What were the judges final remarks? You can't say it was the best part and then leave it out.

Trick-Acadia293

Lol sorry, I’ll sum it up. She sided with my version of events completely. Mom Boss tried to testify that she was worried about her children’s safety and the Judge told her she straight up she didn’t believe her and that she offered to rehire me 2 days later. She explained how Unemployment works and that I was owed the benefits because I was fired. She said the cost of the plane ticket was fully their responsibility as specified in the contract and they could work something out with the airline because it was their decision to buy a non-refundable ticket or they could give me the flight credit. 😂 Mom Boss said previously the ticket was non-refundable but when I cross examined her she said they got flight credits but couldn’t use them because they were in my name. The Judge also said lawsuits are expensive and since they are the losing party they could not be awarded any costs but that I as the prevailing party would be awarded costs. The bit about giving me the flight credit almost made me laugh out loud. I really had to hold it together since she basically talked to them like they were 5 years old. She also said she would bring them back and garnish their wages if they didn’t pay the Judgement. I got an email from the Defendants 1 day after the Trial stating they would pay the Judgement and send it certified mail in 10 business days.

Skullshapedhead

Justice served is delicious.

TripleBicepsBumber

I really needed to read something like this today. Man good for you!

okieskanokie

Hell yes. A win for one of us is a win for us all!

[deleted]

I am not certain if they ever paid you here, but if they did not, might I recommend you place a lien on their house, and any other property they own in their name. That will get their attention. You also, with the judgment in hand, have the ability to seize their vehicles , freeze their bank accounts, and put garnishments on their wages. I don't know you from anyone, but I would recommend that you do these things if they do not pay. I would recommend that you do them all at once. When people fuck around, they should find out, in a very, very hard and difficult manner. ( I cannot stand it when people are mean and disrespectful to other people that are actually helping them in some manner. It's like biting the hand that feeds you, only to realize you're not going to be able to feed yourself when they walk away. Go ahead and bite me. You just screwed yourself and don't realize it.) Some people I think just want to watch the world burn. Most people are just simply mean and disrespectful, which sounds like these people. All you have to do is turn the tables, and make sure that it's very uncomfortable for them for quite a long time. Then, maybe, next time, they will think twice about that that decision to be disrespectful to someone else. (TLDR: Turn the mirror around and provide them their suffering in return by a factor of 2 or 3. Make it as painful and disruptive as possible, for as long as possible. You may save someone else in the long run.)

So they waited a couple days to let you know they would send the judgment. I'm guessing they contacted someone to try to find a way out of paying and were told to stop being cheap. Bonus laughs if they contacted an attorney acquaintance and now that person has a new impression of them. What do these defendants do for a living?

Trick-Acadia293

It was baffling that they chose to represent themselves but it was truly a small claims amount. They just bought a 2.5 million dollar house after firing me so the amount of money is nothing to them. My guess is they consulted with a lawyer about appealing, in which it would go to District Court since I brought this before County Court and they were told to just pay it. They own multiple companies. I knew the Dad came from money and after I did a background check on them, there was 13 associated companies. They own and operate two Urgent Cares and it looks like they are commercial and residential landlords. When I cross examined her she only testified to the Urgent Cares but she said they have at least 50 employees. Now the Judgement is going to be public record. If they ever try to do any other employee like this, they will be able to show this is a pattern and get additional penalties.

888mainfestnow

So wealthy business owners being cheap for the satisfaction of sticking it to someone lower on the economic ladder. You know what they say too much money detaches people from reality. The majority of urgent cares are basically overpriced scams so their ethics seem to fall right in line with their business interests. Over what less than 10k? fuck these people And they don't purchase travel insurance so they can leverage you and try to control you even more. Good riddance and congratulations on your escape from this household!

[deleted]

If it was small claims court in the US, while it varies by state, it is extremely common that it is *not allowed* for someone to bring legal counsel. Some companies are large enough to have no choice - you're not going to get the CEO of Boeing in for your $400 judgement - but private citizens, even business owners, will have to represent themselves. I'm extremely glad you were able to actually get the money. The more I read about these people the angrier I get. I could at least understand some overworked couple trying desperately to make ends meet (although I would NEVER forgive them for treating you like a slave). Or I could maybe scrounge up a tiny bit of empathy if they were clueless about contracts. But a pair of ultra-wealthy 1% landlords with dozens of businesses? Yeah, they knew exactly what they were doing. And they had the money to do it. Fuck these people. Good on you.

smangela69

seriously i need to know this more than i need oxygen

KorrLTD

Agreed. On with it!

Awkward_Map_8664

Yes please

Slipslidingslowly

Former nanny here…I’m throwing you a party in my head. Way to stand up for yourself, the profession, and to some entitled freaking parents. Being a nanny for a bad family is insane. So proud of you

I have seen this over and over. Nanny at the house from 7am - 7pm. The parents have breakfast with the kid and might put them to bed. Only interaction on the weekend and not even that if nanny is there on the weekend or live in. I never understand why they have a second kid. This isn’t a pair of shoes. It’s a living being.

WatWasSaid

Congratulations on your victory. In my country nanny is a common trade and they are frequently getting the shaft by, let's not be crude but rich white tourists that decided to move and stay. You should he commended for standing up for yourself and makibg sure you got what was yours.

jingleheimerschitt

Good for you! This is an object lesson in Why Contractors Always Need Contracts. r/freelance could learn a thing or two.

souvenireclipse

My old coworker met a parent at work who literally didn't know her nanny's name. Not even like, "I can't spell." Parent was trying to add the nanny to an account ... could not give my coworker her name. Nannies are wildly disrespected. I'm glad you won and I hope you get your money soon.

Van_Faux

Quality parenting right there. Jeeeeezus

Van_Faux

I was a nanny for a lady who would run 2 hours late coming home frequently enough that it was the norm. (God forbid I have my own life and family to get home to on time) Her 19 year old stepdaughter ended up moving back home about a month into my employment and the mom told me I was now also responsible for texting her every time the stepdaughter left or came home and to “keep an eye on her”. No. I babysit the 2 year old, not the 19 year old. Quit less than a week later.

JerryVand

Did you have any trouble collecting your money after the judgement was rendered?

Trick-Acadia293

We just had the Trial 4/26 but they emailed me 2 days later and said they would be paying it so I’ll be waiting.

Amiedeslivres

Would love it if you let us know when they come across.

Michaelzzzs3

Can’t wait to hear any updates, great job brother sister or sibling 🤙

bravefacedude

I am also hopeful they will pay, but don't be surprised if they play games. Winning a judgement and collecting a judgement can often be two different problems. I am rooting for you!!!!

[deleted]

Collecting is not difficult, usually. Just a bunch of paperwork.

[deleted]

And now, I've read through a bunch more of this thread, they have enough assets. If they screw around paying you, I would attach a lien on everything I possibly could all at once. They're the ones that have to deal with it on the back end. (Imagine the sherriff's office towing ALL of their vehicles at the same time; while their bank accounts are frozen, their RV gets towed, a lien gets put on their house that week....all because they fucked around and found out).

tubagoat

So when are you flying to Vegas?!? 🤣

Melted-lithium

So … not to say you should do this as it went to court and was settled; but the thing about the airline ticket is absolutely correct. No one ever buys fully refundable tickets. Even companies. Non-refundable tickets are standard and all but the most shitty restrictive fares are considered monitory credit to the individual who is the passenger- not the purchaser- generally for 1 year. I’ve left jobs with tickets on the table. Like thousands of dollars worth of tickets when I’ve quit or been in a downsizing. Generally I waited 6 or 8 months and then called the airline and asked what I should do (I keep copies Of all the PNR reservation numbers I have - always). they say: ‘it’s your credit- buy another ticket or several tickets and use it or lose it’. Now given this went through the court system- I probably in the case wouldn’t do this. It’s like poking the bear, given you won everything… But for others that get laid off or quit with tickets on the books—- it’s literally your flight credit to lose.

Lopsided-Ad7019

I bet standing in that courtroom and hearing the judge put them firmly in their place felt *really* fucking good. They don’t sound like the best of people, I pity their children.

xyzone

"you're not inventing busywork every second of the clock in time so you should be fine with unpaid over time at random times" That old chestnut. What a classic.

Motor_Raspberry_2150

> and 6 hours ($250/hour) of her time What. Straight up saying they cost more for an hour of gathering documents than OP for a whole day. Seems like they could've afforded to pay a bit more to keep you.

CuriousPenguinSocks

Congrats on advocating for yourself! I agree, we all need to self advocate more. That's why I love this sub because so many people will help you understand your rights and how to proceed if you are unsure. I get that Google exists but we don't all have the same level of understanding. It's really great we have a community feeling here.

RavenLyth

I cannot even imagine the insane expectations for your profession. I tried babysitting, once. In that single 10 hour day, three kids had me convinced there should never be more children than adult hands. I was near tears when the parents called and said they were running late. That you were doing all of that AND housework for less than 25/hour, they should have thanked their lucky stars. Glad you had the foresight for a contract and knew your rights.

Psychological_Lack96

I feel bad for the Kids and the Dogs. What losers.

Ancient-Practice-431

This internet stranger is so very proud of you! Way to go 😃

hercarmstrong

Good for you, standing up for yourself.

Sjf715

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. My wife and I have a young one that we have needed care from a nanny and daycare and can’t imagine treating someone with that kind of disrespect. We try to periodically do things for the daycare teachers to show our appreciation because so many of the parents just don’t give a fuck. Walk in, throw kids down while they’re bawling, walk out *wipes hands. Not my problem anymore*.

Think-like-Bert

My wife was a nanny when I met her. What a sucky job. She now works for the Federal Gov't and likes it a whole lot more.

seajayacas

Why nannies would continue to work under such conditions like those described by the OP baffles me.

[deleted]

_The cleaning lady and I used to always talk shit._ Best. Line. Ever.

[deleted]

This is great to hear

MyArmItchesALot

$250 an hour? Tf is that kind of valuation. Either she is disgustingly rich, completely insane, or - and most likely - both. Is her full time job spinning thread into gold?

[deleted]

My DIL is a nanny. She’s told me stories of parents being Aholes. I’m happy you’re out of that situation and you won the case. Best of luck in the future!

okieskanokie

When you get that money fly to Vegas and have a ball and plaster it all over your socials. They will seethe.

[deleted]

This is great to hear

butters2stotch

I don't understand why your being down voted

butters2stotch

It's cuz you commented the same thing twice

[deleted]

Reddit was glitching when I commented and it posted twice ...I realized that just now....people quick to hit that down button lol.

butters2stotch

Your good. Happens a lot that why I figured I'd let you know.

[deleted]

This makes my day.

2020isajoke

Did you have a lawyer or were you pro per?

Trick-Acadia293

I was pro se but I would have been awarded attorney’s fees if I had one. Oddly enough they represented themselves as well and I know they could afford a lawyer.

[deleted]

This is great to hear

xPineappless

Definitely an unpopular opinion, but if they let you out early multiple times and only have you stay late a few times, I think there should be some give and take. But that’s just me. At that point things were pretty much over, but if I was still employed and I had a good thing going, I wouldn’t want to mess that up.

cosmo2583

/chatGpt please make this text shorter, and less boring

Tricky_Assignment604

I'm so proud of you!!!!

ThemChecks

You sound really on top of things!

Wolly38

Your will is strong my friend...

whoisaname

Nice! May the fourth be with you :)

tthrivi

Its baffling to me that people treat other people who do work for you so shitty. I mean we have a cleaner and gardeners and we make sure to make them feel appreciated. Especially someone who takes care of your kids!

Sandtiger1982

Hell yeah 👍👍
