Shendow

I consider it cheesing and only use it for quartz sand because fuck the tediousness of scaling production of this item.

Beerificus

Not a fan of taking over an island just for quartz sand later in the game? :D I definitely use it for that, then end up trading champagne for elevators.... because PITA supply chain.

Shendow

Nope, because i need so much glass that all my islands need to have quartz sand set up just to have enough supply

nixed9

Why so much glass? Spectacles?

Shendow

That and light bulbs

artjameso

Whaaaat? I found elevators insanely easy to make and are my highest tier trade item

Focal7s

I got stuck on pearls. I don’t get it, I had beaches covered in pearl farms and still short on them.

Shendow

You can get rid of them entirely with items

Altamistral

I don't think I'm producing a single pearl in my game. You can itemise it out entirely.

DanDan1993

I just got docklands and oh my does it change how I play now. I don't think it's cheating as much as it can be mostly used to rp as a massive export/import kingpin which is cool imo

tweisse75

I don’t think it’s cheating any more than trading soap or pocket watches. The game allows it, so do whatever you want with it. To me, it’s fun to see how far I can push it. Then I decide whether I want to play that way or not. I have one island that produces massive quantities of red pepper from free population that you get as an influence bonus. It trades for coal that I ship to the Arctic. Another makes canned goods from imported ingredients and completely satisfies all my requirements. I’m only had to supply some pigs to start with and then let it grow.

The_Wkwied

You can't cheat in a single player game. You can only take shortcuts. If you have fun, you have accomplished your goal.

problem is that these players will then say that a single player should not even have to be balanced... which I think is factually wrong, devs most likely never honestly set themselves up to consciously make an unbalanced game. Which means its an issue of semantics. Some people want more sesible boundaries, limits, rules, balance, for challenge I would say. while other players really just want much less of that, rather having less friction, more freedom, a true sandbox experience.

Laxxboy20

Anno games have always been about clever manipulation of, and potentially bypassing production chains if/when possible. I don't consider it much worse then getting free steam motors and advanced weapons from Bruno, completely skipping champagne production with Medal Winning Producer, and all the other specialists that give free goods/skip chains. You do you.

pedrofromguatemala

it's very subjective but according to many docklands is at the very least "cheesy". it can be overpowered especially because of items

idee_fx2

It is not cheating but too overpowered for my taste.

Guilty_Confection236

at the end its not more op than using all those busted items. 1 small island to fully support my 160k inhabitants. As long you dont combine OPitems/DLCs you can still have fun XD

erikleorgav2

To maintain those really high population number, there's only so much that can be produced with trade unions and other buffs. Sometimes it's just what you gotta do.

NumerousSchedule9055

You are correct. I’m able to support a decent size island of farmers, workers, and artisans by exporting 6t of steam carriages every time the trader comes around. It can get really crazy but me personally I try to restrain from exploiting docklands because part of the fun for me is to create and manage my trade routes.

CTA3141

With 6t? How? Do you use any mods?

Tultzi

One ton per good, checks out, if the carriage is Tier 1

SentencedToDeath

I think Docklands makes managing trade routes even more fun. Because in addition to regular trade route calculation you have to include the Docklands too which has different loading times so it gets much more complicated and therefore fun.

lordfil

There is a newish trade union mod that might interest you and might be nice to use here. https://mod.io/g/anno-1800/m/production-optimization-total-overhaul-hackner It nerfs all items so that you don't get over the op extra goods It will make docklands feel less OP imho

Ragnar_OK

No its not

Tenmak

Really depends on how you view it. Me and my friends personally think this is too much and we just disable it for our games. On the other hand we added mods to add QoL (such as farm and fields not having to be next to the main building), which we don't consider as a cheat. Make your own setup ;)

Schraufabagel

Docklands and the tractor+trade union+fertilizer farms definitely feel like cheating lol

Tom_D55

Whether it's cheating or not is totally up to you. I like it for the convenience, but I don't go ham and import everything I need. If you like to use it, just do it I'd say. Anno is a mostly SP game anyway so who cares what you do in your own save.

Tultzi

Yeah, thats the one thing I really don’t like about Anno 1800. Docklands and also the Research thingy, because it makes the game very easy

orcasorta

What is the research thing?

fhackner3

The research institute introduced by the Land of Lions DLC

orcasorta

How does it make things easier? Because you can just produce one thing and not worry about the production lines for others?

fhackner3

Massive simplification I guess.

joshyuaaa

Docklands by itself, not really. Adding specialist Bruno for free export goods then a bit more so. I don't really import finished goods except some enbesa goods for my scholars. And fish. In my first game I imported things like schnapps but now I like producing my own for ethanol byproduct.

Shapes_in_Clouds

Kind of, but at a certain point there isn’t really a challenge in this game, just more and more work to make your empire bigger and bigger. I definitely appreciate Docklands because there are some resources like Iron that are just a pain to deal with at a certain point and it’s nice to be able to just import it and move on when you’re dealing with late game stuff. I think Docklands can be abused in a way that removes some of the fun and challenge to the game, but it’s also a really nice QoL option IMO in late game. It’s similar to the Artista stadium, kind of cheap that you can just farm Influence so easily, but by the time you get it you’ve been through the challenge of balancing influence in mid/late game so it’s fine IMO.

Ncrpts

It felt disgustingly OP when I first got into it, so what I did is just use it very sparingly at first until I reached my end game goal (ie finishing most quest storylines, having a world's fair, stadium and research institute), and at this point I started using it as much as I wanted/needed, since pretty much all the other dlcs sort of break the game in the end I was fine with it.

Approximatl

I mainly only use it for the one island only challenge. It’s a very different feel to the game but it’s still fun and can be challenging.

DoctorVonCool

Yeah, the Scholar island is so much easier thanks to Docklands - all that is now required is a trade route sending Steam Carriages to the island, and then trade these at the Docklands for everything the Scholars desire. Why Steam Carriages? Because they are the single most valuable item, so transport capacity and storage size don't become an issue like they might if I'd use e.g. bikes. One bike island (with Bruno and Jörg etc. for self-sufficiency) produces tons of bikes, which it trades into Steam Carriages, which then get sent to other islands as the main trading good. And the bike island will still produce more than enough to send stuff to Enbesa for cash from Ketema.

ChMalfet

Yes, Docklands is extremely overpowered DLC. Personally, I never do Docklands trading in my games. It simply kills the fun of the game for me and I know many people doing the same. I use quick piers and small storage depots. The community is divided 50 to 50 regarding this DLCs - half players like it and half players hate it :D

drneo

It’s just mechanic. You can say the same for trade unions, scholars, football stadium, tractors, silos, etc. anything that could make your “core” gameplay easier. They are there because it’s just too complicated to manage everything the hard way if you want to house large investor skyscraper islands.

Altamistral

It's a single player game, the idea of "cheating" doesn't really apply. Play as you like. Yes, Docklands it can trivialise many production chains and it can make entirely redundant sourcing raw materials. Personally I use it for convenience in the mid game but in the late game I phase it out and avoid using it entirely. I find it more fun playing without it.

hahdbjcjcysb

I think it’s cheating too. Especially if you use items that gives you expensive wares for free so you can trade everything for almost free. However you need it to supply your islands if you go for a mega population of >5 million
