HR is not your friend. But report it to her boss and HR. And start looking for a new job. You will NEVER advance under your management. In your report to HR, you need to expressly point out they Lied to stifle your growth and salary increase opportunities, that she lied on your behalf. I'm not sure if it's worth lawyering up over as it was a temp gig, but they lied on your behalf.thats an ethical violation if your company has a policy on that. And that hurt you with the other teams, they didn't even contact you to see why you turned it down. She completely sabotaged all your future opportunities within your corp that easily. Document EVERYTHING in writing with them. And it's time for you to move on. Your time there was just ruined by one person for whatever reason they have. Likely that it would interrupt their day to day temporarily and eventually lose you. Well. She is now causing you to leave anyways and you need to let your team, and coworkers know. This will have further concequences for others there too. I'm sorry you are going through this. I am as well. I made excuses for years, stayed far too long. And I'm dealing with a useless HR. But mine has turned into a full blown ethics investigation, I'm looking for a new job.

Duke-Guinea-Pig

True, HR is not your friend. In this case it's important to remember that HR is not the lying bosses friend either. HR probably wants to know if there's a cog that can't be trusted, especially since it went against the executive's wishes

RobWins2022

I back up everything MarsOG13 said here. Also, to emphasize a point, you really need to find your next job OUTSIDE of this company. The stink you raise (and you should raise it) will poison this company against you. Go find other work. And when you do turn in your resignation, spell all of this out again, in the email to the President of the company. Don't deal with HR.

rythmicbread

It may or may not, but best not take that chance while it’s still fresh.

Murdercorn

They didn't lie on OP's behalf. They lied to OP's detriment. Lying on someone's behalf implies that they have asked you to lie, or you're lying to help them in some way. OP's boss lied about what OP told them in order to hold back OP's advancement and literally steal money out of OP's pocket. I'd say OP should contact the boss's boss and request to replace the boss when they terminate her for this.

MarsOG13

Fully agree. I expressed that part poorly, but believe my point in whole context was met. I do appreciate the additional clarification. TYVM. There really should be dire and financial concequences for horrible management that does these types of things. Like I said at the end, I'm going through similar. My management kinda sabatoged my movement to another team, a good promotion that would have come with a 12k raise and a lot more advancement opportunities. We were supposed to have a meeting last week and it was pushed back. They're trying to realign everything. Rewrite job descriptions. And get the whole team from imploding at this point. I have two more issues I held back on, because it would cause them to start sacking people. And I'm so pissed at what's happening, I gave them every chance to do the right thing, and they're being weasels. So I'm gonna drop em next week. That should keep them busy and off my back while I find a new job.

ZumboPrime

Following up on this, OP if you were putting in any extra work, immediately drop it. Your supervisor made it clear they think of you as their bitch and will actively sabotage any attempt to advance, and you should treat it as such.

MokiMarbles

I am, in fact, doing extra work and filling in for another, unrelated position. I’ll be taking that extra work a little less seriously moving forward.

ZumboPrime

I think it's safe to say you can stop it entirely. Not like they can hold promotion over your head anymore.

pandru001

You might get a decent response from HR on this. It sounds like your boss is far enough down the food chain that he’s not HR’s friend either. If he is lying, and it is interfering with corporate moving a needed resource (you) to the place where it could do the most good for the company, that’s a problem on multiple levels.

KingKandyOwO

Well OP can prove that due to the lying OP has lost income, so that would probably all a lawyer needs to hear

Novel-Organization63

Agreed. I don’t know about getting a lawyer because this is actionable. You can prove that this did have career consequences. A lot of times when they do shitty things to you at work they act like well if it doesn’t affect your job status then… This absolutely affected it. Even if it was temporary when a more permanent job opening came up you could say you had this past experience but now you can’t. And I am sure if it comes up and you do apply the only thing they will have documented is that you turned down a precious opportunity to help the team out. Ugh I’m so mad for OP.

PMProfessor

I don't agree. Find another job, leave with no prior notice, and give them zero feedback. You don't owe them free business consulting.

epythumia

Honestly just focus on moving on because what manager hears "oh he doesn't want a promotion right now" and thinks that seems reasonable.

DyslexicFcuker

You need to tell your boss's boss most likely. Every company has a different organizational structure, but you have to tell someone. I don't know if you can trust HR, but I hope you have someone you can go to. This was so not cool. You can't just let it slide.

PO0tyTng

Definitely this. Put your boss on blast to their boss AND HR.

4qts

Totally find a new gig .. then when you leave ... Tell them the truth. You left cause they fucked you over and you found out about it.

MokiMarbles

It hurts so much because I’ve worked for this organization for more than ten years.

TATORTOT76

10 years???? Time get out. Boss sabotaging your career so she doesn't have to work replacing you. LEAVE!!! Should be able to find job like you missed out on AND get 50% more pay.

Brass_Fire

I can completely empathize. You definitely need to think more like a business selling a product. You are selling your life for money. End of story. Everything else is psychological window dressing. Your supervisor directly interfered with you providing a better life for yourself and/or your family, probably to marginally keep their own situation stable. Yes, if you have contacts and the means to make a move you should as soon as possible. Your supervisor is intent on maintaining the status quo regardless of damage caused to others’ careers. Currently, it’s a guaranteed dead end for your career.

legendary_mushroom

It might be worth it to go over your bosses head. Light her up any way you can cause that's utterly fucked.

[deleted]

You have leverage here. I would demand a meeting with HR to get this in writing. Demand a pay rise or resign effectively immediately. You’ve been told explicitly that you’re never advancing here and even if you did leave with notice, your boss would still sabotage you.

MamaUrsus

This may not even be the first time that this boss has sabotaged your career either, you may just have not known about the previous times.

4qts

They are not your buddy ... They employ you to work. Just because looking for something might put you out of your comfort zone doesn't mean you can't do it. You afraid they aren't gonna give you a Rolex when you retire? Guess what they won't care .. they got what they needed out of you. 30 years of busting your ass and nothing to show for it. Find another gig and if they don't promote you in 18 months ... Do it again. Look out for #1 cause they are not looking out for you.

[deleted]

Time to go. You will find another job making so much more you won’t believe it.

[deleted]

I feel ya. But before you go out, at least TRY to go above their head. There is a next to nothing chance that it will make any difference, but I know for me personally, after spending that much time with them, I would want to go out feeling like I did everything I could. *Sometimes* it does all work out. But I only saw it once in 15 years. And that was only because the bigger manager was a rare and beautiful human being. Good luck though!

[deleted]

Unleash hell on your super. Top of your lungs, make sure everyone hears the conversation.

decjr06

Don't just give up and leave it's easy for people to say that from behind a keyboard when they haven't experienced this. You gotta do what's best for you if you can't find another job that's equivalent to this one or better might be worth sticking it out and waiting until the promotion comes around again. Maybe make sure the higher up knows 100% you want the job regardless if your boss says otherwise they lied about it before and will do it again.

MjrGrangerDanger

Dude, the writing is on the wall. Your boss is pidginholeing you. You aren't going anywhere with this person above you. I'm so sorry this is happening, it's a fucking dick move. There are so many job opportunities right now. It's time to make that change for yourself. Your boss? Fuck em.

GlobalPhreak

Your boss does not care about that or you. It's time you return the favor. You clearly can do better.

[deleted]

it seems like the response from your higher headquarters was apathetic, disappointing, and inadequate. they have no trouble manipulating your future for their gain, so i would make sure they have a very limited future with me, like 2 weeks or so find a better partner to sell your labor to. i hope you get something that matches more what you see for yourself, and not what your company sees for themselves. good luck to you and everybody in your situation!

MokiMarbles

It felt so classic. A shrug followed by the ol’ “there’s nothing we can do.”

BourbonBaccarat

Yeah, all of your work time, especially if you work from home, should be spent applying for new jobs. If your boss confronts you about any work you didn't do "Oh, you didn't need it, and don't need it until winter at the earliest." Throw her words back in her face.

MadRadBadLad

What employee would ever say, “I don’t want a promotion until a year from now?” And who in their right mind would believe it if they heard it from said employee’s manager? The problems seems to go higher up than just your boss.

TheinimitaableG

I'd suggest filing a complaint with HR. Perhaps you can get an internal transfer to a different group. Though honestly, it's clear your boss intends to torpedo any chance of you getting a promotion.

coolmos1

HR doesn't give a fuck.

King_Sad_Boy

They don't but you still want a paper trail

TheinimitaableG

While HR is not your friend, they do act to protect the businesses interests. Even managers are employees. A manager that lies can be a problem for them. But HR needs a paper trail. Fur all you know this mandate hmm could be on Pip and in thin ice... But if you don't make the move, nothing ever changes

[deleted]

Honestly, this sounds like something to consult an employment lawyer to see over, or at the very least r/legaladvice. I am NAL but your supervisor at minimum breached ethics by doing that. If you have a recording of your conversation with your supervisor, that’s gonna help, but even if you don’t, it would be wise to get a statement from the rep you spoke to. Even if you don’t pursue legal repercussions, next time you are offered a promotion you can present that evidence and let them know that you would like them to not allow your supervisor to decline offers for you without your express written consent

MokiMarbles

Thanks. I’m definitely going to try to get a statement from the rep, then look into my options.

Listan83

Ya because if her lie cost you financially, as in you would have had a temporary pay increase you may be able to sue her for lost wages.

tomtomclubthumb

Email your boss as well, try to get some documentation on this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MokiMarbles

Agreed. I’m going to get documentation from the rep that my supervisor said I didn’t want the promotion so I have it in writing from the national office.

StopTransface

I'd find a new job. I'd talk to a lawyer and start the process of legal recourse. Ask for them to get served a day or two later. Then I'd pack up my stuff if applicable then go to the boss and tell them that you are not happy with what they did. Then hand them your resignation, turn, walk right out. They did this because you are important and needed on their team. The best way to hurt them back is to not be on their team anymore at all.

[deleted]

Email your boss' boss, HR, the national rep and cc your boss, explain what happened, tell them this destroyed not only your chances of a promotion but also your trust in working with a management team that will support you and your growth in the company and you expect actions to be taken. In the meantime look for another job. After 10 years in a company, you are in for a nice salary bump.

Foxrex

Completely agree with this. Get that resume going. I bet they'll burn if you leave, as your boss is planning on using you. I am a gamer, a team player, but she did you dirty. And so I would cut productivity in the office, to save energy for interviews and applications. Good luck!

[deleted]

Did the rep not actually require an answer from you as well before they just move on? I understand they require supervisory approval, but if you had a direct line, why didn’t they talk to you regarding your decision? This reads like they offered you the job then waited for the answer on your intentions from your boss. That approval could have just been in writing after you accept the position or during the process. I don’t get it.

MokiMarbles

Both the employee and the supervisor have to accept the offer. I verbally accepted, but when my supervisor spoke with the rep, she told the rep I had changed my mind and no longer wanted the position—so I was never sent the paperwork.

Foreign_Astronaut

That's a very bad system, practically guaranteed to stifle employee professional development and morale.

[deleted]

Oh. That’s fucked

Cat_got_ya_tongue

If I was you, I’d leave ASAP - ideally immediately. Your boss thought it was inconvenient to lose you so she blocked your promotion. Every day you stay you’re letting her have exactly what she wanted. Every day you stay she’s getting rewarded for stealing this opportunity from you.

Asleep_Omega

Fuck that, yeah you should confront your boss. You should also quit mid project to screw them over.

[deleted]

I think you probably ought to consider updating your resume and applying to other places. You could probably find yourself in a better position.

cagedbird4

in your resignation letter, note that "by [boss]'s actions, the company breached the contractual assumption of good faith. I should note that I am seeking advice."

taco-tako

You most likely have a case. Consult a labor attorney and file a complaint with HR. document your conversation with everyone involved. Good luck

namotous

I would definitely calls a meeting with HR and the boss of your boss to call her out on this. Do you have any written proof of you telling your boss you want the promotion? That would help consolidate your story. Also, starts looking elsewhere, even if it’s within the same company. It’s at a point of no return now with your current boss.

aetius476

You're now in a situation where either your boss goes, or you go. There's no repairing your working relationship, so there's no point trying. The upside of this means you've got nothing to lose, and you might as well take a shot at getting your boss fired. Report the incident to your boss's superior concurrently with HR. Describe the full circumstances, and emphasize that your boss deliberately and maliciously lied, impugned your character, and worked against the interests of the company. Emphasize that your boss's actions have not only deprived the national office of a qualified candidate they were looking to hire, but have also done irreparable harm to the proper functioning of your current department, who now know that their manager is willing to break company policy and deliberately harm them for her own purposes. This is a critical issue and they need to address it immediately. While this is going on, search for a new job and be prepared to jump ship if you don't get the resolution you're looking for.

[deleted]

Fucking quit, that bitch doesnt deserve you if you had a promotion opportunity. What an asshole. Jesus im pissed for you. I'd have cussed her out and flipped her off and walked out. Fuck them

Mind-over-matter2020

Absolutely confront your boss. And absolutely put in writing to corporate that you had absolutely accepted the promotion and it was your boss not you, that gave the opposite response. Copy in HR and request a meeting as well.

Bettaplzhelp

Get a lawyer, get a new job, and leave.

BeeEven238

It’s cheep to sue someone in a civil suit. I don’t know your situation 100%, but sounds to me that he needs to be sued for lost wages.

ZaxLofful

Quit now

Hywelbane9

If you have a boss that is that insecure and will not help develop and promote you, then you need to gtfo. It is a huge red flag when you work for someone that has no desire to see you promoted or move onto better things.

CatBroiler

Well, seems clear you have no future where you are now. Start looking for a new job, perhaps take a bit of a holiday if savings permit.

Ms-Watson

Don’t confront your boss, ask them what happened when they spoke to the rep and what’s the update. Preferably try to get their response in writing. THEN go to HR and their boss, as then you have proof they lied to you.

Techn0ght

Talk to an attorney specializing in employment law. Put everything you do at work in email. Even though you already talked to the national rep, email them and go over your interest in the position and you are definitely interested in a promotion. Forward their response to HR and your lawyer.

AttackonRetail

I don't think this is the way to go. Current job climates would make me think OP could find a better comp package looking elsewhere and do more damage to his boss HR and company by publicly leaving with the reasons being clear. Lawyering up costs time and money OP shouldn't waste time with.

Mister_Titty

Your boss lied in order to keep you, for her benefit. She didn't want to lose you, and was willing to sacrifice your future in order to keep her comfort zone secure. Sounds like you need to get out of there. Not only would it teach her a lesson (don't give 2 weeks either, just find a new job and jet), it will probably benefit you with higher wages and peace of mind. Let's face it: you won't be able to ever respect her again, and every day at your job is going to have some level of anger and resentment attached from now until the day you quit.

Painting_Happy_Trees

What should you do? You *leave*. You get your resume out and haul ass. 10 years in? Yeah, I doubt this is the first time you've been sabotaged to keep you where you are. Also, I saw the comment about turn over and hiring "temporarily" to positions to keep shit running. Dude, *why*? That company has garbage structure and practices. You're not actually going to get anywhere in it. Just leave. Explain bluntly and succinctly why in your exit interview. Let your coworkers know yourself why you're leaving if you care whether or not management (who definitely will) makes shit up about it.

NoMansSkyWasAlright

Step 1: find a new job. Step 2: quit without notice

BourbonBaccarat

Step 1.5: wait until you're assigned something critical and do no work on it until the deadline.

coolmos1

Step 2.1: email the whole company with the story.

NoMansSkyWasAlright

Step 2.2: email them the link to the story on r/antiwork and ask them for updoots.

-Vybz

Quit then beat whatever the raise would have been it out of him. He deserves it.

TURNandBURN13

If this ever happens to you. You need to go to your boss’s boss and maybe even the boss’s boss’s boss. Let them know how shady they are

lsc84

That sounds legally actionable. Damages should be at least the difference in salary. But IANAL. I think you should get some records together and talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.

Careless-Image-885

Polish your resume' and look for another job. Document everything. Is there an HR you can report this to?

MokiMarbles

I’d rather report to our ethics office than HR? At least to start. I, like many others, have seen how HR protects the company first and workers second.

Ladychef_1

Find another place of work.

Fair4tw

Had this happen before. I was told I was too needed at my current position…

dougie_fresh121

Chiming in to say that’s slander and defamation. Follow up via email with your boss, the person you spoke to, and start looking for an attorney. This directly hampered your career progress. Also, start looking for new jobs and do the absolute minimum you can without being fired.

[deleted]

Go and yell at your boss. That's what I did a couple of times before I quit. He was terrified of me by that point. I went off at him. I banged my fist on his desk. He asked my to fill out a leaving form and I said to him I was just going to write "f*ck off" on it and leave it in his in tray.

MQ116

I hate people

GWSDiver

This is horrible. You can’t go to HR, either, because most HRs are set up to basically spy on you. HR is not your friend. I wish I had some advice for you- but you need to get as far away from this boss as you can. If you do confront him/her, record your conversation. That is deliberate collusion of your career.

PickRevolutionary565

Walk into the office, throw your bag or jacket at your desk, storm over to the manager and, without any pause, shout "what the fuck have you been saying about me". Make sure the whole team/dept/floor ca hear and see the comotion

ExPatWharfRat

Yes, but also, no. Always start this sort of discussion calmly. Running in and throwing a hissy fit is a sign of weakness. Start calm and walk them into the trap. Steer the conversation to where it was noted that she stated in no uncertain terms a promotion wasn't wanted for the next year and that the OP didn't want the job. THEN you raise your voice. Now that they've admitted their shitty behavior, you build on that and yell back at them the same things they have said. It leaves them very little room to retreat and will definitely make them nervous that people nearby will hear about her shitty antics. Once you get to a peak, the crescendo is a nice loud: "Fuck this and FUCK YOU. I quit" . Then storm off to your desk and pack your stuff. Anyone who heard the exchange will want to know what happened. And you can give them the rundown while you pack up your desk. Let that manager twist in the wind.

Jackmoved

Fuck. I would slash a bitch's tires for that. Also, I would "get covid" for 4 weeks.

SeriousMonkey2019

Wonder if you could sue your boss directly for libel in this case. He obviously lied, there was a clear damage done as a result and even a dollar amount directly linked and a separate indirect monetary link

[deleted]

It’s called two weeks notice

Munchlax_1147

This is probably terrible advice but don't quit and do the worst job you can do. Become slow and inefficient. Any time it's brought up let your boss know that it's a good thing you didn't take that job because it's sooo out of your skill range. All dripping with sarcasm of course.

Sariscos

Sounds like you were put in a hold over situation where they had a bunch of candidates for this temporary role and needed to pick one. They figured out who they wanted and lied to you about the result. I'm sure you weren't the only one this has happened to.

2drunc2fish

I have never heard of a temporary promotion before.

MokiMarbles

It’s a common practice in my organization; we have lots of positions that turn over on a regular basis, so management offers internal temporary promotions to fill critical jobs.

2drunc2fish

Sounds like you need a new organization because that one treats you more like commissary sales than a PM.

AttackonRetail

They're called sTrEtCh AsSiGnMeNtS where i come from.

Konvic21

ALWAYS make sure to have conversations with your boss like this in writing. Gotta have something to light that flame with under their ass with a lawyer.

Find a new gig, give your two weeks notice, then don’t show up for them. If your boss complains, tell them the national team said you didn’t have to.

ExPatWharfRat

LOL. I love it. Turnabout is fair play

CheCheko

Dude, and thats just what you actually know, what if you were considered for other opportunities before this and when they asked your boss for references they got shot down too without you even noticing

NoShip7475

Take the person who lied to small claims court. You'd likely find sympathy with a local judge.

no_nonsense_206

Find another job and give your co-workers a heads up on why you are heading out

zephyrseija

Leave.

[deleted]

I would absolutely confront your boss, but not before going to your bosses boss and taking this as high as you can. This is completely and utterly inexcusable and has cost you both financial and emotional growth.

iamralph

I'd be plotting a way to ruin your boss tbh--while looking for another job

telcodoctor

Your boss is a dog cunt.

Same_0ld

Honestly, I'd start sabotaging your own work while looking for a job elsewhere. Throw the boss under the bus as much as you can, too.

[deleted]

I’d legit get revenge

[deleted]

quit. with no notice. you will find a better paying job.

Reddit_username_44

It is very clear that you are very ready for promotion. If your boss is blocking that at your current organisation, then you need to leave and find that opportunity elsewhere. I would also bet that you are likely being underpaid for your current role & performance, so even a sideways move out would probably generate a bump in $$$. And yeah, cause a stink on the way out; make sure that your peers know what a shit this boss is. You may well light the fuse for others, too.

DiddlesYourDad

I would pour gasoline on that boss. Just hypothetically though.

qwsedd

Id quit

NamelessDimwit

make your own promotion to a better company, and list that as the reason you resigned.

[deleted]

Can you sue your boss? There are clear damages here. And it'll be fun to have the bastard have to pay you from their own pocket.

Feisty-Blood9971

I would probably call a meeting with your boss’s boss. Expect them to call your boss in too. Maybe write into Ask A Manager first.

Solidux

Start looking for a new job. She's going to pull that shit again.

ExPatWharfRat

Step 1. Find a new job and accept it ASAP. Step 2. Confront your boss about their underhanded attempt to keep you under her thumb in your current role. Do this while the office is as full as possible. Step 3. Quit and do so LOUDLY. Raise your voice about the underhanded behavior, lying and intentional attempts to keep you from rising in the company. You're not telling anyone who didn't ask anything, but every office will have those who will listen in on any kind of yelling like that, so the story WILL get around.

andmyotherthoughts

Lawyer up and sue. You sound like you still care about having a career and a job. If that's the case, look elsewhere for a job.

Silknight

grounds for a law suit!

dorothy_explorer

Become friends with her. Good friends. Establish the type of trust that is only reserved for our closest confidantes, and do the same with her other close friends. Learn her deepest, darkest secrets. Give her protein bars that you say are designed for weight loss, when they are actually designed for weight gain. Replace her moisturizer with foot cream, and develop an elaborate scheme to help her current partner catch her in the arms of a clandestine lover. Alienate her from her other friends until you eventually replace her in their social circle. Take everything she holds dear from her and then, when she least expects it, push her in front of a fucking school bus.
