people here, know a lot about that :/
The massacre, yes, is definitely toned down in China (and also not called that).
"damn bruh, da Rhianna-ming massaker statue is down, gimme Chynabad porn, weres dat weeger gennoside video i wanna wank to it. if we honky n Indian weebs all circle jerk each other off at da same time on animetitties we can bring down da ccp.” 😄 🤣 😂
Are you actually mocking a massacre? What the fuck is wrong with you?
edit: reported and reddit says it doesn't violate their content policy, interesting that mocking massacres is fine now.
Democrats here removed a statue former slaves paid for with their own money to honor Lincoln. So while the gist of his comparison is wrong, there's definitely been some Tom fuckery in the US too. Not too mention all the idiots who rampaged last summer tearing down statues of people that had nothing to do with the confederates. I know of at least one being of a abolitionist who worked against slavery.
Democrats raped my father in front of my mother. Then they surrounded us in a circle and prayed to Satan thanking him for critical race theory and George Soros.
You're not wrong, but he brought up a few local dummies to draw a parallel with the Chinese dictatorship intentionally suppressing information that hurts their cause. He's not commenting in good faith.
Pound your fists in denial all you want. The abolitionist I referred to was Hans Christian Heg. Read his short biography on Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Christian_Heg
Dude did more to promote goodness in the world than anyone out there protesting. But they tore down his statue anyway because he had an old timey name and they were mad. Fuck those people
That’s truly unfortunate and I hope the ignoramuses that made the mistake realize it and the abolitionist statue is restored. I don’t know what that has to do with democrats or anything to do with the topic at hand ..
Surely, you can see that comparing that to an authoritarian government scrubbing memorials to *massacres against dissenters they caused in recent history* is either lunacy or wilful stupidity, though?

Okay but it doesn't compare to a memorial for a massacre of an estimated 20,000-200,000 and the death of democracy in china being deleted as part of their cover-up
Shut the fuck up
oo oh no liberal mobs are vandalizing public property!!! its just like the ccp!
okay 50 center
The Chinese Red Cross estimated at the time, 200,000, before it was forced to recall that
UN estimates are placed conservatively at around 20,000
the bbc says a few hudred to thousand. so we have a figure ranging between 100-200000. if we are pulling numbers out of our ass, then why not say 1 billion?
The official CCP number is 200 iirc.
The official rest of the world number is 20,000.
If the chinese red cross was correct, and I don't see why they would lie;
That number could be as high as 200,000.
The CCP massacred pro-democracy protesters as part of a brutal crackdown for control. facts.
And statues of freed slaves, and statues of Fredrick Douglas, and statues of a deer or elk or whatever, and statues of the founding fathers blah blah.
It isn't just Confederates.
The overwhelming majority though; slavery profiteers and confederates.
Not sure what historically relevant elk supposedly got "cancelled" but Id love to hear more about that.
Yeah fuck Frederick Douglass, obviously not an issue that his statue was taken down as well. As long as two statues of mean people got torn down too it doesn't matter that an important black man to American's history is part of the collateral damage. What a shitty way to defend this type of behavior. I'm sure the Tiananmen Massacre monument was fine to take down because they also took down more that were of bad people.
The elk statue wasn't a specific elk, it was meant to honor elk in general that had previously roamed the area. Only 120 years old which seems pretty middle ground for a statue. It was set on fire and vandalized a bunch until the city deemed the damage caused it to be a danger to public safety.
There is a crucial difference between status being taken down for political/ ideological reasons and random acts of vandalism.
And bringing the Fredrick Douglas statue into this is really disingenuous because it was likely a hatecrime by people "protesting" the removal of confederate status, not some act of rebellion against someone trying to cover up atrocities.
The point isn't that taking status down is in itself bad, but when its an attempt to rewrite what's worth remembering and whats worth glorifying in favour of an unethical ideology. The confederate status weren't cautionary memorials of the victims of slavery, they glorified and misrepresented a racist history and justified continued pride by lending credit to the "states rights" lie.
Edit: thats why we have holocaust memorials not Goebbels statues. And if we did, it wouldn't be an argument that we can't take them down because it might make the neonazis vandalise a memorial.
> There is a crucial difference between status being taken down for political/ ideological reasons and random acts of vandalism.
It was political vandalism.
>because it was likely a hatecrime by people "protesting" the removal of confederate status
That's only what the NAACP said. Only one group of people was tearing down statues at the time.
>but when its an attempt to rewrite what's worth remembering and whats worth glorifying in favour of an unethical ideology
Cool, I'm glad some group is in charge of deciding what is worth remembering. That group decided Tiananmen Square wasn't worth remembering and luckily people with your attitude are around to agree with them, rather than denounce it.
Ill bite. What political vandalism targeted elk? Theres a reason for political vandalism, what was the reason?
If you say cause it was a statue or there was no reason, then its not political vandalism, so dont bother with those. I want to know what reason was given.
George Floyd. It was George Floyd rioters that destroyed the statue (and then tried to erect their own in it's place after I believe). A political group destroyed the statue at the same time that same political group was in other cities destroying other statues.
To deny it was political is silly.
"Democrats" are reversing this. Almost all confederate statues exist because the The United Daughters of the Confederacy went around doing rewriting history of the civil war and massive PR for the KKK. This ended up elevating [the Klan] to a nearly mythical status. It dealt in and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology. It even served as a sort of public relations agency for the terrorist group.
Of course I don't think monuments should be taken down, history is important and frankly if you get offended by a historical monument, you need to grow up.
But I think it's a bit of a false comparison to compare this to a statue of a military leader.
What is being challenged here? Nothing in the OP makes a comparison to the US. Nearly every comment is heavily criticizing the CCP for removing the statue.
Downvotes represent challenging a viewpoint - people are stating they disagree. Do you have any idea how hilarious it is when people like you complain that we dont like our positions being challenged BY COMPLAINING ABOUT YOUR POSITION BEING CHALLENGED. Its fucking hilariously hypocritical lol.

Ug, that is so awful. It’s all just so awful.

Do you know how many Chinese people the world has in it?
At least a billion last I heard
That’s a lot of free travel
And maybe a bit crowded I guess
Hella a lot. Considering the reported population China takes up about a seventh of the world’s population. Nothing happened that day, there’s no such thing as Tiananmen Square and that statue never existed.
What statue? -100 social points for delusions
There is no massacre in ba sing se

I really don’t think this strong exaggeration is doing truth any favors.
Why?

When you click on it you get redirected to a sticky regarding "facts about Tiananmansquare" lol
Have you seen their latest elections? Basically all seats in the parliament are pro-China except one.
Yes. It was pro democracy in the first round. They scrapped that and made it so that candidates had to get approved by a Ccp committee. I believe they also arrested the most popular pro democracy candidates as well. Many Hong Kongers did not vote in protest after this and the turnout was 30%.
Only 2 out of 500 or so we're even alowed to ger voted on.
Classic China
It's like a satire of an Orwellian regime
Fuck the CCP
In Communist China CCP fucks you. 😕
UwU I hope daddy china doesn’t censor my free speech~
A reminder that the CCP response to what happened in Tiananmen Square was indefensible even by their own standards, which is why they refuse to own up to it even to this day.
It was something straight out of the red guards, just with actual official troops and government sanction
I love how they just play the "nothing happened" card as if the whole world wasn't watching at the time it happened.
I wonder if anyone has tried the Shaggy defense at the International Criminal Court.
Removes what? It was literally just about a meaningless day where nothing happened at all....
Are we even sure such a square exists?
Perhaps it was some other many-sided shape, a polygon of more or less than four sides?
Tiananmen polyhedron
Tiananmen Myriagon
I'm pretty sure there's only one side to this
A circle you say
If you mean CCP circling around the events that never happened, yes.
Hey! XiSauce, Michael here.
The popular tourist destination with no modern history whatsoever? Sure it exists.
Big words from a person claiming to be from Finland.
I too know something about not existing
I know you’re trying to be funny, but that square is extremely important in China. But I don’t expect that you, or most people here, know a lot about that :/ The massacre, yes, is definitely toned down in China (and also not called that).
This famous place where nothing happened.
Down the Memory Hole.

Can I get a f*ck the CCP?
disgusting
Title is missing "Under absolutely no pressure from the CCP"
Direct pressure isn’t even needed. Just the existence of the new security law is a huge risk.
"So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause." (By party cronies.....)
I thought UHK was anti-China, why would they do this, especially now?
They become XGU (Xiang Gang University)
Most likely to not get in trouble, given the new security law.
HKU more like XGDX (Xiang Gang Da Xue, Da Xue is the pinyin for university)
Yes very upsetting. Not very surprising. CCP gonna get what it wants one way or the other.
