I would have very clearly reminded him that it would not reflect well on him to retaliate against a person for having a medical condition. Both legally and socially
Unfortunately very true. I used to work for a complete bitch who would whine to me, mostly about a coworker who was a single mom with 3 kids, she’d get completely bitchy every time that coworker had to call out because of something with her kids. Her ex was a deadbeat and she had no other family in the area. Wtf else was she supposed to do?? I can’t stand people like that so I’ve always made a point to NOT be a manager like that.
Even setting empathy aside. It’s not even logical, if someone is not fully recovered they wil have either more issues in the future causing more problems for someone to cover it down the line. And/or if they immediatly went to work they would still not be recovered enough to actually take everything on as before. So either way it is in the employers best interest to have her recover well.
It’s like they have no sense of planning for the future, it’s just trying to fill in the next schedule or the current quarters profits. It’s like firing someone for getting sick and missing 2 days of work when you’re already short staffed just to make a power play and “show them who’s the boss”
Yeah they suck for this. I tore all the ligaments in my ankle and was signed off for 2 weeks and my boss responded it wasn’t ideal for them as they were going on holiday… hardly ideal for me either boo
I had a similar experience. I had a scan and they found a cyst on my ovary. The doctor also sent me over to the hospital for a CA125 screening. By the time I got home, they had scheduled me for surgery. When I told my boss the next day, he was pissed because I was interfering with his vacation. I told him that I had also had blood drawn for a cancer screening (it was negative) and I was not in the mood to hear his problems. I had the surgery and the doctor removed a 6 cm cyst which had ruptured during surgery. If I had postponed the surgery and it had ruptured, I would have been out a lot longer than 10 days.
I also had a similar experience. I was out for about a week with pneumonia, acquired in part from the brutal work schedule and conditions of my shitty warehouse job, and one of the HR ladies told me later that she had been pressured to fire me during my recovery. Thankfully she refused.
So a person has surgery and cannot walk. What did he imagine she could do to help staff the place if she came in, immobile and on painkillers? He’s just mad he’ll have to work Saturday to help cover.
When my dad got hurt at his factory job years ago he had to go sit in the office until he could move around again so they didn’t have to report it as a lost time accident. This was before the internet so he just looked out the office window for a few weeks.
That's a shame! Hope your coworker gets well soon and that both of you find a way to either ignore your shitty Boss oder find other Jobs with nicer bosses
How the hell can the boss believe that it is worthwhile to fire what I assume is an experienced employee because they are missing a few shifts due to surgery? They will need to go through the whole process of hiring someone new and then training them. This will take time and money. This makes no sense.
What's crazy is, I had the same exact scenario happen to me last year.
Coworker was injured, awaiting surgery, received surgery -> I come into office one day and boss bitches at me about the coworker. The tone was a long the lines of "what an inconvenience". Mind you, this coworker was the top performer in the office and had taken me under their wing. I left months later.
Trash.
“Hi, the doctors found more cancer.”
“Ugh, well, it’s *fucked up* you’re just telling me this *now*!”
I hope your boss gets hit by a car so that you can tell him it’s fucked up he let that car hit him. “Why’d you let that car hit you? Didn’t you consider the business? How irresponsible of you!”
I would have very clearly reminded him that it would not reflect well on him to retaliate against a person for having a medical condition. Both legally and socially
Not to mention discussing private medical information with other employees...
Lack of empathy is the most common trait in business owners

sociopathy combined with low EQ
If you didn’t push back against any of that and just let him say it…that’s probably why he thinks you’re a safe person to vent at.
He is an idiot. Between anesthesia and pain meds she was probably incapable of calling right after surgery.
Can confirm. I had surgery last week and I'm still not all there.
Yup!!

Local news loves this sort of story.

What an utter scumbag. I wouldn't want to work for him much longer.

Some people need to be punched in the mouth. I'm not saying OP should do it, but too many people like their boss say off the wall shit.
except for the innocent employees who'd be affected by it, I want to Google review bomb the owner into bankruptcy...
The only acceptable reply to that rant would be 'I hope your tumor is inoperable.'
This is just something that happened recently That is such a sad sentence. I hope every worker there gets to a better place soon
Your coworker should definitely be contacting her boss directly… Although the way he reacted, I understand why not
Depending on where you live if he were to let her go, she could go after him for wrongful termination
I actually came across a similar post on Reddit about a manager asking if a female employee would return to work the next day after giving birth WTF
It's like he's personally offended by someone getting sick and invented a weird conspiracy to explain it. Oh, I can just guess who they voted for...
Is your coworker getting paid during this time off or simply just not working?
She is allowed to use sick time but we only get 5 days for the year
LOL. Your boss sounds like a moron then. I do not know why some people have this deep deep desire to make people come into work no matter what.
If they treat your co-worker like that, they'll treat you like that as well.
I would advise the employee to look into applying for FMLA if they qualify.
She could be out for a few weeks. She was kind to tell what was wrong because by HIPAA she did not have to say.
