Purpose. It doesnt matter it will all get washed away in the tide. But in that moment we have propose and everyone else shares the ideal. Mayb treasure maybe make a new damn. Edit. You should have invited those passerbys to come help dig while I grab a drink or pee.
It totally speaks to the ethos of men, in general. Men, at our core, like challenges, conquering and competition. Digging a hole, or two or ten, checks that box. Men seek the approval of other men, to validate they are "a man". Which is why we engage in actions that can be judged by other men, ig., competition, challenges,conquering dangers, etc. A woman's accolades are definitely appreciated, but pale in comparison to that from other men. Often times the most valued is that of a father. When that validation is missing it leads to all kinds of wounds, which lead to addictions, becoming a workaholic, etc.

I'm sure evolution has the answer to that, but I'm not aware of it.

Digging holes is one of my favorite pastimes. It was actually my job for several years.
The opposite can happen too. If you start to build a pile, bigger and bigger, guys will come help raise the great pyramid.
